Kolzig Posted November 18, 2010 (edited) This is not about Sonic 4, but about Sonic Colors/Colours. I couldn't be bothered to give that game it's own thread as Sega clearly has not learned anything from their past mistakes. What is with the horrible autotuned crappy music? PrmdU6x6Nco They've had a big problem creating good music for Sonic games ever since the Dreamcast era began. Also why does Sonic still have to speak? Haven't they learned that at least the English audio is always horrible, has been since Sonic Adventure on the Dreamcast... I tried the DS version demo of Sonic Colours from the Nintendo Channel and I had the same feeling about that gameplay as I had about Sonic Rush. Not a very good game, the homing attack is something that of course doesn't need to be used, but I've never been a fan of this feature. The level layouts seemed pretty messy, even though some level layouts in old Sonic games were also quite "everywhere" and not always so linear looking. My problem is most likely that I value Sonic 1-3+Sonic&Knuckles so high that all these later attempts feel quite mediocre after 5 minutes of playing. Though I recently dug up old copy of Sonic Advance for Gameboy Advance and that was pretty good actually. I've read a lot of people saying that Sonic Colours for Wii is the best Sonic game in a long time, I can't say anything about that as I've only seen the youtube videos with autotuned musics. Tanukitsune Posted November 18, 2010 Isn't Sonic Rush just like Sonic Advance?
Thrik Posted November 18, 2010 Hasn't Sonic always been a bit... well, shit? I never enjoyed them much as a kid and to this day the originals and all their sequels have just not been very fun to play whenever I've given them a genuine effort. Maybe the reason no Sonic fans ever seem satisfied — even with relatively faithful efforts like Sonic 4 — is because the entire formula is complete TOSH? twmac Posted November 18, 2010 Or, maybe Sonic fans are looking for a feeling not a game. I think Sonic 4 is excellent by the way.
Kolzig Posted November 18, 2010 (edited) I have not actually played Sonic 4 ep 1 yet, so that may save a lot for Mr. Hedgehog and Sega. I don't think Sonic Advance 1 and Sonic Rush are a lot like, but I might be wrong as my experience with Sonic Advance 1 was less than 30 minutes and Sonic Rush I grinded through back when it was new and I sold the game right after that because it didn't deserve a place in my gaming shelf. I don't think Sonic is shit, at least it should not be shit when treated properly. It is a good character that had good games. Especially Sonic 2 on the Megadrive. CaptainFish Posted November 18, 2010 Sonic Colors is pretty good, although I don't think it plays a s well as the the daytime stuff in unleashed. It's got great music, beautiful levels, no hub world, levels designed for replayability to find items, and the powers are pretty cool too. I even like the aliens you're rescuing and using for powers, because it's similar to how in the genesis days he was just saving animals from being roboticized. My favorite part of the game is the story, which taking a page from Unleashed, is more reminiscent of cartoon sonic. Robotnik is a blustering villian, he's got robot sidekicks that don't follow his orders, he engages in ridiculous speeches about his plans that Sonic hears, only Sonic and Tails are there to fight him, with Tails relegated to a non heroic role, etc. There's also a lot of self awareness. The plot is that Robotnik has made a space station theme park as forgiveness for all the bad stuff he's done. It's got a very Wily-esque feel. Why are Sonic and Tails there? Because of course he's going to do something evil. There's no mega man style 'oh perhaps he's become good finally' nonsense. It's not always funny, but I really like the tone they're going for with the writing. Having played Sonic 4-1 I wished that they took a page from Sonic Team. Sonic 4 is doing 2-d levels that are more interesting in general, but Sonic Colors has controls that would fit much better. The momentum feels much better in Colors. They took out the homing attack for when there's no lock on, now when you jump instead of being shot forward you just get a slight double jump. Sooo much better for precision platforming. And things like the stomp and the slide just seem like they could have a space in an old school style Sonic.
elmuerte Posted March 27, 2012 ugh... bought it today because it was rather cheap on steam... instant regret! This game is quite a piece of shit, specially if you compare it to the classic part of Sonic Generations. First of all, it doesn't work with DirectInput gamepads, just with XInput gamepads (i.e. XBox controller). You could fix this by installing some of the XInput emulators for DirectInput gamepads. But besides that... the sound is terrible. The graphics are quite shit. And the controls are terrible (although it could be a bit because of the XInput emulator I use).
