General Fuzzy McBitty Posted April 17, 2005 I can't play games with no plot anymore. It doesn't make it worth it. How hard would it be to add some dialogue and maybe one other person to dialogue with... and some cut scenes? You can only play the same game so many times before updated graphics get old. You really don't need any plot for a good multiplayer frag fest.

Dingo Chavez Posted April 17, 2005 I'm fine with games that don't have a plot, hell, I love 'em. A great example is any Super Mario game (maybe not Super Mario Land, I never cared for exploding Koopa's), in each one Peach gets kidnapped by Bowser and Mario comes to the rescue, now what makes Mario so much better than anything else is the fact that the gameplay is always astute, light and amusing, the artstyle is always odd, funny and purely entertaining, and the game doesn't under any circumstances take itself too seriously. A good example for an overzealous story is Final Fantasy X or any other Final Fantasy. Sin is Tidus's father transform, at this point of the game I asked myself: why are they always trying to imitate Star Wars with a frivolous and redundant soap-oprah plot twist (which in my opinon, never worked for Star Wars, but what do I know according to the world Lucas is a bloody genius), in VIII Squall turned out to be Laguna's son, in IX Zidane is Kuja's brother, and I could also mention IV, V, VI, and VII but I won't. Don't get me wrong I love Final Fantasy VIII, IX, and X, but those type of plot twists don't work, and if they think that they do they're fooling themselves. Also Metal Gear is a fine example, but that's another book. Zelda Ocarina of Time, and Wind Waker are good examples of a stories that could be Star Wars-esque but thankfully refuse to do so. Imagine if a twist will occur with this shocking revelation: Link is Ganondorf's bastard child in a love affair with an Hylia women. Instead of choosing a predictable path in story telling Nintendo makes the plot simpler, and fill the game with humorous charactes and witty dialogue (especially The Wind Waker). I love a good story in a game, probably more than most people, but this type of stereotypical writing just boils my egg in a wrong way. Good game story telling most definitely exist, they're rare but they exist. Grim Fandango is probably the best example, Bulder's Gate 2 is another, and what about slightly forgotten games like Eternal Darkness and Soul River, and the Monkey Island series is the holy grail of witty game dialogue. Well, enough with this unneeded and verbose post. I just needed to write it, I apoplogize for any emotion scarring you may have received form this post. Mr. T: I was the original actor that played the role of Darth Vader, but that damn Lucas fired me because I insisted to end every line with the word "fool". But I have no regrets, fool!
