toblix Posted September 19, 2010 After hearing about Ico and SotC supporting 3D, I'm really considering getting a 3D TV. I've been trying to find a list of games that (will) support 3D, but I can't. The only info I have so far is that Ico and SotC will support it, the next game in some Sony FPS will, and also there's a demo of MotorStorm that has some single player stuff in 3D. Am I just bad at finding out this stuff, or haven't Sony fully revved up the 3D machinery yet? Why doesn't Sony have a dedicated web site listing all their 3D games? Tanukitsune Posted September 19, 2010 Whoa! Aren't 3D TVs half a million Euros ATLEAST!?
Nappi Posted September 19, 2010 I think some of the older games, such as Wipeout HD and Super Stardust HD, were supposed to get 3D support patched in as well. Haven't seen a complete list of games that support 3D, though, which is indeed stupid and strange. The whole 3D thing is really confusing at the moment, not just games-wise. For instance, does anyone know if there is or will be a way to turn your regular 100 or 200 Hz HDTV into a 3D TV (without red-blue glasses that is)? Will PS3s 3D only work on new Sony 3D TVs? Etc. As for 3d-ifying non-3D televisions, I think there are a couple of reasons that won't happen: You'll probably want a higher framerate (400Hz?) and very little ghosting between frames to separate the different "eyes" You'll need to synchronize the glasses with the TV There's more money in getting everyone to replace their brand new HDTVs I think everyone has miraculously agreed to use the Blu-ray 3D standard, which means all TVs should be able to play 3D Blu-rays and PS3 games, and I don't know of any other 3D sources. edit: It really seems like Sony is too busy pushing Move™ to even mention 3D on their site, which makes me think I should maybe wait a generation. Tanukitsune Posted September 19, 2010 You should wait until they don't cost a babillion dollars at least!
Raff Posted September 19, 2010 I have strabismus and can only use one eye at a time. Down with 3D!
toblix Posted September 19, 2010 You should wait until they don't cost a babillion dollars at least! Take it easy, man, they're not that expensive. I have strabismus and can only use one eye at a time. I'm sure they'll release a 3D monocle.
Patters Posted September 19, 2010 I have strabismus and can only use one eye at a time.Down with 3D! Yep I take this stance (if I had the condition). 3D shouldn't use glasses, I'm slightly curious how glasses-less 3D would work with those with that and similar conditions, particularly in TVs. Erkki Posted September 19, 2010 I haven't looked into 3D much, but based on what little I've heard I'd say wait a generation. As I understand, there may be 3D TV's that don't require glasses.

It doesn't work, that's the thing. All fake 3D can go to hell! http://www.strabismus.nl/3d (I'm of course joking, have fun with your 3D as long as I can turn it off like with the 3DS)
Tanukitsune Posted September 19, 2010 Take it easy, man, they're not that expensive. They are about 3.000 Euro and you say that's not expensive? Clearly you must be loaded! Or maybe I'm just the poorest guy here? Am I the only one here with a blue collar job?
syntheticgerbil Posted September 19, 2010 Yeah, all these new 3D releases are tempting from an OCD standpoint, but either way I couldn't afford the TV. Even if I had $3,000 USD or whatever they cost to burn, there's no way I'd spend that kind of money on it. What's really obnoxious is the expensive glasses you have to wear (and buy) as well. I'm kind of hoping this is a fad for the sake of the dorky glasses required. No way would I buy a 3D TV unless they become comparable to what a regular large LCD TV costs. Even then, I still think LCD TVs cost way too much even though they have gone way down in price the last few years, allowing me to buy one without feeling too much of a strain last year. But yeah, I'm sure it would look nice to play good games in 3D. I'm hoping there's not trophies attached to owning a 3D TV or something. That would be fucking awful. I'm also looking way forward to the 3DS which doesn't require glasses.
Tanukitsune Posted September 19, 2010 I'm pretty sure having a 3DTV means you no longer need the glasses? Because I think you can get the "normal" 3D effect from a normal screen and 3D glasses?
Nappi Posted September 19, 2010 No, they still require shutter glasses. Majority of them, at least.
Patters Posted September 19, 2010 No, they still require shutter glasses. Majority of them, at least. And the other ones do cost half a million.
Tanukitsune Posted September 19, 2010 Wait a minute, there are TWO kinds of 3DTVs? What do you call the ones that need glasses? Because it would be kinda devious if they both had the exact same name.
Cigol Posted September 19, 2010 I have no intention or means of buying a 3DTV in the near future, but I also had no intention or means of buying a HDTV, PS3, flat panel LCD/TV (etc) when they were originally announced... at a stretch I guess I'll eventually own a 3DTV, hopefully without the glasses but if not so what? After hearing about Ico and SotC supporting 3D, I'm really considering getting a 3D TV. I found it interesting Ueda says the original ICO and Shadow of the Colossus were made with 3D in mind () but that the Last Guardian he is still unsure about. That's just... odd. But apart from the games already mentioned GT5 will have 3D and is apparently a really good showcase for 3D use in games. As I understand, there may be 3D TV's that don't require glasses. There already are, but I doubt they'll work with the PS3. They might work differently for people sitting off-centre as well - or at least I've read that, don't know if it's true. I'm kind of hoping this is a fad for the sake of the dorky glasses required. *They do look like those glasses you see old ladies wear.
Nappi Posted September 19, 2010 So, are the ones that don't require glasses even commercially available yet?
Tanukitsune Posted September 19, 2010 I think so because I saw a few sites selling 3DTVs for 3000-6000€ and for that price they better not need glasses!
Nappi Posted September 19, 2010 The shutter-glass models may well cost over 3000 euros. The ones that don't need them seem even more dubious to me actually. Does anyone know what are the suitable viewing angles for those things, for instance?
Tanukitsune Posted September 19, 2010 OH DEAR GOD! If that is true, the mere thought of the possible price of a 3DTV that doesn't need glasses is just.... "If you have to ask how much it costs, you can't afford it.":getmecoat
Patters Posted September 19, 2010 I think so because I saw a few sites selling 3DTVs for 3000-6000€ and for that price they better not need glasses! Nope, they will. Glasses-less 3D TVs are prototypes, there is talk of 2013 release for consumers and earlier for professionals.
Cigol Posted September 19, 2010 You can see a little video of one of them working; http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/03/philips-dimenco-3d-tv-of-the-glasses-free-future-hopefully-our/ ...it actually looks kind of cool.
miffy495 Posted September 19, 2010 Holy crap, people are making a huge deal over cost here. Look, I don't care about 3D really, but for curiosity's sake I glanced through a flyer last weekend and there was a store in my city selling some 50"-ish 3DTVs for about $1500CDN, 4 pairs of glasses included. That's not great, but also not ridiculous. Can we stop assuming these things cost more than anyone could possibly ever afford now?
toblix Posted September 19, 2010 I think I'll wait just because it seems that there's more to adding 3D to a game than just flipping a switch. Since you'll have to be able to render at twice the frame rate, there'll be compromises in quality. How this plays out depends on how hard Sony (and maybe Microsoft at some point) will push and support developers. Currently they seem happy with having announced a couple of titles, which may mean most games won't really support it, which makes owning the 3D part of a 3D TV a waste.
