You rubes! You maroons! -
Warning: Slightly hilarious/rude.

It's just cumbersome that it opens it at the start of each turn and closes it at the end of each. It's just annoying, it doesn't really matter to gameplay.

Well, for 5 bucks you have the ability to create the lineage of Charles Von Hapsbutts, ruler of Austria with 40 intrigue and 10 in every other stat and just stab Europe to death.

There's a WoT I Think and a "live review" over on Rock Paper Shotgun. From my time in beta I would recommend against it.

Caeser 3, Pharaoh and Zeus are pretty much all the same game with different flavors of culture, buildings and a few other changes. Military is miles better in Zeus however. How religion works, for instance. Caeser III is, I would say, the premier Impressions game, yes, but if you like it and beat it, give the others a shot. Endless Space is what MOO3 should have been. If that's not a good enough recommendation I don't know what to tell you.

Impressions city builders are basically the height of city building games (Anno is nice but Impressions is probably still better). They go in this order, in terms of release: Caeser III -> Pharaoh -> Zeus -> Emperor The problem with this is that while Caeser III is sort of a pillar of city building design, a couple of the ways it works mean that Zeus and Emperor are better games for actually playing. See, Impressions city builders use a worker system that draws from the available population of the right class of people to do things like haul goods, work the industries and all that. Caeser works in such a way that these people are often taken from across the city, increasing material flow times significantly. Zeus and Emperor (Pharaoh runs off the same systems at Caeser) take people from the nearest available housing structure, meaning it's often beneficial to have housing complexes for each industry complex. Basically what I'm getting at is that if you want to play great city builders, they're all great, but Zeus (Emperor isn't on GOG yet but probably will be soon) is a much easier game to deal with. Also never build a fire station until you have a fire.

I just can't get enough of this.

Sword of the Stars II is in alpha, currently, despite being a released game. Wait a couple years and it might be worth playing. -
Haaahahahaha, Kugu.

So was movies made with dogs in costume with dubbed human voices a big thing for a while? Because I know of at least two such movies and more than one has to be by design. Though I wouldn't call it intelligent...

EU3 isn't particularly complex, but avoid Vicky like the plague.

I finally figured out how I wanted to play Wisp and generally how to play him really. Match ID is 23584955, though I'm not sure it's all worth watching. I think I do a decent job of it though, and I look forward to playing more Wisp. -
Well, let me put it this way, pre-SoI, CK2+ allowed the play of Muslim rulers, but it was just Christian play in Abyssinia, more or less. Let me quote something at you to give you an idea. It's a very different experience than sitting around in Holland for forty years waiting for all your claimants to come of age and waiting for your plot to go through. They've said they're going to have 4 things similar to Sword of Islam for CK2, each focusing on a different area of gameplay. Republics becoming playable is a decent bet, as well as pagans. I'd say for $10 it's worth looking into.

An incredibly enjoyable read, and a fantastic tutorial for EU3 can be found here. http://lparchive.org/Europa-Universalis-III-Divine-Wind/ -
It's not particularly taxing, though there seems to be a common issue where CK2 makes graphics cards run pretty hot. As for CK2+, Wiz has been talking about messing with the decadence system to make it more of a stop gap, if you have Sword of Islam already. Which is pretty great, honestly, it's a real change of pace from some Irish count or a Bohemian duke. So yes, I am still playing it.

Civ doesn't exactly have a definitive end point, but you begin to lose points the farther you go past 2000AD, I think. The time compression goes from a century a turn in early BC to a couple years a turn by 1850 AD. -

A note on the Total War series, the time limits actually don't matter, the game will continue past the end date if you haven't won by then. Don't feel constrained by time when you're learning the games. Though if you're not playing Total War so you can direct huge battle scenes I don't know what to tell you. If you want a 4X game that's all about high-level management where the combat just involves right-clicking and coming back a few minutes later, I cannot recommend Distant Worlds enough. I'd also thoroughly recommend bumping the Civ difficulty up to Prince, which is the final level where the AI doesn't get happiness bonuses/omnipotence and so forth. I'd also recommend getting Gods and Kings when it goes on sale (or now!) because while it doesn't deter the Civ 5 AI from being schizophrenic, it does massively improve their tactical level thinking. Outside Civ 5, Total War and Distant Worlds, I would strongly recommend the Paradox line of grand strategy. I won't sugar coat it, they're crazy, complex games that quite frequently make absolutely no sense, but there's no better set of games for becoming the Sunni Emperor of Sweden. Start with Europa Universalis 3 (CHRONICLES, not Complete. Stupid marketing.) and if that doesn't strike your fancy try Crusader Kings. Europa is very much a government level game where you're the (nearly) faceless head of whatever nation you're running. Crusader Kings on the other hand is all about managing interpersonal relations with hundreds of characters across medieval Europe. -
True enough. I think a good way to describe EVE is that if you're not running another program at the same time as about 90% of your EVE time played, you are slowly killing yourself.
