Idle Thumbs 199: Bogost in the Shell
Spenny replied to Chris's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
If you want to hear a nice podcast interview with R.L. Stein, check this out. Bob Stein wanted to be a comedy writer. In the Goosebumps hay day he was writing a new one every month. -
I thought a good word for when how you kind of enjoy the smell of your own fart would be a smellfie.

I got a new (used) car and tomorrow I go to San Francisco for GDC. That's good stuff.

Idle Thumbs 199: Bogost in the Shell

I think both that and Goosebumps were produced as a joint between Nickelodeon and YTV, with production being done in Canada. If you're a Toronto native, you will recognize a lot of the shooting locations. -
I'd be interested in hearing your report on the experience of playing more Buffalo. I had it demoed to me at GDC last year and almost picked it up before deciding my gaming group probably wouldn't get into it, I think a lot of them being sort of anti pop culture.

GDC 2015 I know I'm not the only game developer on these forums. I know there are a few SF residents. Last year we met up and had a good time! Well, I assume it was a good time, my provincial government got me drunk beforehand, so I assume that means that the Ontario government loves me meeting other thumbs, maybe? Anyways, I had a blast. We'll plan a meetup this year again, but I'll give people the chance to figure out their personal schedules before we hammer any details out. In the mean time, who's going? What's everybody looking forward to? Any sessions caught your eye?

This thing is happening soon! I'm of course prepping for it by making sure I have a party to attend every night. Also looking forward to escaping the brutal cold. GDC is hella expensive. I'm sure it would be minimum three grand if I were footing the bill.

I hate grocery shopping so the once a week trip is ideal. The immediate solution to my car troubles seems to be me taking my girlfriend's car. It's standard, I don't have experience driving standard. We did a quick lesson at lunch, and I just took it on my own to shuffle parking spots (ugh cars amirite?) I feel like I'm a driving baby.

I don't think it's US and Europe divide, but more of a country/suburban vs urban divide, and then dependent on the quality of public transit, or general density of that urban area.

I have the weird problem of living in an urban area but needing to commute out to the suburbs for work. If I could live and work in the urban area I would abandon owning a car. There are great affordable services if you live in the city and occasionally need a car.

Yeah, that's a fair point Dibs. 1600 dollars is what it will cost to fix the shitmobile, so looks like I'm in the market for a new car. Fortunately I knew my car's days were numbered so I have been saving for this, but still, this is stress in my life I don't want.

I've really been wracking my brain to come up with an idea for a Sharecart game. It's such a weird constraint. I am so often used to thinking about games as having progress, but because the nature of the Sharecart, progress kind of becomes meaningless. Except, maybe there's the possibility of having a mechanic where you have to load in a save to progress, or beat the game, but then other games might set your progress back, so progress in a game is kind of out. Does that mean the only option is procedural stuff? Just random exploratory procedural garbage? I think I'll have to check out some of the existing games Sharecart games later and maybe that can shape up my ideas.

I hate owning a car, I hate having to own a car. Battery died from the cold yesterday, jump started it, then found out something is wrong with the brakes, which made for a pretty scary drive home. It's in the garage now, but I'm really not looking forward to the call telling me how much its going to cost me to continue driving my shitmobile.

My "liquor cabinet" is the top of my kitchen's cabinetry, at 6'2" I can reach everything fine, but my girlfriend has to grab the step ladder. I instinctively place my hand on my forehead walking down basement stairs, because that has been the source of many bonks.

I played my first game of Archipelago last night after a very informative tutorial my friend gave me. Boy is it a complex game. Hopefully that means more to dive into as the game group keeps playing it.

Idle Thumbs 196: Ode on a Grecian Hat Sale
Spenny replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
I always saw achievement chasing as a way to add more game to a game. I can beat the game sure, but here are a bunch more optional objectives, more things to do. Achievements were super great when I was in high school and had lots of time for games, but not a lot of money for them. -

Yes, this was the exact reason for my hesitation in claiming it a TRUE FACT.
