Offering porn for capcha solving is one way, and throwing increasing amounts of processor power at being able to read them with software is increasingly another. I've come across captchas that are too hard for most humans to read, and if that's what's required now, the concept is obviously fucked. On a more serious note, is it possible with this forum install to block people from posting links until they hit a post threshold? Yes, that's been implemented at the Black Cat Forums (the mod team, not the torrent site - a lot of newbies sign up asking for warez...), so that the first five posts of a user can't contain links. I think that'll either be a third party plugin, or a modification authored by the admin over there (He's pretty techy). Seconded on leaving the links too. Banning does nothing to discourage the spammers, because leaving the posts/links up actually gives them google juice, encouraging them to come back, sign up again, and post more.
