vimes Posted January 25, 2007 1 - Phil Harrison, the man that sold a soul he apparently only rented is going to enlighten the developing community about Game 3.0, the third era of gaming, the one with the 'always on' paradigm. See people rationnalizing what is obviously an armed kidnapping of an otherwise awesome event 2 - Boring or repetitive games on the PC tend to be short and so , you tought you were safe from boring, repetitive as well as never ending games on the PC. Not anymore : Square Enix apparently acquired an Unreal Engine 3 licence and intends to product some *things* for the PC. Oh my.
Marek Posted January 25, 2007 1. Phil Harisson is a good kid who hooked up with the wrong crowd. I mean, err, he's probably the only executive at the PS3 camp who I currently respect, so I don't mind he's doing a keynote, and I'm sure it will have a few couple of interesting tidbits. I won't be sitting in the audience, though. 2. That news says pretty much nothing. More games use the Unreal engine than you might think. Much more. Even games that are absolutely nothing like an FPS. It's just a tool.
MeesChees Posted January 26, 2007 So is Phil Harrison! Well, I don't really think that, but aren't crude puns quite popular on this site? Also, won't these always-on consoles do some damage to the environment if you lump it all together? The government's been telling us not to leave things on standby to save energy/the environment/money. Will Sony donate some money to charity or something? I don't really know what I'm talking about, so feel free to put me right.

eljay Posted January 26, 2007 I want to catch the mild bus. Also I am totally disinterested in Phil Harrison's talk, with it's long and buzzwordy name.
MrChlorophyll Posted January 26, 2007 Held its bum. Maybe the site didn't orgasm like it says on the front page, but instead just clentched its buttocks until it could hold the streams of news and information in its bowels no longer. Mmm... Yeah. Let's stick with "The site just orgasmed."

I don't know if it's consuming more energy than a TV in idle mode ... so the company would argue that's not different from before. Plus, even if they are pubicizing the 'always on' mode, I guess they could say it's up to the consumer to unplug it. I guess they should pay, but I imagine they're tons of ways to get around it. I know that nowadays in France, the final customer pays an eco-tax on the product; but that only seems to take in account the nature of the electrical components used and how hard it is to recycle them... not the energy consumption. But it would make sense that someone pay, even if it's the consumer. eljay Posted January 26, 2007 I believe this generation of consoles do consume a good deal more power than a TV in standby as they (I think they all do) remain connected to the internet and wireless is quite power hungry, also they have their receivers always looking out for the "Switch On" command from wireless controllers. Wrestlevania Posted January 26, 2007 Console power consumption seemed to be big news middle of last year. There was also a pending change to Euro energy laws concerning consumer electronics' standby power consumption, which was levelled at Nintendo after they announced their "always on" connectivity. As I recall, it turned out that the Wii came in just a fraction under the maximum allowed wattage consumption, so Nintendo didn't get fined/taxed.

There are no words. You are now one of my heroes. I can now say I'm a crutde pun on helditsbum.net While the 360 does spend it's down time in standby mode, I don't believe it connects to the internet until you turn it on. At least, the wireless reciever I have on the back of mine stays inactive until then. The Wii, yeah, always online. Can't say for the PS3. They're all "always on" in a sense, but not necessarily online.
