Forbin Posted July 17, 2010 WHAT'S WITH ALL THE TIM AND DAVE HATE??!?!?!!!1111Seriously I was going to let you two slide, but you posted in the MI2 thread and this again. All I'm saying is you two are bitching pretty hard core on Ron Gilbert, and to pretend like you're not hating on him when you go back and read all your posts is ridiculous. You have a strange love hate relationship with these Monkey Island games.

Forbin Posted July 17, 2010 (edited) I did cite examples, the dude opened up saying Ron Gilbert hasn't made anything worth while in 20 years. Don't see why I'm getting ganged up on for saying that's bullshit. And I did let it drop, but they keep posting. Maybe it seems like neither of us is letting go of this stupid debate because of a time difference, and the lag has us in some perpetual struggle. But after I specifically said I was done he posted in 2 seperate threads and gerbil responded as well. It's stupid, we're not even debating whether or not Ron has done anything worthwhile recently which is subjective (though Thunder claims it's factual), we're debating whether anybody has said anything negative. And since nobody has gone back and edited their posts, I don't see why that's even a question. You can go back and read it all if you want, but I wouldn't it's boring as hell. I apologize to anyone that's being distracted by this thread hijack, but I'm going to respond when everyone keeps jumping in. I guess I'm all alone on Team Gilbert. Don't see why I'm getting ganged up on for saying that's bullshit. And I did let it drop, but they keep posting.I guess I'm all alone on Team Gilbert. and quote: Sad to say, but I'm gonna wait for the reviews on this one. Ron Gilbert hasn't created a game I've cared about in nearly 20 years, and the last time he did, he had help from Tim Schafer... (and Dave Grossman). cared=/=worthwhile Thunderpeel hasn't been interested by any games he has been involved with, that's fine. You do, which is also fine. It has spiralled into an argument which has gone back and forth making no progress, which isn't fine. Infact a second quote helps here: I don't say any of this with any malice or hate for the man, though. I hope Death Spank is excellent, and I'm keen on playing it. But whereas I once would have bought anything with Gilbert's name on it, time has changed things, and I've realised that Grossman and Schafer are both extremely talented guys, too. I think you have entirely missed the definition of the word, hate: To have a great aversion to, with a strong desire that evil should befall the person toward whom the feeling is directed; to dislike intensely; to detest; as, to hate one's enemies; to hate hypocrisy. Maybe the way Thunderpeel is writing seems to give a different impression (for you) to what he means, with a different style of writing over here (UK) and over there (USA). All I know is that you are coming off as a self righteous dick (I doubt that is what you are) for continuing, and Johnny has not been serious for all of his posts. I see what the problem is: see, regardless of what it means in the US or UK, on the internets, hate with respect to something the person speaking likes or feels positively about means anything less than positive regard/opinion. Which includes, for instance, indifference. only half serious
thorn Posted July 18, 2010 I think he knows. Every post on his blog is followed by "I want Death Spank on the PC or I'm not buying it!!!" type posts. It's been going on like this for months. You make a great point though: If he's just messing people around (and this IS the guy who gave us THAT ending for MI2 -- and he still enjoys not telling everyone about it) then he's shooting himself in the foot, as many people are holding out for it.It's not just that though... most people I know are more than happy to buy the game on PS3, but only if the PC version isn't happening. So if there will be no PC version, he's screwing up what could be impressive early sales numbers.
Chris Posted July 18, 2010 As for the Tim + Dave > Ron debate. Tim spent 10 years making 2 games, neither of which made much money, and only 1 that was critically acclaimed. How does their financial success have anything to do with anything being discussed? I really enjoyed both of those games, and Ron Gilbert developed nothing I was interested in during that time, or for the seven or eight years prior to that for that matter. I think you're taking these statements oddly personally. I think Ron Gilbert is a great guy. He's made some games I love, I've interviewed him many times and always enjoyed it, I think he's really sharp. And I'm sure his kids' games were really well designed. There are probably some kids' cartoon shows on Cartoon Network that are well made, but I'm still not going to use my time to play them. That's not to begrudge anyone else's enjoyment of those things, but it's odd that you would be so adamant about justifying away somebody's lack of interest. I love his work, but to put down Ron for being inactive is kind of silly. The other factor being that he was always senior to them, so it's not surprising that he's been in higher-level roles for a longer time. Anyways I'm tired of splitting hairs, if you guys want to claim you're not hating on Ron so be it. Well, Tim Schafer has been senior to everyone at his company for the last ten years, and he still writes almost all the dialogue for Double Fine, and serves as creative director, so I'm not sure that comparison is particularly meaningful. If "hating on" is the same as "hating" then it's I don't know how you're accusing anybody of doing that. Saying "this guy made some games I loved, then he went off and did other stuff that's less interesting to me" is not tantamount to hatred.
mikemariano Posted July 18, 2010 I am......not going to read any of this thread. I played some of the Deathspank demo tonight. I basically just walked around, mashed buttons, and shrugged my shoulders. This isn't my kind of game. Luckily it's gorgeous. The environments are so much fun to look at. I wish the enemies were more interesting, though—all I saw were skeletons and chickens. I had forgotten how good Ron Gilbert is at being silly, even when his jokes aren't particularly funny. Deathspank's banter with the witch was both sweet and self-aware.

I have been serious for many of my posts, of course, so saying I haven't will only confuse things, but as you quite rightly pointed out: Indifference != hate. Forbin, I did explicitly state that in one of my posts: "They're not games I love or hate. I just don't care about them." So anyways, back to the game itself. Have you actually gotten around to playing it yet, Mr Forbin? The proof, as they say, is in the pudding... Is it any good?

juv3nal Posted July 18, 2010 To the people talking about playing the demo: Was this only on the 360? I can't seem to find the demo on PSN. I'm in Canada, and there's definitely a demo on PSN for me. Under "new releases", there's a deathspank entry which, if you push x on it opens up a sub-menu thingy letting you pick either the demo or the full game. syntheticgerbil Posted July 19, 2010 (edited) I'm now officially jealous of everyone playing so far. I will try to cram in my lost time for not being able to play Deathspank last weekend to trying to finish it in full next weekend. I have this... situation... where I keep my video games away from me on certain times so I can focus on other more important stuff. Last weekend had a bunch of stuff come up, including racing wiener dogs. Seriously I was going to let you two slide, but you posted in the MI2 thread and this again. All I'm saying is you two are bitching pretty hard core on Ron Gilbert, and to pretend like you're not hating on him when you go back and read all your posts is ridiculous. You have a strange love hate relationship with these Monkey Island games. Let us slide? Goodness. I find it strange that you are so touchy towards any kind of general criticism and so hellbent on twisting anything we said into something we never did say to satisfy some kind of extreme urge for a forum argument or conflict. I don't exactly agree with Thunderpeel's skepticism, but I see exactly where he's coming from. I am into just hearing what Thunderpeel has to say from his perspective as someone who did not go out and buy a bunch of kid's games or Cavedog games (where he was only credited as producer or company owner, not game designer/director). It's a worthy discussion I say, and to me is more interesting than just nonstop praise, even though praise is great too. I guess I'm all alone on Team Gilbert. :\ Edited July 19, 2010 by syntheticgerbil

syntheticgerbil Posted July 19, 2010 This I had never heard of until just now. First impressions post google...looks hilarious and fun  Haha, it was really just one dog we were trying to race and usually only one dog made it to the finish line while the rest went around sniffing stuff or wandering off. It was a strange and fun experience.
