That episode was really nice. I like that podcast a lot, though I think the individual episode quality varies a lot. Probably as a result of being the core to a for profit podcasting network and having to regularly put episodes. In particular with that episode I thought it was funny how they obviously had to put in tons of work for what was supposed to come off as an episode where they packed it in to just wander around goofing off.

Idle Thumbs 225: Read Our Lips

Why record new stuff for the Breckon Remo pack? There's surely enough material to mangle into an audio pack from the episodes. -
I think we should be discussing how Islam is the light.

Who cares what they want Gor. Apply anyway. It's up to you to apply for jobs* and they're the ones who should say no, not you. * Caveat, if you think it would be mentally taxing to you or worry you, then maybe not, but don't do it because you assume you can't fit the role. I almost didn't apply for my current job cause I don't have a degree in anything programming related, I'm just self taught. But it turns out I'm pretty much exactly what they needed here and I was entirely wrong about who would suit the job. Course I was lucky and just happened to fit despite myself, but I still could have stopped myself from trying. I'm glad I didn't (though I had to be partly coaxed into it) and you shouldn't stop yourself here if it's just cause you assume you're unsuitable.

Yeah I read a blogpost someone wrote about how she was working in a really nice office that made a specific effort to address microagressions and prejudice in company culture. It was a good positive article about how to make the effort in ways that matter. It was bombarded with shitty comments, but a couple of times I did see the sentiment "I don't understand how you americans haven't gotten past that yet, we're fine over here." I think being such big media present country gives you some big media present assholes for the rest of the world to remember you by.

Nice! Keep us posted. I'm curious what the next franchise might be, not that it matters as much since I was neither a fan of Hitman nor Tomb Raider as much as this ____ Go series.

It really sucked to hear about you move Danielle! As expensive and difficult a long distance move in Ireland is, I know it's worse over there. I hope there's something positive in all the mess for you at least once the dust settles. (we did find a place that we deemed actually quite nice all things considered. Wish it was just a lil cheaper though. It ain't easy to pay two rents when only one of us works)

But I heard war never changes. -
Two cool too cool things! I listened to your first episode and I'm digging it. Nice to hear a gaming podcasts with stories. Also I loved Hit Mango. What part of Tomb Raid Ergo did you work on barichnikov?

This in no way constitutes legal advice, just my moral thoughts. If you're confident that you have done your due diligence in trying to contact this person, I think it's ok to release the clone as long as you'll recognise that it's not wholly your work. If the original creator comes forward about it, you should be willing to offer them some cut if they want it (though what amount is fair, I have no idea). I think your game should acknowledge the source even if the creator never surfaces. You've still done real work so I wouldn't claim it's not yours but I'd consider it important to acknowledge to yourself and the players that someone else's game was your jumping off point.

I don't know good resources for smooth camera control, but why give the player access to those controls? Why not just have the camera fixed view based on where the snake is going. ie. It's always facing directly forward from the snake's head. If you did that it could just be parented to the head and always follow the players movement instead. I'm not suggesting it just as a shortcut by the way, I actually think it might work better design wise.

My girlfriend is one such student in a university that's actually out of the way from the centre itself, but is luckily able to find families that can offer their spare room for just over half a grand a month (no weekends).

Apartment hunting is the most torturous experience I've had to go through and I'm now doing it for the 4th time in 2 years (not strictly for myself but just as awful as if it was).

Idle Thumbs 224: Ms. Petman
SuperBiasedMan replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
Idle Thumbs Episode 224 Games discussed: Robert Crumb, Taylor Swift There's definitely a big part of sexism to this, but I think there's the difference between the media intent of a large corporate device and an individual creator. The assumption is that Taylor Swift is not a singular voice dictating her output. At the very least it's massaged through the machine that produces her media, it's absolutely not the unfiltered output that R Crumb is described as producing. Realistically, this should make R Crumb more culpable as he is not being pushed to change or decide things that aren't his intent while Taylor Swift surely is. But people respond differently to the motivations of these things. If TS is doing problematic stuff at the behest of a company it's disingenuous and therefore much more morally reprehensible. However RC is just putting out his honest thoughts and feelings so even if there are problematic elements it's honest. I can see why the dishonesty tastes more sour, but realistically Taylor Swift is probably just one of the faces of the disingenuous company. There is also presumably the feeling that TS talks to a lot of impressionable young people, which is a fair point but still not fair measure to draw against her when presumably RC also has influence over a group with his level of notability. (I'm not at all familiar with RC's work, just familiar with the name as a comic artist) (Also Claire I don't know where/how else to say this, but you're a great addition to these forums especially in discussions like this. Glad you're here!) -
So I'm embarking on an independent intended to actually be released as a Real Gametm. As this isn't something I've done before, I'm trying to figure out the process. I definitely want to hop on the social media/post screenshots/blog development bandwagon and I was wondering if people had many tips here? There's a sea of info about exactly when and where to post and then there's also posts abound about general advice like socialing early and often. I was just wondering if any of you peeps on here had stories of experiences trying to take this kind of advice and how it went for you.

I wanna see your gifs when you can post them! I love the art in Road Not Taken and Alphabear.

To add a tiny note to the massive discussion, I have to just say again. Is it really worth taking an element of a culture when it is potentially harmful? Just like with saying potentially offensive words, wouldn't you rather just not do it when you have so many other options?

Please don't post in this thread, at least not if it's challenging people like this. You've made it clear in other places that your views go against the majority of people here and it has led to debates. That's fine. But this topic is a huge deal and is not to be taken lightly. Regardless of how you say it, correcting things or pointing out contrary stuff to people is partly antagonistic and will turn this thread to debate which is honestly not what people have generally used this thread for. I don't want this to read as if I'm saying that you can't have opinions or you're not allowed to voice them here. I'd just really like if you could consider deeply whether they're really worthwhile for this particular thread and maybe conclude that wanting to say something isn't always a good enough reason to say it.

For anyone who hasn't played yet, it doesn't lead you in well. I recommend playing a few games and accept that you'll do poorly and not follow. Just take the time to figure out what roles do and what the chat dynamic is.

Kraft - a text based iddle game im working on.

Oh, that makes sense! I think then, even if you don't want to add a dieing mechanic then it'd be good to signal that they're out of action somehow.- 4 replies

I played a bit of this yonks back. It was pretty fun. I played one game as the jester (who's goal is to be hanged) and completely confused everyone with erratic aggressive behaviour so they resolved to hang me. 8) I'm up for some more games of it when I can hop on a computer.

Kraft - a text based iddle game im working on.
SuperBiasedMan replied to Morpheox's topic in Game Development
Huh, it's funny I never saw the Idle of Idle Thumbs this way. I think you're mistaken about what this forum is for, haha. It's a forum for a podcast called Idle Thumbs, not idle games specifically. But people post here about all sorts of games they're working on so this is still a good place to post. I had a quick game, I could only sit at my computer so long this morning, so I didn't have time to get deep into the idling but I definitely have some nitpicky thoughts. Saying "wood consumption: -0.20/s" actually makes me unsure if this person is using up that wood per second or is slowing it's consumption somehow. I personally think removing the minus and instead changing the text to be red would be clearer. On that note, I know it's super early in development but it'd be good to adjust how it looks a bit. I'd prefer the boxes that explain what a button does to hover to the right of the buttons. At the moment I think they're appearing just to the right of the text, but that's less neat. If they were all to the right of the button they'd line up better too. Also a tiny nitpick is that the text in the top left and top right (the population counter and the title with your email address) are a bit too close to the edge, I'd like if they were padded in a little. I know early on visuals aren't the focus, but these are small enough changes to make (I think) and if you do them now you don't need to worry about them later. I also like direction it seems to be heading where everything is capped so there's actually something to manage (unlike in most I've played before, where resources go up exponentially and then you just divert them into getting more resources). I'll probably sneakily play in work tomorrow... I do have to second that occasional typos and grammatical errors irked me. Funnily enough, I did get confused by one but it was one you did in this post. I assume you meant 'idle' when you said 'iddle', but I thought it was a joke/meant to be 'little' at first. Given that there's not that much text (I think?) I could possibly look over it to do minor corrections if you want. I don't wanna be too forward but just if you'd be interested you can let me know here/in a message. Looking forward to getting a proper go of it! EDIT: I did the terrible thing and after getting a population I turned off my farms, and let the food plummet to -0.02. It's a bit of a shame nothing happens there (yet) so I hope there's a plan for it. Also it may be a bug that it can go that low? Since it's stopped there I presume it's only meant to reach 0 and not lower.- 4 replies
