Marek Posted September 5, 2007 Oh man. Has anyone seen it? By which I mean the documentary about obsessive Donkey Kong players? It's hilarious and amazing. Go see it.
Roderick Posted September 6, 2007 It's out already? I liked the trailer, though this might not be a cinema must-see for me.
Nappi Posted September 6, 2007 I'll just go a head and show my ignorance on this topic as well: what makes the arcade Donkey Kong such a hard game?
Marek Posted September 6, 2007 The trailer doesn't do the movie justice at all. Let me put it this way: if you enjoyed The Office, you will love King of Kong. Because it doesn't have just one David Brent, but like ... three David Brents. As well as at least three Schrutes. And also one Tim/Jim, except he's an obsessive-compulsive Donkey Kong player who is determined to break through Billy Mitchells "little empire". Oh man it's so hilarious. Billy Mitchell is like the head David Brent. At one point I think he compared having an opinion about a controversial Donkey Kong score to having an opinion about abortion. Basically, you have to go see it. Yes, it's about video game highscores and a bunch of nerds caught up in their own world, but it's about so much more. It's really (unintentionally) funny, but there's also a serious theme running through it that's really good. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_King_of_Kong:_A_Fistful_of_Quarters
Roderick Posted September 6, 2007 Now you've made me very curious. I expect this is an arthouse release or is it in actual cinemas?
Marek Posted September 6, 2007 Yeah not playing back to back with Harry Potter or anything.
miffy495 Posted September 7, 2007 It'll be playing at my theater as soon as it makes its way to Calgary. I'm really pumped for it, but have been for a while. The amount of time its taking in getting here makes me wonder how many prints they've been able to afford to get made, but whatever. It's up there with Rocket Science on my must-see-as-soon-as-it-hits list.
elmuerte Posted September 7, 2007 o m g ... that guy even had to cry because he couldn't get a score of 1m ... ... weird...
Marek Posted September 7, 2007 What, you never cry when you can't get a score of 1 million? Be honest now.
Roderick Posted September 7, 2007 Marginally related: yesterday I saw the first episode of Office US that made me creep behind the couch for reasons of embarrassment. The David Brent ripoff and Dwight visited a convention where they had to give a speech. The former tried his god-awful jokes and got no response, the latter copied one of Himmler's speeches. It was awesome, and terrifying. First time the series managed to do that and reminded me of the original UK show.

nsps Posted September 7, 2007 I return from my multi-month bout with mono (still going on) to say that, yes, "King of Kong" is both hilarious and observant. I saw another nostalgia doc, "Chasing Ghosts," at Sundance, and it was more of a character study of the people who were photographed in the Life Magazine shoot mentioned in this movie. What "Kong" captures that "Ghosts" doesn't is the way this nerdy clique reacts when an outsider threatens their top score. nsps Posted September 7, 2007 Now you've made me very curious. I expect this is an arthouse release or is it in actual cinemas? I give this statement a To answer your question, it's an art-house release, but it could find its way to some commercial megaplexes as well.
