Civilization V

A trailer is available here*. I think it's cool that a strategy game trailer is able to be ten times more epic than any other game trailer.

I'm so excited about this game, even though I'll probably still perpetually be _____ the puny, like I always am in Civ 4.

Hooray for fall 2010. Please come sooner.

That's a great trailer for a Civilization game I think. Not something like:

"CIVVVV: NOW WITH HEXAGONAL TILES!"

I was kind of expecting hoping that they would show a glimpse of hexagonal tiles at the end of the trailer because that is how trailers seem to work nowadays.

Great trailer, though! The game, from the little we have seen, looks beautiful too and will no doubt be a total timesink. :(

Was the first voice in that trailer Keith David? I swear I recognized a few others too. That was pretty sweet. If they did indeed replace Nimoy's voice acting with a bunch of other people though, I will be a sad Miffy.

Seconded. It will be a whole-game experience like the one quote from Civ 4 you get for aesthetics (I think) which is mysteriously read by someone else.

The original thread wasn't good enough for ya? :mock:

I still want to talk about Civ III... As far as I'm concerned it's the pinnacle of Civ gaming. Except I haven't played Civ IV or Alpha Centauri.

I thought about it, and I always do a search for existing threads before starting a new one, but I thought that since it hasn't even been released yet I'd chance a new thread without a weird name. Who knows, maybe this thread will grow to span tens of pages. How would you feel if that long thread was named something like Civliziation 5v?! More like Wizard Rape!!!

FASCIST!!!!

Kidding. Although it IS somewhat ironic considering your previous thread titles ;) Of course, it's nice to have a little bit of order around here. I won't tell anyone that you skipped the other thread.

Finished a proper 3-day game last night. I forced myself to not avoid building military units, which let me fend off some attacks by that asshole Montezuma early on. I only had four cities (one of which was isolated from the rest by another civ's territory, which I'm not sure how to deal with properly) and by the end, around 2030, I was researching particle physics and had four complete policies, I had a pretty small military, everyone was hostile (though nobody had declared war), I had four spaceship parts done, and then for some fucking reason I build the UN and some completely unknown civ wins the game.

For a good time, peruse the list of Civilization V achievements.

That's actually what I use to direct myself in Civ V. It's one of the few cases I've really enjoyed achievements as it gives me something to aim for, at least.

Yeah, in fact I'm considering picking a couple of achievements and going for them. It would certainly help fight the feeling of helplessness that quickly sets in as more and more options present themselves.

OH YES. I did a thing I would never do, which is starting a game on the smallest map size. I quickly got four cities up and running and left the other civ in the dust. Seriously, city states were giving me free tanks whilst Washington was moving his horses around. I won the cultural victory and got a handful of achievements for it. Very fun. Also, I saved just before winning, so I can go back and probably do all the victories easy peasy.

I just got it this past weekend, and am enjoying it very much. I've never understood diplomacy in the Civ games. Is it actually possible to make a deal with another Civ that doesn't involving giving them everything you own in exchange for a couple cinnamon sticks?

One way to get more out of diplomacy is the American way: Be an aggressive superpower with lots and lots of guns. As your army grows, you'll see their end of the deal containing more and more stuff until the point at which they're just paying you tribute and you can do what you want.

Why do you not have cheats Civ 5, WHY.

I want to beat Catherine the Great about the head so hard but I can't because whatever civilization I am in charge of, they are always the special needs civ.

I need some cheat to scratch that itch and get on with my life.

Help me 'Blix.

I got this game while it was on sale, the only Civ game I played before was Civ Revolution, which I know was dumbed down so I was worried I'd suck at it.

I played as the Babylonian on a easier setting and almost immediately when Catherine the Great denounced me (was it because I didn't open borders with her? She never asked to.), she somehow stopped hating me and then hated me and started hinting at me that she might wipe me out because my military power was so puny....

So I wiped her out with my superior technology! And 200 years later... SCIENCE VICTORY!

I also don't get diplomacy, I think people were bullying me and asking for more than I got in return only because they had more military units even though mine were more advanced.

This game is less aggressive than Civ Rev, in Civ Rev other territories got worried and threatened me the moment I had better tech than them, this never happened in my Civ V game.

And maybe I wasn't playing it that well, because I never managed to be as overly advanced as my competition as compared to Civ Rev, is it possible to get a "tanks vs. spears" scenario?

Catherine is permanently on my shit list for the number of times she pulls nonsense like this. It's part of her AI; I think she's the only leader who will declare war on someone she has a declaration of friendship with. I just don't deal with her outside of luxury trades.

The diplomacy is a bit hard to get the hang of, but you start to pick up the sense behind it after a while. A few hints:

-The friendly/neutral/guarded/hostile indicator is useful, but can be misleading (Catherine is especially fond of declaring war when she appears friendly).

-You should usually get 1 for 1 luxury trades. If the AI demands extra, they don't like you.

-I'm not sure if the AI will threaten you for stuff, but your relative military power has a lot to do with whether they will attack you.

-If the AI demands extra for a research agreement (usually a couple strategic resources, ~50 gold, and open borders) it means you are a few steps ahead in the science game.

-If you sign a declaration of friendship, try to trade away all your spare luxury resources as soon as possible so your 'friend' doesn't insist on you giving your luxuries away for free. If you are asked for luxuries by a friend, definitely give it to them (especially in the early game). I started having a lot easier time in diplomacy after I began giving away free luxuries when asked.

Also: You occasionally come across a spears vs. tanks scenario, but usually because the AI hasn't bothered to upgrade units. In my current game I'm bombarding Arabian warriors with artillery, the warriors just happen to be fighting alongside cavalry. You can do some pretty anachronistic things though. I recently managed a 19th century space race win with Babylon.

One thing that seems new from Civ Rev is the tile system.

How important is buying tiles? I never bothered to buy any in my game I played, but maybe it would have helped since some cities were growing hungry near the end.

I buy only a few tiles across an entire game. I usually buy tiles to get resources I need quickly or to prevent other civs from getting them. Beside that, I might buy a valuable tile near a new city to help it get started. As long as you get around to building a couple culture buildings in each city, you should have enough land and specialist buildings for your citizens.

Starvation is mostly solved by building more farms or food buildings, but getting starvation near the end isn't a bad thing if the city is large. It's usually better to have a smaller city with high production than a large city with low production.

While we're talking about vendettas: I am eternally the enemy of Ramkhamhaeng. That guy is a jerk.

For some reason I keep getting stuff to give away on Steam. If anyone wants a copy of Civ V, let me know. It's not one of those fancy editions, I don't think.

Sounds like you might have been hit by the new Steam exploit. It makes you think you're giving away extra copies but in reality you're giving away all your shit.
