Wrestlevania Posted September 13, 2007 What's bothering me is the dawning realisation that both titles will easily come in at the 800 point mark each. I've 200 in the bank, left over from when I bought Streets of Rage II and Space Giraffe earlier this month, but I'll still have to buy more than the wallet-friendly 1,000 point chunk I got last time. Fuck. This points thing is properly shit.
Wrestlevania Posted September 13, 2007 Do you somehow benefit from locking the targets "in tune" (or in correct order) or does it just sound crap if you don't? Are there real long time effects? For instance, does the music sound horribly cacophonous in the end if you have played the level poorly? And so on.. Simple answer: no. When you destroy a target, it adds a bit of percussion to the music. Hitting stuff in time just gives you musical satisfaction, but has no overall impact on the pacing--except for clearing a section and moving onto the next. Each section of a level progresses the music, and transitions from one section to the next are beat-matched automatically by the game engine. So even if you complete a section mid-beat or 'phrase', the music transitions smoothly.
miffy495 Posted September 13, 2007 The real feedback comes from the controller though. It's all about that extra level of immersion. Only game I've played that makes the music tangible.
Wrestlevania Posted September 13, 2007 Good point - and I meant to say earlier that there's rumble in the pad already, so no need for that crotch block that "came" with the original in Japan.

Well, being perfectly in time will also give you a perfect score. And the higher your score gets the more the game "evolves".
toblix Posted September 13, 2007 This is coming your way cunt. Sure, still the voice of the oppressed. I guess I should've phrased myself differently, although there's now way of knowing that now. What I meant was... well, I guess I meant what I wrote. So maybe writing it was the problem. Yeah, I can see that. I'll control my hate for games in the future. Sorry.Anyway, I've noticed there's a bunch of these low-fidelity bizarre arcade games coming out now, and I'm really surprised that there's any market for them at all. Of all the games I would imagine 99% of all gamers in the world skipping after just looking at a screenshot of for one thousandth of a second, these games... Rez, Space Giraffe... I'm certain there are more of them (before I forget, there's a nasty bug in the text editor when you press down on the last line, and the caret appears at the beginning of the line)... and I imagine you must be really old-school hardcore to even try them. Is it just the low risk of publishing something on Live Arcade, or are there a bunch of old-schoolers buying these things? Also, I believe I expressed my horniness -- however tersely -- for World of Goo just earlier today. Unless that sounded like bitter rage, which I assure you it wasn't. Salka Posted September 13, 2007 I can't believe the blatant abuse of power that's going on in this thread, I would never dream of behaving in such a way. ... ( ¬¬ )
Ben Posted September 13, 2007 ...I guess I meant what I wrote... Well done for immediately making redundent all the other stuff you wrote. Ok look, here's the deal (as it seems it escaped you in spite of my warning at the start of the thread): I DO realise and accept that some people don't get or enjoy Rez. I'm not debating that here. Which is exactly my point - this is not the thread in which to debate whether Rez is good or not, or what about it is so unfathomably bad, or to discuss the business plan for XBLA and its potential market. This is a thread for people happy about the announcement because they love Rez (and Ikaruga). It is a love-in thread. You don't like or get Rez? Fine, start another thread and express it there. There is no reason for you to do it in this thread - it amounts to trolling and that, jokes aside, is a genuine banning offence on some other forums. Luckily for you we take things less seriously and/or efficiently here so it'll slide. Anyway - back to Rez and Ikaruga love... Only game I've played that makes the music tangible. QFT. I'm a great believer in the power of music and how it has a very special and sub-concious affect on any kind of experience (be it passive or interactive). Rez is one of the few examples in the Video game medium that manages to express this to the player through a perfect synchronisation of game play (which is on-rails, simplistic and rhythm-based) and music. It's about more than just the wire-frame graphics, the music, the game length etc; but rather about the whole these components form. Do this: 1) Get the game; 2) Turn off the lights; 3) Make her open the box; 4) Put on headphones (or make sure you have an awesome sound system); 5) Play the game for more than 15 minutes. DanJW Posted September 13, 2007 Well, Toblix can't really comment on Rez until he's tried it. Try it. Go on. toblix Posted September 13, 2007 PS - Just to give everyone fair warning: anyone that says anything negative about Rez in this thread will be perma-banned. Jeez, I thought you were kidding, like pretending to be a totalitarian fascist or something?Anyway, in honor of not getting permabanned (although that would be pretty cool, too) I'm going to buy it, turn down the lights and play it for more than 15 minutes. Then (I'm not done), I'm going to tell you all what I thought. Like a proper reviewer, only without going to game expos and calculating the game's qualities with an accuracy of within .1 quality point. And I really did think you were kidding. Now I'm actually looking forward to this game. When is it out?
Ben Posted September 13, 2007 I was kidding - otherwise you would be banned right now. It's just slated for Q1 2008 at the moment.

miffy495 Posted September 14, 2007 Actually, given that I came in to this thread after toblix's comment had been edited out, I'm now very curious as to what he said. Surely a thread would get rather boring quickly if there were no conflict? Interupting the love-in aside, (and I believe I've already placed myself on the side of "love" here) what was said that so offended you, Ben?
Ben Posted September 14, 2007 Oh for christ's sake... I am not dignifying Toblix's stupidity with a further serious response. I think i've already explained myself adequately. Please move on.
