  1. Splatoon is Ink-redible

I pretty much only use the NZAP 89 and it getting a buff is maybe an indication that it's not the best choice... Does anyone have good anti-slosher or anti-sniper strategies? Against sloshers, I can only really try to get behind them but with snipers I'm just completely lost.
  2. Bought it this morning and was almost late to work because I couldn't stop playing. Seriously solid action game here And not only is there one guy doing both the visuals and the programming, I'm pretty sure I remember reading this is the first game he's made.
  3. Unity Tutorials

Honestly, I would recommend staying away from Unity for a bit. Full featured game engines like Unity can be very complex and assume a lot of knowledge of both programming and graphics tech (especially if you're doing anything 3D). When I was getting into this stuff, I knew I would probably eventually end up with Unity but I started with Python and Gamemaker scripting before making the leap. That's probably not sexy but starting smaller is great for learning programming AND learning how to design a game. I'd suggest trying something in Javascript/HTML5 or Python first, and reading language intros for whatever you go with. If you want to stay focused on games, there's a good book on Python/Pygame here (http://inventwithpython.com/pygame/index.html) and honestly just looking through W3 Schools stuff for Javascript ain't too bad either (http://www.w3schools.com/js/js_loop_for.asp). Learning Gamemaker well enough to transition from drag-and-drop to actual scripting would also be a really good intro (if you can stomach the UI), all the general concepts are the same as other languages and you can find plenty of tutorials for both the visual and the scripting.
  4. Splatoon is Ink-redible

Regarding plaza animations: I think the plaza just has a bunch of kid location/animations and fills those in randomly with people from Miiverse. The only things that are individual are the Miiverse post and the clothes. I've been playing solid for the last month since I finally got good internet out here in the country. Absolutely totally in love with this game and I rarely get into competitive multiplayer. Right now I'm around level 23 with a solid B in the rankings. I'm still totally in love so I think I'll see if I can't push that ranking up into the A levels. I agree with TangoCharlie on Japanese players. I don't think there's necessarily any correlation of skill, just that there are a lot more of them. It was funny how much longer it took to get a game going on this latest splatfest just because Japanese players were excluded.
  5. I would recommend finding some way to try them before going full hog. I borrowed a copy of 2 from a friend because I kept hearing for years about the games and so this was something I HAD to do. Turns out the gunplay is dreadful, the platforming mediocre, and the story is just kind of there. (Also, similar to Far Cry 4 it seemed really weird and gross to use a recent civil war in Nepal as a story backdrop and like, not even talk about it at all??) Obviously some advances in animation and presentation but yeah.. Maybe I missed something from not playing the first but I found it a chore to play and quit after about 5 hours :/
  6. The Unity Thread

Gaining access to all those pro features with 5 was such a godsend! That said, I'm using them in a game now and the edge detection is unsatisfactory (even with over an hour's worth of tweaking) and the bloom introduces a horrible and hilarious rendering bug. Looks like I get to learn how to write screen space shaders if I ever get the motivation to push through the hard stuff...
  7. Amateur Game Making Night

Nice, I remember all 3 were pretty fun. Pretty cool to just have a vehicle battling game in the back pocket to tinker with from time to time. That and your avatar reminds me I should really get a basic prototype up and running for my top-down Interstate 76 idea... Also Dino, thanks for sharing those effects!! Keijiro's got so much incredible stuff but these in particular are getting downloaded and bookmarked. Now every game can be a Kane & Lynch game!
  8. Amateur Game Making Night

Do I smell a little Extreme-G battle mode influence? Because that would be divine.
  9. Cartoons!

Yeah, that definitely seems to be the theme for this season of Rick & Morty. Every episode is like a really fun and crazy roller coaster that inevitably goes off the rails and crashes horribly. In a good way. Have fun with the ending of ep 3, btw... But I also think you're right about Bojack, that darkness pervades. Its quality is obvious and lovely but just so, so heavy. Probably why I'm having a hard time sticking with it as opposed to super-dark-but-mostly-pretending-otherwise shows like R&M or Venture Bros (or for 'real' sitcoms, It's Always Sunny or Black Books)
  10. Idle Workouts

I've been using the Wii Fit activity meter for a few months now and I actually really like it. Previously I think it was dismissive of Fitbit, etc. but the amount of useful info the activity meter has been really cool. Stuff that I would've never thought deeply about, like just HOW sedentary my programming job is is pretty helpful. In response to that, I now always use the bathroom on the other floor. Not huge, but a definite change in habit. There's also a nice, if under-utilized feature that will has a target calorie count for each day, based on an overall goal you put into the full app. Pretty nice for maintaining activity on the weekends where I'd normally skip a workout in favor of playing games in bed or somethin' Will probably get a Fitbit when I transition to doing more stuff beyond Wii Fit in the next few months, I've heard nothing but good things about them and I am responding well to the general concept of a fitness tracker. I think it's better for us nerdly types who love data but most people don't want or need that much info.
  11. Cartoons!

Rick and Morty also gets real fucking dark, which makes me love it a million times more. Bojack I've struggled with and stalled out halfway through season 1. Apparently I need to get all the way through the season to fall in love, but I dunno... is it bad if I want a little more levity from a show about a washed up horse celebrity?
  12. The threat of Big Dog

Part of me is like "oh, the shakiness and the recoil mean that thing will be impossible, I don't feel that scared" and then the other part is like "a team of engineers could solve most of those problems in a matter of weeks." I suppose that's rather the theme of this thread!
  13. Games w/ Level Editors

Portal 2 has the best, most accessible, editor I've ever had the pleasure of working with. So simple and powerful, plus you can take your levels made with the in-game editor and polish them up after in Hammer. Radiant is a great suite to learn and people always forget about it when recommending UE/Hammer. It's based off Doom 3 and is crazy powerful now (all COD games use some version of it). Brendon Chung of Blendo Games is using it to make Quadrilateral Cowboy and there's also a modified 'DarkRadiant' version for that remake of the original Thief. Maybe not as much community content as with UE/Hammer but there is some stuff and it might be even better for a resume/portfolio Anyone mess around with the FarCry 4 editor? It has all the single-player features that FC3's lacked so I'm really curious about how powerful it is.
  14. [DevLog] Aloft - Airship Pioneers

This is great, can't wait to see more GIFs and progress updates. It's interesting, trying to find the line between making something accurate and making something that is, for lack of a better word, romantic with simulation games. Euro Truck Sim 2 and Kerbal Space Program both do really well in landing somewhere in the middle (especially Kerbal). I think a lot of it comes down to interface and accessibility. Good to see you're thinking a bit about those things already!
  15. Playscii by JP Lebreton

This is a super cool tool and I hope more people use it to make games and other things with it. Only played around with it a bit but there's a great feature that can render any image into a Playscii image. Really fun to try out with movie stills and landscapes
  16. Comics Extravaganza - Pow Bang Smash!

I am really, really super burned out on superhero comics (except Astro City). Are Ms. Marvel or Captain Marvel good enough to shine through the boring punching-bad-guys saving-the-world stuff? Also I really need to pick up that W+D v2, so much hype for that series right now. Here's hoping they don't fuck up the TV adaptation
  17. Comics Extravaganza - Pow Bang Smash!

Yeah, thinking back now I should have said Ex Machina rather than Y. The art was indeed pretty weird in the last couple arcs but the story itself seemed like a mad dash to tie things up neatly. As for Y, I just think I never really clicked with that book. On another topic entirely, I just read We3 for the first time and it was god damn excellent. Maybe one of the best mini-series ever. I'm not always a fan of Morrison but We3 is something very special indeed.
  18. Philosophy & Economics

Quick recommendation to check out Paul Mason who's been covering the situation in Greece for a number of years and is perhaps the economics journalist with the greatest access to Syriza. His twitter is good but for nearly-daily summaries, his video blogs are really dang good: (latest one)
  19. Comics Extravaganza - Pow Bang Smash!

Saga is indeed great but BKV has a tendency to lose interest/enthusiasm after a few years with his ongoing series. I could tolerate that with Y but it would really hurt if Saga started dipping noticeably
  20. Feminism

http://www.nytimes.com/2015/07/11/movies/at-comic-con-it-feels-like-the-year-of-the-woman.html?_r=0 Don't have any comment on the content, really, but it's pretty cool to see this report coming from big ol' A.O. Scott
  21. Jurassic World: Wasting away in Margaritaville

Utterly without substance but pretty entertaining! A definite mom-pleaser I read an article somewhere that posited that the theme park was a stand-in for the idea of the "summer blockbuster" where Hollywood's attempts to create bigger and bigger tentpole films set to destroy the entire industry. Not sure if that's what the original screenwriter intended but thinking about it made the movie a lot better!
  22. Philosophy & Economics

When has a free trade deal been anything but a disaster for workers rights? Glad to see there is strong opposition for maybe the first time ever but my it's only a stumbling block as the reasons for opposition are technical rather than ethical.
  23. Post Apocalyptic Books

There is a significant chunk of The Bone Clocks that features a post-apocalypse that is scarily believable.
