  1. Movie/TV recommendations

    Oh my god yes.
  2. I was told by someone who knows more than me about this stuff that Valve originally wanted to run all the Majors on their own. But ESL complained, because they'd been doing big-ish tournaments for a while and were worried Valve would eat into their cut, basically. Valve relented and let them do it. And then they left Perfect World do it in China. So, the blame isn't ENTIRELY Valve's, here. Not to say they're innocent. I agree what Gabe did was unprofessional... even if I do look at it and actually laugh at how ridiculously blunt it is. I also think they should've done a better job of working with Perfect World to ensure they wouldn't fuck things up. But, basically, Perfect World is the team running this shitshow, right. Could Valve really have known how this was going to go down ahead of time? The International has been consistently run with higher and higher production values every year, with the only real problems being stuff like DDoS attacks and occasional technical hiccups, which isn't TOO surprising when so many different electronic pieces have to be connected perfectly. IMO, if Valve had been in full control of the Shanghai Major, it would've been better. (Even if the first part of my post isn't true, I'd say the second part still holds weight.)
  3. James used the word "cunt" on day one, made jokes about masturbating, etc. My guess is the reason people had to fight for him to come back at Valve is because other people felt he was too crude. When he did come back, he was even more crass than usual on the first day. He was told to tone it down on the following day. Then, on the following day, he made a straight up homophobic joke about two Dota "celebrities" (friends of his, but nonetheless inappropriate because gay jokes are not okay), and dunked on Envy pretty hard. I don't like Envy, but yo. So he got fired. And then in his 17 page explanation (hahhaaha) he threw Sheever under the bus, admitted that he hadn't been keeping up with Dota and hadn't put in the time to catch up and learn all the new mechanics, the new meta, etc... I mean c'mon. I have historically liked James' hosting. I felt he was entertaining in a way that a lot of hosts just plain weren't. But he was not innocent in this debacle. Let's not act like he is! I also agree with sclpls re: Thorin and rlewis. They're both pretty damn toxic, rlewis physically assaulted a pro player AFTER intentionally antagonizing him into a confrontation... Plus rlewis writes for Breitbart, which, hoo boy, let's not even get into that. Okay that's out of the way. Carry on.
  4. No Man's Sky

I love removing code. It's one of the most satisfying things to do. Especially if it's my own code. Nothing feels better than cleaning up my own trash.
  5. No Man's Sky

    Wow. That's something special.
  6. No Man's Sky

I'll buy it. ...I just remembered there was supposed to be some sort of substantial preview soon. Or maybe it already happened. ...Someone tell me what it is I'm thinking of thanks.
  7. Automation: Where did all the jobs go?!

The concepts of public education and basic income and universal health care are all pulled from the same bucket...
  8. Automation: Where did all the jobs go?!

Are we now comparing a minimum income needed to live comfortably to "private luxury"? And you know what, so what if there are some bad apples? Why should we let them ruin the lives of good people? Why are we basing the worth of a concept on the worst people instead of the best people who NEED this change? Why are we pretending that because one person might abuse the system, another person doesn't deserve to live free of the stress and worry about surviving another week, another day?
  9. Automation: Where did all the jobs go?!

Well if that was true wouldn't lots of people be migrating to the more socialist countries where they don't have to worry about health care costs, etc.? Like why stay in America. We don't treat our people well, so everyone should be trying to leave for a better place! Although that said, is that really a huge problem if it does happen? More people means more economic growth as those people spend money and find their own jobs etc. EDIT: Oh, I see, you're saying they'd leave the country. Well, in that case I'll flip it around. If that was true, why aren't we seeing people moving en masse from the more socialist countries to places where they pay less in taxes?
  10. Automation: Where did all the jobs go?!

Yeah it's probably worth clarifying that basic income / guaranteed income / mincome is NOT free money for everyone. It's literally a minimum amount of money per X days (probably month? i dunno depends on implementation i suppose). So if you make OVER that minimum income, you don't get anything from the government. In fact, anything over that minimum gets taxed. If you make under, but still make money, you get enough to reach that minimum. Say the minimum is something easy like... 10. You make 9. Government gives you 1. You make 11. Government taxes the 1 (say, 50% or something, leaving you with 10.5). In this system, generally, the more money you make over the minimum, the more you get taxed, obviously. Those taxes (plus decreased spending elsewhere, shifting of spending from welfare, other now-defunct programs, etc.) pay for the basic income for everyone who doesn't make enough. There might be some people who abuse the system, but I'm fairly certain there are a significant number of studies that show that people who live in comfort and don't have to worry about their daily paycheck will be much more inspired to go work, and they'll be much more happy about it. And work doesn't just mean something that pays a wage. In Spenny's example, work includes child-rearing, pursuing education, etc. Okay that's the basics. Someone more educated than me can fill in any blanks or correct me if I made a mistake!
  11. Automation: Where did all the jobs go?!

Regardless of whether or not you believe a basic income for all is a good thing, the fact is that it will be a NECESSITY once automation becomes more and more prevalent. Where will these people work when all the basic jobs go away? They'll need some sort of education to move into different fields, but without a living wage, they can't get that education. Basic income gives them a way to live while learning, and then they can move into fields where automation is impossible (for now).
  12. Automation: Where did all the jobs go?!

Sorry, I didn't mean for the tone in my post to be accusatory, if it came off that way. I don't think Spenny did, either! Phew. Glad we got that sorted!
  13. Automation: Where did all the jobs go?!

I don't think anyone here said it was simple. But it will be a necessity eventually. So we need to start talking about it, especially because it's not going to be simple!
  14. Automation: Where did all the jobs go?!

There's a very hardcore libertarian at my office and I've been thinking about bringing up this topic because I'm curious how he'd suggest we solve it. (I already know he won't have a solution; he'll just suggest that if people lose their jobs and can't find another, it's their fault. It's scary how many people think like this, even if they aren't as passionate about it as he is.)
  15. Automation: Where did all the jobs go?!

Hah, no. That's nothing, that's just a joke. This is about the rise of automation that will remove millions and millions of jobs over the next few decades. See, for example, self-driving cars. What's going to happen when truck drivers, taxi drivers, lyft, uber drivers are all replaced by self-driving cars? Those people with those specific skills will not be needed anymore. They'll need to develop new skills. But which skills? They have to be careful not to devote time to learning a new job that will be replaced. Even the food service industry isn't safe. Especially fast food restaurants, where quality isn't really a big deal. Basically, watch that video Spenny posted. Yeah, I'm fortunately not in any danger. Not only am I a programmer, but I also work in game dev. Creative industries are (right now??) not in any great danger. But I worry for everyone else. ): Working less hours is a goal we should be striving for, but it's not really a solution to the problem of automation, you know? Unless you're proposing the hours you lose are given to someone else. But then they have to be trained for this new job they'll be doing. Which, in a lot of cases, will mean going to school, which costs money, which you need a job to pay for... It ain't lookin' good. Yeah, what worries me most is that nobody is talking about it. It's going to be a problem, and we need to be talking about it now, but most politicians only seem to give it the time of one vague "yeah it will be a problem" response. It's the second biggest problem we're facing, after climate change. I suppose, at least, climate change is getting more attention. I hope it's not too late for either issue.
  16. Automation: Where did all the jobs go?!

I'm not convinced it's going to happen quite so soon as to be stressing out about it in the immediate future, but it's definitely going to 'cause some shit to go down in the next couple decades. Never heard the word "mincome" before, but I always appreciate a nice portmanteau! EDIT: ... "It" being millions of people losing jobs in rapid succession as automation takes over more and more jobs.

YES! Bojack's intro is so fucking good.
  18. Yeah, I'm firmly in camp good riddance at this point. I've said multiple times and still stand by saying that I like him as a host. (Although I didn't pay attention so much to his hosting this major, and had I heard some of the things he said I probably would've reacted negatively.) But the last thing the Dota community needs is someone that gross being up front spewing shit. Now please fire Tobi, too. Don't let him come back. Also agreed Valve fucked this shit right up. I'm wondering, at this point, how long they can keep screwing up Dota stuff before people stay mad. I mean unforeseen technical difficulties are one thing, but, I dunno. We'll see. The future is bleak, and it's already here.
  19. The Happy Thread

Hooray happy things, everybody! This past week, I started a new project at work. The old one was wrapping up, and we had a new contract to fulfill, and we need to get it done fast. At first, I was really frustrated, because, yet again, it was a project I wasn't excited about at all. Made it really hard to get motivated. Especially when I had to learn this whole new codebase. Lots of work devoted to something you hate is always a bummer. But... then around the end of the day Thursday, after grinding away at stuff all week, something finally clicked and I really started getting into it. I even stayed late voluntarily to try to meet the deadline (which was yesterday, end of day). Turns out I actually still enjoy programming, provided I'm solving real problems! Previous project was just tedious tweaking of numbers, for the most part, but this one has me doing Cool Stuff. It's rad. That combined with a mini performance review thing where he had nothing but positive things to say about me means work is great!
  20. anime

I guess I have information you people don't have. Because he's definitely holding back. U: It's also worth noting that Saitama always says he's a hero for fun. (More specifically, he uses the word "hobby" a lot, but hobbies are supposed to be fun, so!) He doesn't do it for the glory. He (we can only assume) did have fun, in the beginning, before he gained this ultimate power. But once he did and he realized no one could challenge him anymore, he started getting really depressed. Once he stopped having fun as a hero, he realized how little else he had going for him. No companionship, no other hobbies, etc. It broke him down into what we see at the beginning of the series. (Okay, the second half of this paragraph is me filling in the blanks, there's no proof this is how it went down. But it makes perfect sense to me.) And part of this series is him discovering that he can have fun in other ways.

    Water under the bridge!
  22. Please tip your postmate

Well for what it's worth I'm pretty sure I agree with you about the core of your argument!! Tipping is garbage, and it's the fault of the employers and corporations. But I tip well precisely because I know that, and I try to tip cash as much as I can. I just think it's not cool to assume that because you've had an easy time finding cheap jobs that everyone else will have it easy, too. Especially given all the contrary evidence! That's all.

Again, that's not what happened. What happened is for some reason gerb decided to dig his heels in when people said it's not always easy to find a better job (let alone any job). Then, when provided with a personal experience by a fellow poster - someone who's been around here for a while! - he decided to question actions and assume details of the situation. THAT'S when this thread went to shit. It got weird, gross, and personal in the most uncomfortable way.
