emnii Posted August 14, 2005 So Geist is finally being released this week. Has anyone played this? I was looking forward to it back in my retail days (about a year and a half ago) and now it's actually going to see the light of day. Is it still a mature first-person game from Nintendo? Also, where's the hype on this one? A first-party Nintendo title and I know next to nothing about it less than a week before its release. Is this a good or bad thing? Mr Flibble Posted August 14, 2005 Geist is coming out? Woooo! Possessing a dog bowl to frighten a dog? I'm there! Possession in general actually. Neat idea.
Chris Posted August 14, 2005 It's not really "from Nintendo", it's from N-Space. It's exclusive to GameCube though. Based on what I've played so far, this game could really go either way. The controls could be better and it looks like it might not be polished to a desirable degree, but its unique properities might make up for it.
emnii Posted August 14, 2005 I just checked out N-Space's previous games and I can't exactly say I'm thrilled. http://www.n-space.com/games.html But I haven't played any of these games and Geist is quite a departure from the majority of them. I MUST MAINTAIN HOPE.
Mr Flibble Posted August 14, 2005 Just because they make kids games doesn't mean that Geist will be rubbish.
Chris Posted August 14, 2005 It's not so much that they make kids games as much as that those games really aren't that great. They've made several non-kids games as well, and they weren't quite classics either.
SiN Posted August 14, 2005 I also find it quite odd that this game hasn't really gotten any hype. hope it'll turn out good, as it seems like a neat enough concept. SiN
jokemaster Posted August 15, 2005 Just because they make kids games doesn't mean that Geist will be rubbish. Kids games, like say: Duke Nukem: Land of the Babes (2000)
Mr Flibble Posted August 15, 2005 Educational that one. I watched a few movies of Geist on GameSpot, and it looks like after the first ten minutes its going to be repeating itself an awful lot. And the graphics were quite...Hmm. Quake64 anyone?
miffy495 Posted August 15, 2005 Yeah, I was actually really looking forward to it at first, but the more I hear the less I care. It now comes down to the reviews. Especially one from here, if it ever happens...

Roderick Posted August 17, 2005 Manny, I've seen those disturbing puppets before, but I never knew what the hell they were from. Tell me!

emnii Posted August 19, 2005 Okay I'm a sucker and impulsive so I picked this up yesterday and I started tonight after I finished God of War. I got up to the second boss (even though the first "boss" was hardly a challenge) and died. I thought I'd post some impressions. The graphics are kind of weak. This is no Metroid Prime 2. They're not offensive, they're just not as slick as most GC exclusive titles. There's a noticable lack of music at points and there's also a lack of voiceovers. This isn't necessarily a bad thing because the voices that ARE in the game suck. On the plus side the possession mechanic is fun. Not that I've done a whole lot of possessing (I'm only an hour in at most) but it's neat how every object has it's own perspective. And there's a scene at the beginning after you've been uh de-bodied where you're in some sort of dreamworld ghost tutorial where a calm voice is telling you things like "Isn't this nice? You're safe here. This is home now." and after it teaches you about draining plants for health and you possess a rabbit (complete with color-blind vision and "hop" button), the dreamworld starts breaking down and the same calm voice that guided you is distorting and repeating "Kill them. Kill them all." That scene really grabbed me. So after an hour do I feel screwed out of my $50? Not really. I've hardly played it and I'm enjoying myself so far. Plus I'm being deployed to Iraq soon and no one is bringing their gamecube so I'm going to enjoy it while I'm still in the states and hope I can finish the game before I leave. TL;DR: Possession, the potential I've seen so far (namely the simulation scene) $50 is $50. That's like my whole allowance for one week. Graphics are kind of weak. Bad voiceovers. Where's the music?
