Sci-fi renaissance or Xbox rut?

Recommended Posts

...and the 360's first high-class B-movie Sci-Fi game has arrived!

Picked up Earth Defense Force 2017 as it's budget priced and looked like fun. It's exactly what you'd expect from a game that has a guy firing a machine gun into a giant robot's crotch on the back of the box. Mindless, dumb, ridiculous, pretty damned fun. Lotsa pretty explosions, lotsa giant robots/insects/lazer-dinosaurs/what-have-you. When the shit starts blowing up real good, the game does start to slow down a bit though. Still, for $40 Canadian, well worth the mindless explosions and chaos. Also, you can blow up buildings with a single shot from a rocket launcher. Great as Crackdown is, the fact that the buildings are impervious kinda bugs me. This makes up for it.

NOT A GREAT GAME. I repeat: NOT A GREAT GAME. Still, budget priced and bat-shit crazy. I have the feeling that this one will end up as one of those guilty pleasure sort of cult classics. A "Remember EDF2017?" "Heh, yeah. That game was shit. Fun though." "Wanna bust it out for a quick go-round?" "Why the hell not?" type of game for the ages. If you've got $40, a 360, and some time to kill there are far worse ways to spend it.
