  1. Social Justice

As a Canadian who just (like two hours ago) got home from a week's vacation in the States, I'd just like to throw in how continually weirded out I am by the fact that Democratic Socialism is considered a fringe thing down South. Good on you though! Change (and normalization) has to start somewhere!
  2. HEY ZEUS, I ALSO LIKE DAN RYCKERT. Like, I can 100% see why some of the things that he says are problematic, but I give him credit for gradually figuring out his shit and becoming a demonstrably better person over the years that he has worked at GB. I really didn't like him at first, but it has actually been incredibly impressive and affirming to watch him grow as a person and become so much more than he was. He is an intelligent and open-minded person who, yes, believes some backwards shit. The thing is, he used to believe so much MORE backwards shit and his open-mindedness has actually given me a lot of hope for the site and for gamers in general. His specific advice on dealing with anxiety and depression is bad, I agree. It is also painful to me as someone who is in a 10+ year relationship with a woman who has struggled with these things since she was 13, watching her go through medications, programs, therapists, etc etc etc. BUT on so many things that troubled me about him, he has started to come around. He has become much more progressive, and (despite GB having no explicit political view) the times that it has been necessary to say something he has. GBEast is a lot more political than West (thanks, lingering influences of Patrick and Austin!), and he seems to have actually taken up some of that as well. Some of the reason that I like him probably comes from our starts in life being so similar (I was also a gifted kid in a small town that didn't know what to do with those, then got into a prestigious school program by accident by going to the wrong homeroom on the first day of 8th grade and having them make the audible call that I was bright enough to stay. So, y'know, lucky, intelligent, but also kinda dumb). I had the open-minded switch thrown on me a few years earlier than him so have had more time to make progress, but a lot of what I see in him tracks to my own awakening to societal responsibility and expanding world-view. I think Dan is far from perfect, and certainly not a great source for advice, but damn if I'm not encouraged by him and think that, as a human being, he is on an impressive journey and I'm enjoying watching him take it.
  3. Splatoon is Ink-redible

Yeah, I got mobbed by glowing dudes when I started it up last. No idea what the hell happened there, but it was neat and really messed with me. Into it.
  4. Splatoon is Ink-redible

Huh. Well, good to know! It's super weird that it doesn't tell me that you joined intentionally though. Man, even when Nintendo gets online right, they still find ways to get online wrong...
  5. Splatoon is Ink-redible

Got randomly matched up against YoThatLimp this afternoon. Not gonna say who won (Ok, I will. It was me!), but it was fun to bump into a Thumb in the wild. Unfortunately, as my screen name right now is just "Pete", I doubt he knew I was up against him. Good round though!
  6. Painting tabletop miniatures

I love everything about Stabby Ork Dancer.
  7. Splatoon is Ink-redible

Accepted! Just got through the second boss in SP and had three rounds of Salmon Run. Threw out my back at the gym yesterday (Lost balance and fell backwards during a lift. Caught myself, but pulled something doing so) which, while bad, I guess was timed pretty well as I will be stuck on the couch for a few days. This and Nier will be my panacea. I guess I should probably sign up for discord, huh?
  8. Splatoon is Ink-redible

I'm also playing and am up for some rounds. I assumed that you'd be able to start a private match of Salmon Run even if they didn't have it in the rotation, but apparently it's not an option? What the actual hell, Nintendo? It's a weird decision already to limit pub games to specific times, but to not even have it be an option if you have a group ready to go is beyond stupid. Oh well. I am 5 levels deep in the Single Player and really enjoying it, and have got myself up to level 4 on Turf War so that I can now buy items and play Salmon Run if there's a game going. Hit me up if you see me online! Just got myself up to level 4 before leaving for the gym, so I'll probably be on again later tonight once I get home.
  9. Duolingo - TWO LANGUAGE-O

This, but replace "Spanish" with "French".
  10. NieR: automobile

Before I click on any spoilers, I'm doing pretty much everything I can to get every sidequest done in my first playthrough. I'm actually doing a damn tonne of them and really enjoying it. Can people confirm that once they're done, they're done? Like, any sidequest I finished on playthrough 1 is automatically done for any +s?
  11. I actually got both the no kills and no alarms achievements in Human Revolution, and that experience is one of the main reasons I haven't played Mankind Divided. I know it's not the fun way to play, but if that achievement is there, I also know myself well enough to know that I'm going to play it the less fun way anyway so that I can get the cheevo. I really hate that about myself sometimes, but here we are. (also, happy belated birthday, 'blix! I know we don't really do the birthday thread in IB anymore, but I figured I'd give you a shout out somewhere...)
  12. NieR: automobile

Yeah, I'm totally just doing them all. Except that there are a few that I'm obviously not leveled enough for yet. Turns out that being level 14 and trying to take on that level 40 black belt robot doesn't really pan out. I'm also under-leveled to escort the robot parade. I did get all of the stamps in the park though, even that one that you have to do a bunch of fighting for. Turns out that these side quests are actually pretty good and worth doing, and I've got about 15% of them done after a day, so maybe it isn't so bad. My big worry is that after tomorrow I'm out of town for a week, home for a day, and then out of town again for another 4 days. I'm really afraid of losing my spot and not remembering how to do stuff when I get home. Oh well. It's a damn good game.
  13. Modest Tech: The NX Generation (Nintendo Switch)

So on Wednesday I'm flying from Calgary to Halifax. This means a total of about 5 hours in the air, with a 3 hour layover in Toronto. I intend to bring my Switch. I'm a bit into Shantae (just opened the race level), Thumper (about halfway through world 4), and have a few levels left in Snake Pass that I haven't beaten yet. I'm looking for stuff to keep me going on the long trip. Anyone have suggestions?
  14. NieR: automobile

I just got to the robot village for the first time, and I have to say: the side quests are overwhelming me. I don't like having ANYTHING undone in my quest log, and I've stopped playing games due to the "drowning in side quests" feeling before. I don't want to do that with this because I've really liked what I've seen so far otherwise. Anyone have tips for dealing with this?
  15. DOTA 2

In our defense, us teachers don't get a lot of time to practice during the school year.
  16. Modest Tech: The NX Generation (Nintendo Switch)

Snake Pass is good and worth your time and money.
  17. RetroThumbs

I had better fucking be able to get one, is all I'll say.
  18. Modest Tech: The NX Generation (Nintendo Switch)

Is there more to it? I had an ok time in the test punch and came away mildly impressed but feeling like that sample may have been all the Arms I needed...
  19. Life

Agreed. Your father is as big a family commitment as someone else's kids are to them. You've got loads of time to give people advance notice. If what's holding you back is "their family is more important than my family", check yourself and go on that vacation.
  20. Recently completed video games

Really glad to hear about the checkpoint every two or three obstacles later, because I did levels 8 and 9 tonight and, while I'm definitely getting a lot more comfortable with the controls (SHIT THIS FEELS GOOD TO PLAY), there were a few moments in level 8 in particular during spinning platform gauntlets where I died on my fourth or fifth try and shouted at my Switch "A CHECKPOINT HALFWAY THROUGH THIS SET OF THINGS WOULD BE REAL FUCKING NICE!" Then my girlfriend got mad because I was playing handheld mode in bed and she was trying to sleep. I should not play Snake Pass after bedtime. Still, I think I had my own epiphany moment this time. I need to feather the ZR button and not just always be moving forward. I actually scaled a completely vertical pole doing that right before I stopped playing, which made me realize that some coins I skipped in earlier levels are actually kind of easy to get now that I know how. As I understand it, beating the game gives you collectible radar for level replays on anything you missed, so I may actually try to 100% this one. It really does feel amazing when you hit the zone.
  21. Recently completed video games

I played a tonne of it yesterday as part of a lazy Sunday. It's pretty great, but damn, level 7 had me ready to throw my Switch. I really wouldn't mind the difficulty at all, except that the checkpoints are SO BAD. Still, I'm gonna go back to it and keep going. What would you say was the point that you hit where it gelled for you?
  22. RetroThumbs

Yeah, I guess the WiiU is staying hooked up for quite a while for Virtual Console needs if this is the way it's going on the Switch. Shame. I would love to be able to take all of those with me.
  23. After devoting hundreds of hours to Guitar Hero and Rock Band I got back into the real guitar after dropping it in high school. I continue to play Rocksmith with it, but also just PLAY now and I love that it's something I can do. For my school's Canada Day celebration, my 5th grade class and I learned a bunch of voyageur songs together and had a sing-along day. Wouldn't have been able to do that without those games getting me back on track musically.
  24. I wanna Lords Management! (PS4)

Yeah, can't help you much on PS4, but backing up HotS if you have a PC that can run it at all. I've found every other LoMa game I've tried before ridiculously overwhelming and was put off by them, but HotS managed to draw me in in a way that none of the others did. It's so damned accessible and immediately fun, but also super deep.
