Adventure Gamers...

Recommended Posts

I've only been stopping by and glancing through the forums over at Adventure Gamers at the most every two weeks or so... So, I have no idea what's going on, and I was afraid to ask there. What's up? Why are half the threads being locked, and filters, reputation points, and who knows what else being added? Did things get really dirty there or something?

Fark... hit edit instead of quote, sorry.

Excuse me, half the threads? Evan locked the Vampyre story after it turned into a Dimi-vs-the-world flame thread, and that's pretty much been it. You're making it sound like we're turning the forums into some sort of overcontrolled hellhole bent on crushing free speech, and I kind of take offense at that.

Sorry, like I said, I haven't been around much lately. Usually when I go there's around 7 pages worth of threads in the 'new posts' thingy. When I went there today I don't think I saw any closed threads, but last time I went there was at least one closed thread listed on every page. So, yeah, I was exaggerating either way, but it's still a lot more than there used to be. I remember when I first joined (only about a year and a half to two years ago) that I didn't even see a closed thread until maybe a half a year after hanging around there. Again, I'm not trying to be offensive. I'm just curious as to what brought about the change.

There's about three things I can remember that happened recently:

- Kingz complained about the word fuck being filtered, followed by his trademark tirade

- A casino spam thread was started. The URL was edited out by fov but the thread was left alive just to make fun of it.

- The Vampyre thread spun out of control when it became more about The Inventory than about Vampyre. The thread was locked.

Just another week at the AG forum. It hasn't turned into a police state, as you're implying. :partyhat:

What's casino spam?

Erm spam about online casinos.

Just as you have mortage spam and xtra size is better spam.

I'm just curious as to what brought about the change.
If you think there's any chances I think you should write a PM to the moderators fov, trep or voodoofx.

It's ok. I was just curious. I think I came off wrong, and implied more than I meant to. My apologies. I will shut up now. :innocent:

[edit]Do we not have a frying pan? Bummer.

See, I'm not the only one who is bothered by the MARTIAL LAW that is happening over there.

Marek, you forgot to mention the huge orgy involving several rhesus monkeys, a rather nicely endowed pro wrestler, and a repenting soccer mom. I wasn't around for that one, but I heard a certain passive/aggressive former staffer kept looking around for an old woman to fornicate and he ended up PMing random forum members about the lack of hot middle aged females who get off on DOS based adventures.

Oh, and a certain jest kept shooting his potty mouth, and an eighteen wheeler suddenly showed up delivering six months' worth of cheese.

Other than that, be happy your virgin eyes were spared, Moos. No cats were injured during the broohaha.

Dang, I need to come around more often. Gotta stand up for cats' rights and all.

For the record, the reson I'm not around there as much anymore is because I'm all adventure game discussed out. Feels like I've discussed every aspect of the things at least three times now, and so I thought I'd take a break for a while.

A perfectly good reason, my boy. I, on the other hand, have news updating and moderator responsibilities, so I have to be there.

Still, my life has shifted again, and now that I'm living with my sister and her family, I have access to certain things I hadn't thought about before, like cable t.v., dvd movies, and Xbox. I never watch t.v., their library of dvd's consists primarily of gory horror, action, and kiddie movies (which I don't care for), and I'm just mildly getting into the Xbox titles LOTR: The Fellowship Of The Ring and Pirates Of The Caribbean.

Suburban life. Whatever.... :D

Not much yet to report on my part. It's summer, I've moved for a better chance at taking care of myself, I'm not working atm, and I will finally start writing that novel I've had in my head for years, which I'm most excited about. My sister and bro-in-law want me to go to Europe with them for a month (they leave in 3 weeks) but I'm not in the mood to. I want to start that novel.

Unfortunately, they have very few Xbox titles. They're mostly racing games. Project Gotham Racing is rather fun playing with my little nephew, but I never really got into arcade games. The Star Wars: Clone Wars game is okay, but I never got into Star Wars crap, either. That Tao Feng beat-em-up game is fooking boring, those kinds of game bore me to death. My bro-in-law wants to get Manhunter. I'll keeping pimping to him to get, otherwise I'll just get it for PC for myself.

Half the time I currently spend scolding my sister and brolaw for being too moronic to educate themselves about spam, pop-up ads, and adware. Their relatively new computer is really screwed up, and I had to d/l some some stuff to block out stuff. If you ask me, it's ignorant people who spread all these viruses around, you really do need to educate yourself about taking precautions.

Cool. You're working on The Curves of Danger too, right? Have you been to Europe before?

I haven't been up to much either. Almost all of my friends went back to America or on a missions trip to Brazil this summer, so I've been mostly hanging out here at my house. Been doing some weightlifting, working on learning C++, watching movies, and other exciting things like that. Finally, on my senior year so I'm quite excited. One more year till I'm off on my own!

Completely unrelated, I just gave myself a sig, but for some reason it isn't showing up. Anyone know why?

[edit]Never mind, apparently it one shows up on new posts.

We are still working on Curves, but currently it's kind of disjointed. James went to Italy for a couple weeks and left me in charge, but my computer got screwed up (adware crap - go figure!) and I'll be upgrading to XP from ME in a couple weeks, so until then my OS is AWOL, and I can't get any of my files. The Curves demo will be a little late, I'm afraid. I'm using my sister's computer for the time being, which is okay, 'cause I got to play the Thief: Ugly Shadows demo (which doesn't support ME).

I had studied in London for a summer back when I was in art college. I've also been to Paris, Florence, and Rome. I told my sister I could go with them to Europe perhaps next year. They keep a little Volvo in Germany and they use it for driving trips from country to country. But what I really want to do is go to Amsterdam for a couple weeks with my diary and a digital camera and sit at cafe all afternoon and write. If I'm lucky, Screwtape will meet me there and we can eat space cake and bitch about things.

I'd really want to learn some programming skills to make little games. How hard is it? I have some excellent ideas for some little adventure games.

I have no idea what it takes to program games, but learning programming itself isn't that difficult. There are plenty of excellent books out there, and lots of good stuff on the Internet. I'm not sure how good they are, but I know you can download Thinking in Java and Thinking in C++ for free from the author's website. He claims that they're really good. I'm probably going to try to go through his Thinking in Jave sometime this year in an attempt to get ready for the AP Computer Science exam. I don't much care for Java though. Oh, how I wish they haden't just switched it from C++. :frown:

I can't stand those n00bs at AG. They're freaky. :sombrero: When Moosferatu was a newbie he wasn't nearly as freaky... I probably was rather freaky when I joined.

Anyway, I have never liked the get-a-book method of learning to program. I like to learn as I go and not do any kinds of excercises, mostly because I think it's an uncreative way. Of course, it MIGHT be easier and more consistent. And I can't muster the motivation to learn something just for the learning's sake, there must be a reason for me to do it, like wanting to actually program an application.

When getting into a new programming language, I study the very basics and then just look at the help file when I need to know new stuff. Microsoft Visual C++ has an excellent help file with lots of examples. C++ isn't difficult, but getting the hang of DirectX, MFC & other stuff is. I once started with C++ but then gave up. Now I have some new ideas again...

So it's a good thing there are engines like Wintermute and AGS. AGS especially is easy to get into, I'd suggest you try that, Trep. You can go far with it without any programming knowledge at all. You will need programming at some point, but no worries, AGS has a great programming tutorial. :yep:

Love the avatar, deadworm.

This is SO typical. Whatever I say, people always reply with "nice avatar". Once I posted some music of mine to a website where usually each thread got at least five replies. The only result was that one person PMmed me and asked: "Hey, your avatar is cool, where did you get it?"

Anyway, I chose the avatar, because I like cats.

(You can understand that in two ways as well. Hehee. Hahaa.)

What? You mean trep wasn't talking about cats? :innocent:

Also, how'd you get a custom title? Do you work here now too? Can someone post a list of who all's on the Idle Thumbs's staff? Or maybe it would be easier if you posted a list of who isn't on staff.

Trep you should probably just get AGS... Though I suck and haven't used it to make a game yet, I've generally heard that once you get over the rather steep initial learning curve you can do at least the simpler adventure game type stuff without having to program things.
