What the hell is Hector?

Recommended Posts

Aaaargh! PodGamer reviewed this when it was just a point-and-clicky on the iThing, but of course PodGamer isn't available right now (Sob.).

Telltale need to fire their PR department. They've been sizzling Jurassic Park since before they'd even determined the game mechanics, and this game gets no play until after it's been released? Madness!

By which I mean to say; this looks amusing and I believe I will be purchasing it.

They're only publishing the PC port of Hector, to be fair. They're not developing it themselves.

Although, I suppose they might've at least helped with the port? I don't know. U:

Either way, I'll be getting it. It does look amusing. I've heard it's only two hours, though? For ten bucks, even I start to question things at two-hour lengths. Especially with adventure games - they're hardly the kind of game I play again and again, unless I really, really like them. (I'm also kind of stupid at adventure games, though, despite having played them for... ever. So maybe I'll get more than two hours.)

I am in trouble (I was forced to run through a sprinkler for penance) because I forgot that the review of Hector for iThing was on Or Something before it was on (the currently-unavailable) PodGamer:

A pity that the ad gave away some of the puzzle objects and solutions - I suppose with a puzzle game it's sort of impossible not to if you're including game footage.

Am I strange that I was absolutely not interested in this game until I heard Hector's voice? The fact that he's not a dumb American pig cop as was expected is odd to me.

That said, I'm not so into this graphic style, but yeah.

Played it. It's good I guess. At least has a quite dissimilar theme from any adventure games I know and not afraid to make really lewd jokes.

Not surprising considering the game was made by some Irish guys.

So I played all of the 3 episodes now. I don't remember how long the first one was, but second and third games took me about 4-5 hours each. Not bad for 10€ (current price on Steam). I think they were even too long. Especially the last part of the game was kind of longish. There's this sequence of screens that I thought was never going to stop.

The puzzles were occasionally very simplistic, some were cleverer, but never got too difficult. I was never stuck more than 5 minutes.

Overall I kind of liked it, but I'm not hoping for any more episodes, because the kind of humour in this game just isn't suitable for a longer series.
