  1. Marty O'Donnell got fired?!?

Yeah that's mostly hyperbole on my part, but also in retrospect only having the ars coverage to look at makes him look better than he did at the time...in the comments of his original review or social media I vaguely remember there being some kneejerk arguing back from him about how "rabid fanboys" couldn't take a review that dissented with their opinion (when all people were doing was trying to point out that there were upgrade points he could have spent), but I bet all that stuff's been redacted/memory holed by now.
  2. The Witness by Jonathan Blow

I thought this was pretty neat (from ):
  3. Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain

so I wasnt going to get this because I am terrible at stealth games but I just got a new laptop (the non-touch version of this not bragging ok actually totes bragging it is SWEET) and it came with a code for it, so. anyways, I am def terrible at stealth games.
  4. Pokemon GO

weird I remember there being an april fools thing that was basically this...let me see if I can dig up a link. yup:
  5. Marty O'Donnell got fired?!?

Not relevant at all because that article seems solid enough, but Dean Takahashi is pretty much the worst.
  6. Shadowrun Returns

Having completed it, I like it a lot. It felt like there were more situations (compared to dragonfall) in which combat could be avoided entirely given the right mix of stats/skills/etiquettes. I'm not a huge fan of the changes they made to decking, but I managed to muddle my way through...on the one hand, decking shouldn't just be a reskin of combat in neon, but adding realtime dodging patrols plus weird memorization games was not the right way to go. I think turn based stealth like invisible inc. might have been good, but yeah this was not that. Also I like your crew from HK more than Dragonfall, both in terms of the backstories/how they are portrayed etc. but also their special abilities and usefulness in a mechanical sense. Replaying Dragonfall again right now, and as my main character is a decker of course I'm going to drop Blitz and take Dietrich along, but for the love of god Dietrich needs a gun, those throwing knives do NOTHING.
  7. Hello & a questions on narratives

this does not refer to games specifically, and it is only tangentially relevant, but it may be of interest regardless: http://stilleatingoranges.tumblr.com/post/25153960313/the-significance-of-plot-without-conflict
  8. Shadowrun Returns

I'm not super far in but so far there's been two missions which could be completed without even entering combat. I dunno if those are necessarily neat hooks, but they're definitely not dungeon crawls?
  9. Shadowrun Returns

No there's no MP component but there is a game codes giveaway thread
  10. Shadowrun Returns

Alec Meer at RPS thinks it's more of the same edit: should mention, for me, that's not a knock on it. I liked the others and am a backer for this one, so.
  11. Destiny

woah. guess i should log in and snag one if only on the off chance it'll be useful/viable for taken king
  12. Tacoma from Fullbright

there has been a bunch of coverage on gameinformer also an interview with steve over on giantbomb
  13. So I floated both the notion of the 3rd possible resolution and the fact that searching the title turns up some of the most revelatory clips, so rather tepid scoops at best, Steve. Also interactive fiction author Emily Short has a partway rebuttal against the criticisms of tropey-ness. It addresses Claire Hosking's comments as well as our own forum's Stuart/Soledad Honrado's
  14. Them's fitin words, son. Nuts & Bolts is super rad.
  15. Is Her Story spoilercast the idle book club of 2015 y/n
  16. Rocket League

If they are under the ball, they probably think they have a shot (even if they're wrong).
  17. Yeah this is me as well. Like I could grouse about the monetization method in theory, but in practice I just play my 120 energy worth of games (which is like 1 normal game and 1 timed game, plus a boss board if I have enough gems saved up) and then I'm usually good for the day/until everything has recharged. I think there's an in-app purchase that gets rid of the energy mechanic (though your bears are still on cooldowns and you still have to grind gems to do the boss boards).
  18. Rocket League

Do the points actually mean anything? I seem to unlock one thingy per match no matter how terrible I am.
  19. Hi myrwynd *seekrit gwj forum handshake*
  20. Rocket League

It's pretty rare for it to work against pro bots 3v3; allstar ones I've never had it work.
  21. Her Story

  22. Rocket League

I've got this via ps+ and its pretty legit. I like how all the doodads you unlock are basically cosmetic (I think there maybe some variance in hitbox with the different car models, but not enough that anyone can reliably turn it to their advantage I don't think).
  23. Summarizing a game

I'm not saying the fantasy is important to the game, because it's not, but it's what you bring up if you're trying to sell it, if only obliquely by referencing its influences. Heck, the word "wars" is in the freaking title.
  24. Summarizing a game

I dunno, I feel GW does have the kind of narrative fantasy you say your game doesn't have: you're piloting a space ship blasting an alien horde to smithereens, even if that's ultimately not super important to the game. I mean it's important to remember the box art of old atari stuff like combat. Even if it is basically a bunch of squares that projects a smaller square out from it...the fantasy is what is used to sell it.
