Murdoc Posted June 22, 2010 I could potentially start on Thursday(supposed to be raining) and since Ive been getting a lot of experience lately I am pretty sure I can manage a season or two(or are we doing a year or two?) without killing anyone. PROPOSITION I also I had a hilariously terrible idea. What if the expedition team of dwarves consisted of us? We'll each decide what profession to be (with out much dialog of what we would actually need) and then custom make the dwarves to be that profession with the persons name? That way we could have hilarious results of having too many of X and be able to see how our in game dwarves manage to survive! I doubt anyone is going to choose to be a pump operator or something obscure for an expedition (Also FYI: pretty sure Fishing is bugged, so don't pick fishing) so we should be alright. Anyway, just an idea...
dibs Posted June 22, 2010 Haha. awesome. I could start it either, but i tend to not get into ridiculous scenarios like you. And thats what we are really looking for isn't it?
Murdoc Posted June 22, 2010 Well I think I know what I am doing enough not to get into anything crazy, however I have some pretty interesting luck, so who knows. I don't mind who goes first, though considering I'm off on the 29ths, I figured if I could go first then I probably wont miss any turns by the time I come up again. Also, btw, who is still in? dibs Posted June 22, 2010 I have no idea who is still in, but start one and i'll take over for sure. Today i was horribly late making dinner because i decided to make a moat. That meant i had to flood it and since i don't know how to use floodgates, that meant my miners had to carve intricate doored tunnels to release the water, and then workers had to remove the doors. I was late because i was watching my miners run screaming from the floods and my workers try to walk in vain upstream to release some door or other. muhahah. Also, i started work on a tower that will sit atop my outcrop.
Sombre Posted June 22, 2010 I am, in theory, but my real PC is broke at the moment, so it's gonna take a while for me to get parts together, so i'd be late on!
F4T C4T Posted June 24, 2010 I'm still in. My internet has been down again all week (grrr) but I'm still around. I'd say just go for it Murdoc, start one up, play a year then let us know when your done. We can sort the order out in the mean-time. There was a list further up so we could go on from that. I like the idea of having us as the starting Dwarves. If you do it I'd be a woodcutter/military dwarf. Military for the down time once I've deforested everywhere. Chop! Chop! Let us know how it goes! Murdoc Posted June 24, 2010 Does anyone have any suggestions how we can document the progress for the outside world?(blog?) Should we come up with a standardize method of relaying information( I think its neat to list notable dwarfs in case something awesome happens to them later on) Any suggestions for starting region?(lush, desert, terrifying, dangerous, etc) Also, if you want to be part of the original expedition(probably too many people to fit in the original) just list your Dwarf Name and Profession and secondary skill. First come first serve; all subsequent dwarves will arrive as migrants when you take on the task of administration(meaning you will have to choose a migrant or a dwarf to be you, if you so want to participate like that, I don't think its a requirement) I like to randomize expedition and fortress names, however if anyone has suggestions let me know. Like if you really want the word Wizard to show up or something, hehe. One last thing; I tend to do extremes, but for this since I'm starting, I will be the most even handed in the set up, just not create anything too gonzo, I can't guarantee that for my second term
dibs Posted June 24, 2010 Would it be ok to use a thread here just to chronicle this? Else we can set up a free Live Journal or something. My dwarf: Dibsric Snorestorer +2 Brewing, +2 Cooking, +1 in Maces (Via rolling pin), +1 Flatterer, +1 Pacifier, +1 Teacher. In order in case i went over budget! I like the ranomised names for places. As for starting point, just make sure there are at least a few trees and not too much evil (i for one haven't figured out the military in the new one:P). And no aquafer ofc. Murdoc Posted June 24, 2010 Well it would be cool if we could have a place that wont get too cluttered for posting and then just keep a discussion thread going(this one I assume) Might just hold off on this since I think a lot of the people that wanted to join in are a bit mia at the moment, and it'd be cool to start with all the expedition dwarves representations of real people. But we'll see.
Murdoc Posted June 25, 2010 (edited) EXPEDITION TEAM 1. Dibsric Snorestorer -Brewer/Macedwarf (expedition leader... you started this) 2. F4TC4t - Carpenter/Axedwarf 3. Murdoc Stouthate - Farmer/ Mechanic(need traps more, lol) Skill/Profession Reference http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/DF2010:Skill I originally thought we got ten points, but we get a max of ten points, but should stick with around 8 to help spread the skills around between people. Just let me know your name and if you choose to have a custom profession name. All of this can be adjusted later, so it's no big deal. In fact the expedition requires women, so we could always just go with what we have now and add more later with migrants show up. We'll need a couple miners, so if we have the space we can just have the empty spots peasants with such tasks. I think we should stick with Idlethumb names so not to get confusing, but feel free to create a variation. Ex: Gimili FatCat I used this for a last name generator: http://cbpye.net/dwarfname.php And even if you don't play and want a dwarf and there is room, I'm happy to add ya(though you can't chose your profession as a migrant, if you have a preference we can always wait for an available spot. I think it would be hilarious to have an entire fortress with custom names of everyone here(granted its some work for something semi useless, so no promises, lol) Edited June 25, 2010 by Murdoc
F4T C4T Posted June 25, 2010 Yeah, my forum name stands out a bit in that line up! Using the name generator as inspiration, how about... Fatcat MacMeadjaw. The name generator also provided me with Helmdoor Doorgold, which reminded me of the whole Jeff Goldblum thing.
Murdoc Posted July 9, 2010 Alrighty... sort of back. Not so much online a lot, but I can do one or two years of Dwarf Fortress and then a post or so. Just wondering who else wanted to actually participate so I can add them to the original expedition team?
F4T C4T Posted July 9, 2010 I just popped onto the forums to say I was going to get this thing started over the weekend but I'll let you go ahead now you're back Murdoc. Stick Fatcat MacMeadjaw in the original expedition team. I look forward to my reign of terror (or more likely, clumsiness).
Murdoc Posted July 11, 2010 Alright, I've completed the first year and went a bit into the spring of the second, sorry about that, I just get caught up with it. Things are going good, but theres a lot of half finished stuff, which I'll report in my post(I think I'll make a new thread for it with a table of contents that the first post can be edited so people can easily get to just the reports) One thing, the save folder is 28 megs, but looks like there is a raw file with a bunch of graphics and stuff... I can probably leave that out and rar the wholet hing to send to people; right?
Murdoc Posted July 13, 2010 Sorry this is taking so long guys, first try seems to have some hiccups...also Im not near a computer often and when I am, it's pretty crap. Anyway, Dibs, Fatcat, can you guys PM me a email address you use so I can send you guys link? I'm going to share the fort on box.net I can give you guys editor priviliages if you want, so you can just dump stuff there(though Im on a free account with 1 gb)
dibs Posted July 13, 2010 Sent my address. I hope we don't fill up a 1G account with our flailing empire^^
Murdoc Posted July 13, 2010 I think we can always just delete older files as thereis not much point in keeping them, or just start additional accounts, hehe. The save files are like 25mbs, so we can at least keep a fair number on there. Also I made the new post for the accounts of the first year for our first succession fort! F4T C4T Posted July 14, 2010 Nice job Murdoc, looks like a solid start and an area with potential. I worry that my fortress management skills will be up to scratch come my turn though!
dibs Posted July 14, 2010 Shall i take over the current save then?
dibs Posted July 14, 2010 There seems to be an issue. I think i also need your "region1" folder. Is B the one you stripped down? I downloaded A (the big one) and it doesn't give me the option to start from a save. Also, do I read or not read your report?^^
Murdoc Posted July 14, 2010 Sorry I had to split the files into two parts because of Box.net; they should unrar into the same folder making a complete region-1-spring 1052 folder. Just tried it in a seperate clean folder and it worked, so should be good to go. Also, what's the normal etiquette for succession forts; do they read the reports? I assumed so, as things could get overly complicated down the road. There wasn't much to say and its a bit dry for the first year, but at least would provide some background on what was going on, hehe.
dibs Posted July 14, 2010 Sorry, i should have realised that! >< I'm not going to read it, lets see where your plans take me:P
F4T C4T Posted July 14, 2010 Too late for me, already read through the report. I think it makes sense to know what the previous ruler has done and set in motion though.
