G2Play.net: A site that sells Steam game codes cheaper!

Recommended Posts

I discovered this site this week on Savvy Gamer and got Saints Row The Third pretty cheap, to have something to play while I waited for Skyrim.

And then I found out I was an idiot and never hit "Checkout", on a whim I visited this site and saw it had more or less the same price as UK online stores, not to mention I got an extra discount with their point system!

Is it a bit strange, the Saints Row key was text, but the Skyrim one was an image of the code.

Has anybody else used this site? What do you think of it? It kinda ridiculous that we have even more crazy cheap Steam games. :gaming::frusty::gaming::clap:

You know what? I was pretty sure this was sketchy, but then thought that I HAD been seeing you playing SR3 on Steam for a few days now so I checked it out. $22 for a game I've been salivating over since release but had been waiting for a price drop before buying? Yeah, ok. Well, it's in my Steam library now, so I guess this stuff works. Thanks for the tip, Tanu!

I has Paypal, which makes it more trustworthy to me, I'd rather not give my credit card to anybody nowadays.:shifty:

It's probably more trustworthy than Play or TheHut, since they are dealing with digital goods, there should be less hassle if anything ever happens?

Of course, we won't know how good or bad they costumer service is until something bad happens.

Yeah, I too paypal-ed it, despite Paypal being a sack of shit lately. At least I wasn't giving anyone my credit card info. There was a worry that the code just wouldn't show up for a bit, but then I got the email and it worked in my Steam client, so all is well.

Does anyone know what is Valve's stance towards these kind of services? Is it likely that they will prevent people from activating the keys at some point due region restrictions or whatever?

Selling the Russian versions at least seems a bit sketchy.

It's worth noting that not everything on the site is steam-compatible, so make sure that you're picking up the proper version if/when you do it. Are the Russian versions in question things that activate on Steam?

Some seem to be:

Important Notice:

Buy this product only if you understand the riskat your own responsibility!

Russian IP address is required to activate the key on Steam!

Use a Russian VPN to do so.

Once the game is activated you can log in and play from anywhere.

Yes, this is where I bought Saints Row too. I've ordered there before (Deus Ex, Rage) and it saves quite a pretty penny.

If you type g2play.net on the official steam forums, it automatically changes it to steampowered.com, so that might give you an indication what Valve's stance is.

Ah. That would be Dead Island or Deus Ex or something? Yeah, I'd say it's pretty worth checking down the full list of notifications before actually making any purchases on this site. Also, it's worth mentioning that I actually read the whole terms of service before doing anything with this site, which is something that, honestly, most of us probably take for granted when creating an account somewhere. Gotta make sure everything is on the up and up.

Well, I used this service with a visa gift card + paypal to buy The Witcher 2 for $19, so the stakes are pretty low. All seems to be going well for now, though it did show up as a RU key when I activated it. Downloading it with no hitches so far, though I'm curious to see whether or not it'll default the language to something other than English.

I just bought a Russian key for Battlefield 3 - though admittedly not from this site specifically - and it came Russian. That said, the seller gave me detailed instructions for how to download and apply English language packs. I would imagine that site has something similar going on if it's necessary.

It seems this isn't quite illegal, but it's definitely a bit shady. I mean, region locking sucks badly, and it's good there are ways around it, but this is just exploiting the fact that games are sold a lot cheaper in Russia (and probably some other places) than the rest of the world.

Probably this is to get people in Russia to actually buy non-pirated games. When I used to buy/rent pirated games years ago (the shop was also run by Russians) I think the pirated games they sold actually had about the same price as legal copies in Russia nowadays.
