  1. Splatoon is Ink-redible

I hope Splatoon 2 will get a demo when the game is released. The game looks super fun but I want to make sure that I can get comfortable with the controls before buying the game. I tried one of the earlier test things for like 20 minutes, but had no idea what was going on and random matches did not seem like a great place to experiment with the controls, control schemes (?) and the game mechanics. I'm not a huge fan of competitive multiplayer shooters, especially console ones, but maybe Splatoon doesn't feel overly competitive. I liked Overwatch quite a bit.
  2. Orbit Golf

Some (mostly invisible) improvements on orbit visualization. I also wrote a script that generates a gravitational map mesh based on the positions and masses of the planets. The grass still needs work. Finally, I started implementing the UI texts for the game. (The game looks crisper than the video. Video capture settings are not very good.)
  3. What Remains of Edith Finch

This is an absolutely fantastic game. I have rarely played an indie game that feels so confident in what it is doing, which is especially impressive considering the range of interactions in this game. I also appreciate that for once you don't have to explore every cupboard and read hundreds of letters to find out the story. My favorite story: As to Dosed's point about how best to experience the game: I would say, just reserve about 2 hours and play through the whole game in one sitting. I feel like this game is exactly the right length for what it is going for.
  4. The threat of Big Dog

I love those goofy arms! I have watched the bit at 1:32 ten times now.
  5. NieR: automobile

    Finished Routes C-E
  6. I like Bobby's arc from a person who clearly cares about stuff but feels like he needs to act like a bully all the time to a decent and likable human being.
  7. NieR: automobile

    Finished route B
  8. Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor

I do not recall feeling that the combat was too complicated. However, I don't remember if I was overwhelmed and/or confused during the first hours of the game, so it might well be that everything felt really complicated in the beginning.
  9. "You should stream that" -Chris in, like, the last 5 episodes of Idle Thumbs Also, regarding the significance of Bowser's Peach wallpaper. Bowser and Peach are getting married in Super Mario Odyssey, and Mario is trying to stop the wedding with his Italian homunculus vessel.
  10. Crazy Ex-Girlfriend

I watched 9 episodes of the first season some time ago and then just sort of didn't press play on it anymore. I like many aspects of it, but it did not manage to get me hooked yet. One thing that worries me about the show is whether it moves forward at all. I know it's not what these types of shows are known for, but it seems that this show could be especially rough considering that the entire premise is her pining after Josh. I also wouldn't mind if the seasons were shorter, because I have a feeling (based on practically nothing) that the major story arcs within and between seasons would be similar regardless of the amount of episodes per season. Anyway, the show is really charming, and I will probably return to it at some point when there are less shows on my watch list. What I'm actually here for is to say that the season 2 intro is amazing, especially compared with the first season. It's the opposite of people ruining Parks & Rec intro by desyncing the music and video during season 2 (?).
  11. NieR: automobile

    Thanks for the clarifications!
  12. NieR: automobile

I just "finished" the game. The gameplay is okay, but definitely not my favorite thing in the world. I think I was quite overleveled for the last few mission, which I did not mind at all. I was expecting the story to get more crazy/interesting. Likewise for the gameplay, e.g. in terms of UI corruption or something. Right now I'm unsure – on a personal, not technical, level – how to proceed.
  13. NieR: automobile

I spend most of today's play session running between places to complete side quests, then played the next story mission and got the ability to teleport. Well, at least I will make more progress tomorrow. Hopefully, the next story missions will fix the map and the email system. It seems though that instead of doing something about the issues, the developers just decided to acknowledge their shittyness in-game. Apart from those, I'm enjoying the setting, most of the story, and good chunks of the gameplay quite a bit. However, the Dark Souls rules regarding chip collection from your dead body make me handle most situations in the most boring way possible, i.e. staying far away from the enemies and letting my bullets and 9S do the killing. I doubt this is intended, but it results directly from their design decisions.
  14. Fargo (TV series)

I think the first season of Fargo was fine, but I enjoyed the following two seasons a lot more. The focus on the chaos is so refreshing amid all the murder and other mysteries that try to make you obsessed about finding answers. In Fargo, the viewer knows everything there is to know, and can just sit back and enjoy watching others try to make sense of things from their limited perspective. For example, I loved episode 3 of the new season where I also agree that Carrie Coon is amazing in this show.
  15. NieR: automobile

Yeah, I noticed that I didn't have it installed when I was going through my chip configuration. I wasn't sure if it was because I let someone auto-optimize the chips before. What got me during the prologue was the dead time between consecutive auto-recoveries. Edit: I haven't paid attention to the resolution stuff so far, but the cutscenes are sometimes very choppy, and not in a 30 FPS vs 60 FPS way but much worse. The unofficial patch is supposed to fix that, I think. I will try it tomorrow.

https://www.vg247.com/2017/03/23/modders-fix-nier-automatas-resolution-bug-on-pc-drastically-improve-frame-rate-in-unofficial-patch/ Also, what is this shit? I guess I will check if this makes the cutscenes less choppy.
  17. NieR: automobile

I rarely play games like this (that is combat-heavy 3D action games), but the setting and what I had heard of the story got me interested enough for me to buy the game. I had a pretty rough start as I discovered two thing simultaneously: (1) There is no way to save during the prologue, and (2) the auto-use of recovery items does not work in all circumstances. I didn't have much trouble with the prologue, but having to play the entire thing again* just because my gal got stuck between the buzzsaws fucking sucks. At that point I was just about ready to harpoon the Steam refund whale, but eventually decided to give the game another chance. Now that I can at least manually save, the game is more enjoyable, but I'm still not entirely sure why they went for this kind of system, or how it actually works. Like, I appreciate that saving has a counterpart in the game (uploading your backup to a server through a soda machine ?), but if even the game itself doesn't follow this scheme all the times (I died multiple times during the shooter part after first leaving the bunker, and got to start right at the beginning of the sequence), then why be such a dick about it in the prologue part? That said, I like a lot of things about the game. The setting is nice, and I appreciate how clumsy and outdated the robot that took over the world look. I also like the fact that the user interface is, in a way, part of the character, and hope that this will have some interesting consequences later on. The combat has been fine so far, but I suspect things may get a lot harder soon (I just reached the amusement park). If things get too frustrating for me, I might just turn the difficulty to easy to see the story through. At one point 9S asked me to go through the settings, and eventually highlighted a self-destruct option. I missed whether he asked me to enable or disable it, and in any case wanted to make sure what it did before I made any changes (I essentially did not want to play through the prologue a fourth time just because of a funny gag), and so I googled the thing. I found a forum thread where it was explained that self-destruct can be used to blow up your character's skirt, leaving you in a critical state. One commenter pointed out that this is a great move actually, because it destroys the nearby robots and you get to look at 2B's gorgeous butt afterwards. Is this what anime is about? * Actually, I had to play through it three times because I tried the demo before buying the full game.
  18. This was a hilarious episode! I love where the podcast is headed, even if I don't know where that is exactly. Someone going through his/her webcam footage and finding out that a weirdo creeps in the kitchen every night to lick all the spoons would be terrifying premise for a horror movie. Haha.. I also enjoyed the email quite a bit – very Randall Munroe's What if? -esque – but that bit made me stop walking and go "Wait, there is no way this can be true." Maybe the reader was using log scale. Edit: Thanks Nick for recommending It's Alive with Brad. A friend of mine once linked me an episode, but I did not have time to watch the full video then and quickly forgot about it. I really like the thing Brad and Vinny have going on.
  19. E3 2017

I never even finished the original game mostly because the gameplay wasn't that interesting to me, but was looking forward to Beyond Good & Evil 2 because I liked the world quite a bit.
  20. I liked this episode a lot as a series of moving pictures paired with sound. I'm not so sure about the lore implications. Also, I never expected to find out that Joey Castillo is working with Nine Inch Nails through Twin Peaks.
  21. I like the idea of picking two books that are similar in some respects and comparing them in the podcast. A pair you might be interested in would be Our Man in Havana by Graham Greene and The Tailor of Panama by John le Carré. The latter is directly inspired by the former, which is why both have a very similar premise, namely, a westerner living abroad is contacted by an agent with an offer of work but the person eventually starts fabricating intelligence causing all sorts of trouble. On the other hand, the focus and writing style of Greene and le Carré differ in many interesting ways. It is also quite intriguing that both authors worked for MI6 at one point.
  22. E3 2017

The fact that they did not show any gameplay footage (?), and that the game suddenly features some sort of a simulated solar system shared by the players in one way or another. The original cinematic trailer was released almost 10 years ago and while it was clear that the game was in a weird development hell for a long time*, at least I knew that when finally committing to it, Ubisoft can whip up a 3rd person action adventure game in a decent amount of time. Sure, this new game will probably be released too eventually, but I feel like it could be a while. * I remember someone at Ubisoft actually accidentally denying that the sequel was ever announced after the leaked gameplay footage.
  23. E3 2017

I was traveling during the E3 so I'm just catching up with the content. So far most of the things that have caught my attention are related to Nintendo. Good for Nintendo, I guess. Scattered thoughts: - Looking forward to playing a Metroid game for the first time ever. - That Mario and Rabbids thing seems surprisingly fun. I hope it is balanced enough to be enjoyable. - Holy shit Super Mario Odyssey looks good! I need this now. - Ubisoft managed to make Beyond Good and Evil 2 ever being released feel even less likely by actually (re-)revealing it in the conference. That is pretty impressive.
  24. Kyle MacLachlan and Naomi Watts are both doing a great job in this series! I wish Cooper would wake up already, but I'm also afraid that this would mean that we would have to say goodbye to Janey-E. I expected to detest the Asshole Horne driving over a kid thing, but because the actual scene focused mostly on the emotional side of the tragedy and not the fact that Horne got himself into trouble, I was fine with it. I did not enjoy the assassination scene, though.
  25. I noticed that too, but when nothing came out, I thought that it was probably just wind or something. Who knows with this series, though.
