Game Music!

A place to present some of the cool noises that come out of your games sometimes. Also some context as to the desired effect of the track for your game would be nice.

Here's a song I have for a top-down game about exploring abandoned space ships. The song is intended to play during the actual exploration.

heres a screenshot of the main characters little personal ship that you spawn in at the beginning of the level:

Nice one, I can see that working well :).

If I could offer one suggestion, that you add some reverb to your synths, in particular the one that features from the intro onward. The mix is too in your face and personal for your games setting so reverb would open it up and give it a more ethereal space like feeling.

Actually i'm just thinking about it, if you have an ambient loop playing aswell as the music it might all meld together and give the desired effect without reverb.

Anyway heres some stuff I have floating around.

This was from a sound design thing I had to do for school, I stripped out the dialog to upload here.

I was going for that Hans Zimmer big blockbuster thing. Id like to do more stuff like it in a game.

This is just a little portion of an idea. It distorts digitally and stuff so its not too pretty yet but its something I kind of want to show.

I don't have any composing or music-playing ability, but I really love this little tune I had a friend make for my Public Domain Jam game, Surfenstein. I wanted a surf rock tune with a spooky vibe so what I initially asked for was "

but played on an Organ." Before I got the first draft of his song, I was using a slowed down, echo-y version of
as a placeholder. Where we ended up was a little more straight surf rock, which I think is tonally about perfect for the game.

For context, the game:

The song:

And this is his bands tumblr, which mostly seems to be links to articles about NYCs rat infestation http://theratproblem.tumblr.com/

I was listening to the first track you posted and my room mate yelled from the other room 'Are you watching that stupid show again?' meaning Game of Thrones! So I think you might have accomplished the epic blockbuster motif.

I just came across Bosca Ceoil. It's a loop-based music composition program made by Terry Cavanagh, the maker of VVVVVVVVVVV and other games.

It's a small program that's very upfront about it's limitations, but it's extremely good at what it does. I found it to be a joy to use, and made this little tune for a game I'm working on in about half an hour. Out of the several music composition programs that I've tried, this one has come closest to being as fun and intuitive to use as an actual instrument.

There are a few aspects of the program that you might not pick up on your own, so give the web page a scan after messing around with it for a bit.

I finally messed around with this for a little while last night and I think it will be an invaluable tool for me in the future. It is almost exactly what I've been looking for, and I found it to be very intuitive. I think the song I made is probably awful, but it was easy to make and it feels like the tool is flexible enough for me to learn and make good stuff down the road. If I have time for music during ludum dare this weekend, this is for sure what I'll be using to make it. Thanks!
