  1. This is undoubtedly true for me, and I have definitely infected friends with it.
  2. Idle Workouts

I realise I didn't actually post my gym workout: Start with a 2k jog, increasing in pace until sprinting at the end (usually about 18kpm) A set on the Adrian James workout 6pack app. Genuinely great stuff, highly recommended. Currently doing a 17pt workout with 50s on, 30s off. Bench press w/ dumbbells - currently using 16kg, with 3 x 8-10 reps. Incline fly machine, working the chest (I don't quite understand the weight, as it works on resistance rather than strict weight) - again, 3 x 8-10 Kettle bell squats, then raising the kettle bell above my head - 20kg, 3 x 8-10 Lunges w/ dumb bells, again 16kg, with a bicep curl after every lunge, 3 x 8-10 My gym has these crazy things called TRX rows, which are basically straps that hang from a pull-up bar. You adjust their length, hold onto the handles, lean back as far as possible, then essentially do an upside-down press-up, pulling yourself into the straps. The further back you go, the harder it is. 12 of these, immediately into 12 pressups - 3x through. Stiff-legged deadlift, simply raising and lowering the weight bar (30kg) to your waist then down to your ankles, simply by bending at the weight. 3x 8-10 MTS row machine - 50kg, 3x 8-10 Crunches on a swiss ball - 3x 20 reps Plank for 60 seconds Hanging knee tucks, 3x 12 Between each set I leave no longer than a minute, and I try to do the same between exercises, tho this is difficult sometimes when setting up machines (particularly the incline fly).
  3. Idle Workouts

I don't know for sure, but I feel like 3 days on, one day off, is a good rep. The first day will be a little tougher after the day off, middle day will feel strong and you can go further, and day 3 you can push yourself hard because you know you have that day off.
  4. Idle Workouts

Yeah! #geeksinsneaks! I work out three days in a row, then one day off, pretty religiously. Swimming in the morning at 7am - it varies, but somewhere around 1.5k, with 500m warmup, 300 preset, 300/400 main set, and then a cool down - and then gym workout in the evening at about 5pm before dinner. Love it.
  5. Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel Mark Rylance as Cromwell is something you all need to get very very excited about, immediately. The man is a simply phenomenal actor, and possibly the best stage actor of our time.
  6. Other podcasts

Yeah, this is my problem. I like some of the guests a lot, but Hardwick grates unfortunately. Something about his personality just really doesn't click with me.
  7. Life

I decided mid-last year that I wanted to become an actor, and so applied to the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA) for entry in 2014. For context, that's where Chiwetel Eijiofor and Benedict Cumberbatch went, for example. And hey, I got through to the final round! I don't know when it'll be yet (although I'm assured soon) but I am very excited. And nervous. But excited. Mostly nervous. Also I have a lot a lot a lot of work to do. Bugger.
  8. The Idle Thumbs Store

Those three drawings above are the absolute best. Would buy again A+++.
  9. Kim & Clint Hocking their Swiftboat down the Amazon

Ah, I think it's just time spent on the Thumbs forums. Eventually, titles like this make immediate, perfect sense.
  10. Kim & Clint Hocking their Swiftboat down the Amazon

I hope they have a paddle.
  11. Life

I feel like I haven't posted in this thread for a while, so here goes: I'm doing okay, largely. Bummed out about a woman - what's new there? - and feeling incredibly snowed under by the weight of my dissertation (with my first draft due in 10 days, and my final piece due in exactly one month), but largely level-headed about the whole thing. Oh, and by the way, if you wanted to help me out in your own small way - Thanks! - you can fill in some online survey things at and Now back to lurking.
  12. Twitter :)

I am SpeedyD---wait, nope, pabosher. My first tweet was something suitably me:
  13. Life

The only thing I know about Kate Bush is that she has two different videos for her crazy Wuthering Heights song, and both are suitably weird.
  14. I am very very glad that Nick is back on the podcasts more regularly now. I remember Jake once saying that Nick was pretty much the source of all the insane shit that Thumbs is (partially) remember for - baboo etc. - and whenever he's on the show everybody steps up their crazy game. It's the best.
  15. Hey guys!! Some of you likely know that I'm in my final year of University, and as such I have to research and write things. As someone who's played games his entire life, I spent a while trying to figure out how to write a dissertation that was Anthropological in nature (my actual degree) but still incorporated video games. If you'd like to see the result, and would like to be a part, please help me out and fill out this super quick preliminary form at - And, quite importantly, pass it on to friends and colleagues! The more responses I can get, the better the end result will be.
  16. Video Game / Anthropology Dissertation

Well I don't like to think it's bad survey design per se. but as it says at the beginning of the survey, this is just a preliminary survey to the bigger more-in depth coming later. You'll have a chance to be more nuanced then. Ps: my professor hasn't spoken to me in a term. When I told him my dissertation idea, he told me how his idea of 'games' is to play with his vegetable farm. Not even FarmVille. Just a regular old farm.
  17. Video Game / Anthropology Dissertation

SpeedyDesiato is dead.* Ahahaha. It's a nice quick survey! The next (and final) one will be based on the results of this. Rodi - heh. Yeah, I know, it's something a lot of people are bringing up. Two reasons I did it: one, they're instantly recognisable names and I'd categorise them as focusing more on narrative than emergent systems, and two: it tickles me to have gears and gone home in the same category. Thanks for filling it in though guys, pass it on on twitter, Facebook, email!! *I killed him.
  18. The Idle Thumbs 10th Anniversary Committee

WOW. These are just brilliant; I particularly love BigJKO's work. So so good.
  19. Life
