Erkki Posted January 13, 2011 Didn't see a thread for this. Finally started playing it last night, been enjoying it so far. The autosave could be more frequent though. I entered a battle where I had no way of knowing what was waiting for me and losing it had a result of game over Now I have to do the last 40 minutes all over again. I hope this doesn't mean I'll never play it again.
dpp Posted January 13, 2011 All the discussion is probably in the podcast threads when Chris was playing it... I loved most of the game, but it became boring by the end when you get to the labyrinth. I got the expansion packs in some Steam sale, I tried Armored Princess for a bit... and it was OK, I didn't play enough to see the difference the pet dragon brings. One awesome thing is that if you try to game the system by F5-F9ing, the game remembers the outcomes from everything you do and they'll be exactly the same if you do the same thing. Erkki Posted January 13, 2011 I'm curious whether they took a lot of inspiration from HOMM or is it all from the original King's Bounty?
Erkki Posted January 20, 2011 Well, I got pretty addicted to this, played 8-10 hours for several days, but now I've played more than 60h probably, just got to the Elves' land, getting somewhat bored. But maybe that's just me playing too much, I should just complete it over a longer period of time.
Erkki Posted February 27, 2011 Well, I got pretty addicted to this, played 8-10 hours for several days, but now I've played more than 60h probably, just got to the Elves' land, getting somewhat bored. But maybe that's just me playing too much, I should just complete it over a longer period of time. Wow, it just keeps going. I thought I was 2/3 through, but I was probably about half or so. Just entered the world of death or whatever, still haven't seen the demon lands. I'm finding it a bit unbalanced (enemies too hard, have to keep going back for more troops), but that might be because I started as a Warrior and now am leaning more towards Mage. That's another reason the game could be shorter: no sane man would replay it at this length, and I didn't want to start over just because I'm now finding that using magic is more interesting. Roderick Posted February 27, 2011 I haven't played King's Bounty, but might I inject that in most games, magic using is often the more interesting course than straight up fighting.
Erkki Posted March 6, 2011 Damn, I'm in the final level, and no money to buy troops. I have some stuff to sell, but I can't get to anywhere where I could. The dragon labyrinth doesn't let me back (or the way back is blocked by Impossible troops).
Erkki Posted March 6, 2011 Damn, I'm in the final level, and no money to buy troops. I have some stuff to sell, but I can't get to anywhere where I could. The dragon labyrinth doesn't let me back (or the way back is blocked by Impossible troops). Actually I managed to beat it, the last too bosses weren't that hard, and I found a bit more gold which helped me get enough troops to beat them. Had to do some maneuvering between enemy patrols, though. According to Steam I spent 86 hours on this (started in November or December). I loved the game overall, but it does have some flaws: 1) the game is way too long. And the latter areas are not really as interesting to play as the first ones. I liked the Freedom Islands the most, which is the second large area you get access to. 2) the class system of Warrior/Paladin/Mage has no place in this. Why do you have to make this choice in the beginning of a 80 hour game? I thought I'd like to have more troops and the troops be more powerful so chose Warrior, but in the middle of the game started to use magic more. This choice effects the semi-random drops of Might/Mind/Magic runes, which influences greatly the available skill upgrades in each category. I was always short on Mind/Magic runes. This is why I'm even considering playing again as a Paladain or Mage. The game does not warn you about this (AFAIK) and it could just as easily have let you choose which runes you want every time or otherwise made the skill tree more flexible. 3) it's a bit unbalanced, in the later parts of the game you will be constantly hiring new troops and may find yourself in a position where you are low on troops and low on money, and have to go back to some other area. Or maybe I just suck at playing these games (could be, I always was beaten by a friend in HOMM 2)
Erkki Posted March 7, 2011 Ok, I ALMOST started a new game with a Paladin, but instead I decided to pick up Crosswolrds, the expansion that includes(or does not include) the previous expansion. And the main reason I'm posting this: I opened Steam store, but being the lazy bastard I am, I didn't feel like typing in 'King's Bounty' in the search box, thinking: I've played this game for hours and hours, if I click on "Recommended for you", it better fucking recommend King's Bounty: Crosswolrds. And it did! Probably not that impressive, but nice anyway.
Erkki Posted April 6, 2011 So, I finished the Armored Princess/Crossworlds main campaign as well. They've improved on the original in some aspects, and there are some interesting maps (lizard world). Also, playing as a Paladin was much better than straight Warrior. Scarily, I've now spent 160 hours playing King's Bounty games.
