Nappi Posted January 31, 2010 Yeah, VLC settings are mindblowing and the UI isn't too nice, but it's still a good media player. I think it helps not to go through all the settings to see if there is something to tweak (like I usually do with new programs), but to only open the thing if you really need to do something. I'm far from expert on media players, but if you would mainly be using one for watching movies or series on full screen, XBMC might be worth a try. As far as I know the codec support is excellent. The interface is pretty nice too and works well with remotes (in similar OS X program Plex with Apple remote, at least). I'm not sure how well (if at all) the mouse controls work in XBMC, though. toblix Posted January 31, 2010 The problem is, this isn't for my main media computer. On that, I just use Windows XP and WMP10, which works flawleslly. However, on my work/gaming computer I need a media player that is able to play epic 1080p x264 films at the click of a button, but also just play an MP3 when I double click it without making a big fuss. WMP11 (Vista) was able to do this, but they removed this in WMP12. VLC seems all right for both (although it looks very bad), but it doesn't support global hotkeys for some reasons. Or, it does support them, but they do not work. It always amazes me with these open source projects, how it seems people only work on awesome stuff like supporting bleeding-edge codecs, while the really simple stuff like UI and registering my God damn play/pause button never really gets done. Or it gets done, and then in the next version it doesn't work.
ThunderPeel2001 Posted January 31, 2010 The Zune Player is by far my favourite. I've not tried it in Windows 7, but it easily beats WMP and iTunes IMO. A real pleasure to use.
Erkki Posted January 31, 2010 Did you try GOM Player? I've been using that lately.
toblix Posted January 31, 2010 No, but I've lined it up for testing, along with other suggestions like MPC Home Theatre something...
vimes Posted January 31, 2010 Sure, weird play keys don't work as hotkeys, but VLC looks like this There are enough real things to complain about, don't make stuff up.
Nappi Posted January 31, 2010 Toblix had 'All' selected on 'Show settings'.
toblix Posted January 31, 2010 Sure, weird play keys don't work as hotkeys, but VLC looks like thisThere are enough real things to complain about, don't make stuff up. My play key isn't a weird play key. It's the standard play key that has been on every Microsoft/Logitech keyboard since the dawn of multimedia PCs. VLC is the only media player I have used that has not recognized it immediately. It turns out VLC does recognize it, but only sometimes. Also, I never make stuff up. It seems Media Player Classic Home Cinema is my next contestant. Also, GOM player. Will the Zune player act all weird if I don't have a Zune?
ThunderPeel2001 Posted January 31, 2010 Will the Zune player act all weird if I don't have a Zune? No, it's just a media player with a shop (which you won't be able to see -- unless you tell Windows 7 you're in the US). Just like iTunes.
toblix Posted February 1, 2010 Well, I've given Media Player Classic - Home Cinema a go, and I really like it. It does everything I want it it, except look good. It looks exactly like Windows Media player 6.4, which sucks, but it does all the other things I want it to. It plays all the formats and it stays minimized when I want it to. I don't have to get a computer science degree just to make global hotkeys work, and it's really lightweight. No media library or Twitter integration -- it just pops up and plays the files. I think I'll stay with this for a while.

miffy495 Posted February 2, 2010 Despite the signature disclaimer, I can't tell if you're kidding here. As such, allow me to say: no offense intended. All joking, not meant as any kind of actual burn. I have great love for you, 'blix. Would not mean to actually offend you in any way.
toblix Posted February 2, 2010 Apology... NOT ACCEPTED I'm only kidding. Don't worry about it, you'll need to use tons more expletives to hurt me. For example, you would have to say something like: "AKA: Your stupid life," or "It is a fact that your life is fiction." Bonus knowledge: If you switch to courier, when you write it's like a robot talking.
