Did anyone else track down the Keller tapes to get into the National Guard bunker and pick up the Experimental MIRV?

It's a Fat Man that launches 8 nukes simultaneously

Did you have all of the Keller family tapes? (They're pretty easy to find if you've explored a lot of the map then consult a walkthrough).

If so, you may have to listen to them before it will let you open the door. 2 - 5 each have one digit of the combination, which I listened for and wrote down, but it let me open the door without having to tap it in.

It wouldn't let me enter any code, pressing action didn't do anything. I had this a couple of times with computer consoles. The console would open, and then... nothing.

Anyway, I thought the mini-nuke sucked big time.

Just finished this, and I gotta say: having played through it, it was right about what I expected all along. It was a sweet game, but it shouldn't have been a Fallout game.

Most impressed by:

  • Loading and saving this game was fucking fast. Have the technical details of how they managed this amazing feat been revealed somewhere?
  • The world of FO3 was huge and filled with amazing shit.

Disappointed by:

  • With so much fucking combat, they should've made it less boring.
  • VATS should've been super snappy and not take as long to start up as the game itself.
  • So many fucking subway stations.
  • Getting around in the down town area was a bitch. This should've been made simpler.

I've finally gotten around to playing, was advised not to complete the main story too fast so that's on hold whilst I explore.

I have to say it's a lot better than I was expecting, I'm really impressed by this game and really enjoying sinking a ton of time into it.

I quite like VATS, there's nothing more satisfying for me currently than critting someone from sneak with my flaming sword and watching them fly backwards on fire whilst all their limbs explode. Then eating the corpse.

Being evil is a good laugh, my character is a right bitch. She goes around in the AntAgoniser's costume at the moment and I have my crazy slave girl who is insane and also my lover. She gets a flaming sword too.

I went home for lunch and downloaded the Point Lookout DLC. Can't wait to fire it up tonight. It looks incredibly creepy.

At least you'll be able to get them cheaper.

Get this... So I finally have a chance to fire this bitch up and 5 minutes in, my 360 RRODs. This is the 3rd fucking time this box has gone kaput, and since I had it fixed locally, the warranty is no good. Fuck this, I'm gonna trade a bunch of shit in and get a Jasper arcade unit tonight. Fucking msoft!!!

I really wish V.A.T.S had proper targeting for melee weapons, even though I'd probably treat it just like firearm combat (head, head, head, head, attack) it would be nice to have the option of disarming a supermutant with a slice to the arm and then following that up with a killing blow to the FACE.

Any suggestions for a new playthrough? I've beaten the vanilla game on a friend's 360 using an explosives/small arms character and now that I have a copy of the game myself, I'd like to switch it up a bit. Is a smart/stealthy melee character feasible?

How does the dlc factor into things? It's a little overwhelming and I'm not sure if I should get everything from the start, or wait and get everything after completing the main questline, or some crazy combination of the two.

Although many people didn't love the content (it's more shooter than RPG feeling) - Operation Anchorage rewards you with the Chinese Stealth Suit, the Gauss Rifle, and Jigwei's Shocksword - which are ideal for a stealth/sniper build. It makes the game a lot easier on Normal though (which suits me fine), but there's always Hard if it's too namby-pamby difficulty-wise. I think all the DLC is worthwhile, but I'll take all the Fallout 3 I can get. If I'd had a working PC before it came out - I'd be playing the shit out of those mods. As it stands - I've invested enough $$ in the game & DLC to stick w/ the 360 version.

OA sounds pretty cool, thanks for that. I'm going to play on Hard this time around and I'm even considering placing some strict boundaries on my playstyle in order to give myself more of an "authentic" challenge. (For example - no fast traveling, which would place a lot more importance on strategy and planning ahead instead of jumping all over the map and ending up as a demigod with a million guns like my first game).

I'm wondering less about which DLC to get (I plan on getting them all :gaming:) and more about when to get them. Like, Broken Steel I think changes the endgame, so should I get that before heading to the final climactic battle? Or is there stuff that I can access at any point in the game? There's so many options now like with Point Lookout, I don't know anything about what it contains, I'm just curious as to whether or not I should start a new game with it installed.

I wouldn't worry about Broken Steel until a) you are about to reach level 20 (to raise the level cap and add perks) or B) you are getting close to the ending of the normal game (this is essential). The others can happen whenever, and as such can integrate into the overall game experience pretty seamlessly. You're aware that they're available, but not required to pursue them in any order.

I can't imagine not fast traveling - the world is fucking huge.

Not really. It's nothing compared to the smallest of the last 3 TES games (i.e. Oblivion; I don't know Arena).

I wonder if they're ever going to release the rest on DVD. I'm not really that much interested in Operation: Anchorage and The Pitt right now. Broken Steel is quite important to me in order to _continue_ playing.

Very good, thanks for the heads up, I'll probably start playing today...

Indeed the world is pretty big, but I'm doing it for IMMERSION, you just don't understand my superior method of playing.

In the name of IMMERSION I decided to escort

Dad

from the West side of the map to the East side. Well, I tried to. About 2/3 of the way, I told him to hide behind a car while I took care of some raiders. When I came back, one of his hands somehow got a y-value of infinity. He had one arm stretching to the sky while his body bounced around and convulsed like a demented marionette. Even if you don't pay any attention the man behind the curtain, he's bound to slip up the longer you talk to the giant, floating head. That's immersion for ya.

Well then walk walk walk away my friend. You have my blessing.

I did, because walking around the quite empty waste land was much much more fun that messing around with the metro maze.

Well I definitely have to agree with that. If the maps were better, the subway tunnels wouldn't be so frustrating and un-fun. Even exploring vaults can get tedious. I really hope New Vegas addresses the map thing, it's the only thing I strongly dislike about the game.

...

Point Lookout is pretty awesome so far. I'm only about an hour into it but the area is pretty cool & the redneck mutants are creepy as hell. I wish there were more variations on them (I've seen 2 types so far - the same two seen in previews).

You meet a character in the mansion that is easily my favorite character in all of Fallout 3.

My main regret so far is going for Bloody Mess. I held off for ages, but decided to give it a try. Shooting a guy's head off with a hunting rifle is satisfying enough; if his limbs inexplicably detach themselves, it kind of leaves the domain of cool and enters the land of the ridiculous. I guess that'll serve me right for thinking bloody violence is cool in the first place.

Wow, I think Point Lookout is my favorite of the DLC so far. It's expansive and spooky, with lots of little things to find and a good variety of optional side missions. Plus, Desmond is one cool ass motherf'ing ghoul.
