Eurogamer expo 28-29 Oct, come play indie games, thumbs meet up?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

since losing my job at NC, I've been working part time with Eurogamer to help organise their expo. http://expo.eurogamer.net

I wouldn't normally advertise but, this doesn't count because:

1. I'm working on this, and so is Nachimir

2. It's £5 to get in and it's all for charity

3. it's a perfect chance for a london Thumbs meet up

4. Nachimir and myself (mainly Nach) have been working to get a little indie arcade area set up there, and we have a winning selection of games:

Braid

Dangerous Highschool Girls In Trouble

Jetpack Brontosaurus

Multiwinia

Plain Sight (important note: this is made by Elijay and mr Alex Ashby )

Machinarium

Samorost

Shift

War Twat

World of Goo

Additionally there are loads of other games, you know, commercialised horseshit like left4dead and far Cry 2.

Anyone fancy it?

Of course I'll be working the entire god damn time (11am - 10pm), but I can probably escape for a drink at some point, maybe...

Oop, the final list:

- Braid (PC)

- Dangerous Highschool Girls In Trouble (PC)

- Off Road Velociraptor Safari (PC)

- Machinarium (PC)

- Multiwinia (PC)

- Plain Sight (PC)

- Psychosomnium (PC)

- Shift (PC)

- War Twat (PC)

- World of Goo (PC)

I'm well chuffed to be doing stuff on this and to have squeezed an adventure game in there :) (Machinarium - I was only hoping for Samorost but they got a build of Machinarium done and it's double-plus:tup:)

I'll be around on both days, though not constantly as we're running other events there.

did I say Veliciraptor? I meant Velociraptor.

Fuck. Two days too early. I get back into London on the 31st :(

(My timing with London events sucks because they had a Q&A in London with Simon and the cast of The Wire two days after I left :( )

Why in the middle of a week? :( I would've loved to come over :getmecoat

Alas, that's when they're having the career fair so the expo is timed to go with it.

There's all kinds of strange and frustrating timing this year, e.g. the LGF was timed to go with the BAFTAs, but then they moved to early next year (Didn't make sense to be handing BAFTA award to games that were yet to be released), and that makes the LGF clash with GameCity in Nottingham (which needs to be at half-term) when it really didn't need to, etc.

Someone point me to a couch I can crash on and I'll come. I'm a totally nice guy and a good guest! Also, I travel with bottles of expensive whisky.

Will there be anything going on the evening the 28th? I could try and blag work so I would be 'urgently required in london' - but as a result I would have to sit in the office until 5 ish.

The expo will be until 10 that night. I think there's a chance Rock Paper Shotgun are also doing some kind of event in a pub that night, but I don't have details for it yet.

That didn't take long to sort out: ping. Book there for Rock Paper Shotgun, it's free.

Google maps puts the pointer in the wrong place, but Beak Street is easily spottable just to the North West.

Hm. I'm tempted, but also a bit worried I'll be stuck there on a limb on my own in a field of gamers.

Pricks! Even booking tickets in advance? I managed to get from Nottingham to London and back for £35 recently (Costs about £150 on the day).

Norfolk, I wouldn't worry too much. The RPS thing will involve drinking games, and crowds at LGF events are generally friendly.

Also, any of you not at the LGF but around the midlands should definitely check out GameCity in Nottingham, specifically the thing they're doing on Halloween. They haven't put this on the website yet for some reason, but it was in their emails recently:

As you might be aware, this year we're making a number of World Record attempts at the festival. The most splendid of which is a Halloween attempt on the LARGEST GATHERING OF ZOMBIES.

That's right folks - from 2pm on Halloween you should get yourself down to the Old Market Square in Nottingham and be made up and registered as an official Zombie in time for the record attempt, which takes place at 5pm.

But that's not enough, right?

Of course not.

At 5pm, you'll also get to take part in a large scale reconstruction of the famed Thriller dance routine (without having to do any time in a Filipino Prison :

Don't worry, we have people there who will show you the moves.

Enough?

No, thought not.

At 5pm, to mark this occasion, JONATHAN COULTON, in town for his headlining Harmonix / Halloween gig that evening will be leading the massed throng of Zombies in a Chorus of his brilliant song, "re:your brains", accompanied by both the crowd - and a massed choir of zombie singers.

As Coulton himself remarked, "I would be crazy to say no to the option of an outdoor zombie singalong led by a city choir. That's the whole reason I became a musician, I now realize. Sign me up."

What do you mean you don't know the words? It's ok, we thought of that. Download the official songsheet here:

http://gamecity.org/wp-content/uploads/2008/10/re-your-brains_songsheet.pdf

(The bits you sing are in red.)

You want to play along too? Ok, ok. Download the guitar tab and chords here:

http://gamecity.org/wp-content/uploads/2008/10/re_brains_tab.pdf

Just make sure you tune up before 5. We'll have somewhere you can get concert pitch from in the make-up tent.

I'm going to miss it because of working on the LGF until Friday night :(:fart:

Oh that is bloody brilliant. A gathering of zombies? That's the sort of thing I'd like to participate in at one point.

(Remembering Spaff and Rusalka's zombie wedding dress-up, which seemed like awsome fun)

Calling all unemployed people... we need a few good men (or ladies) to assist with the running of this expo... it's entirely un-glamorous, but could be fun anyway, plus I could do with a handful of people I know I can trust :)

You'll get to go behind the scenes and errr meet Nachimir and me?

Dan has signed up to help also I believe. :)

We're looking for a few good men (and women; we're not fussy) to help run the Eurogamer Expo this October!

As well as getting into the Expo for FREE and being able to pal around with us for two days, you'll also be one of the privileged few to get the chance to...

- Plug things in!

- Restart consoles!

- Answer questions about games!

- Fetch and carry (sometimes heavy) items!

We know you're excited already - possibly twitching nervously, wondering how you can apply - but wait, let us sweeten the pot some more. We're also going to:

- Pay your expenses (up to £20 per day)

- Keep you caffeinated and hydrated, and best of all

- Cover your naked torso in a unique Eurogamer Expo t-shirt!

Oh, and hopefully, give you a bunch of free gaming related stuff. But we know it's the t-shirt that you really want.

Don't worry, we'll give you the occasional compassionate break, and promise not to yell at you unless you, oooh, drop an expensive TV. We're also flexible on just when you volunteer - see the form linked below for details.

All we ask is that you are...

- Aged 18 or over (when the Expo starts, natch)

- Eager as a beaver in a sawmill

- Friendly as a clown at a kid's party

- Games-savvy as a cynical forum member

Want to sign-up? Boy, do you. All we need you to do is complete THIS ONLINE FORM, and then we'll scrutinise it carefully and let you know if you've been selected.

Odds are, you will be. Told you we're not fussy.

Questions? Fire away.

Ah, I'd love to. I'd love to even take two days off work. Then I'd have the hotel to pay for. Bah.

Again, I would totally volunteer if I only had a couple of square feet, preferably cushioned in some manner, on which to sleep. I totally understand the lack of eager offers, though, it's not like I'd be thrilled to have people I haven't even seen taking up space :P

Oh, man, I just realized I have reading week next week, which means I wouldn't even lose any classes I care about. I really can't justify what a hostel would cost, though :(
