  1. Dark Souls(Demon's Souls successor)

Thanks for all the advice. When I said I had access to Scaleless and Four Kings - what I meant is that I had fought all my way to their doorsteps. I have the ring and had completely forgotten about it, will have to re-spec my class so that I can wear it as I am dependent on two items to be mobile. The four Kings was terrifying and the Ceaseless Discharge encounter was tough to the point that I can't believe that it is that simple. The painted kingdom was awesome
  2. Dark Souls(Demon's Souls successor)

The lord I had beaten was Nito, I am now able to access the Four Kings and also the Scaleless guy. Tried the Scaleless guy last night and I got cursed. I am never beating this game. I don't even know how to take out Ceaseless Discharge yet.
  3. Who are Your Favorite Video Game Reviewers/Critics?

By far my favourite in terms of entertaining reads (that still write) are Ellie Gibson and Cara Ellison. I am definitely a fan of Danielle Riendeau after hearing her on the Idle Thumbs. Christian Donlan on Eurogamer is great, his review for Mindjack convinced me to buy the game and his article on LA Noire made me appreciate it from a different perspective, even though I think that game is hot dog shit. Kieron Gillen would be my favourite of all time though. Guy was a joy to read; his Earth Defence Force 2017 is still the milestone of games review for me. I will also say that I absolutely love one of the writers on Arcadian Rhythms's stuff (yes I know I write there too but bear with me), he goes by 'Dylan' and isn't massively prolific but his pieces on Portal 2 Co-Op, LA Noire, Dark Souls and Ryse have had me in stitches. I won't link them or else I will feel like an utter shill.
  4. Titanfall

Wow, logged in to see where the conversation had gone and it is at this. When this comes out on the Bone, can someone tell me if you need to sign up for an EA account or not? That is the deal breaker for me.
  5. Earth Defense Force 2025

2025 is great, not going to say much now but I am really impressed how they managed to enhance the game without breaking what made 2017 great. Edge review is nonsense.
  6. I Can't Go For That (Game Series)

    Metal Gear Solid
  7. Dark Souls(Demon's Souls successor)

Oh man, I have just beat one of the Lords. I've been told that I have about 15-20 hours left.
  8. Strike Zoot Zero

There is no need for that Mington, jeez. I am actually looking forward to checking this out now that it is coming out on a console, I know a few people connected to this so I kind of want to see what they did.
  9. Dark Souls(Demon's Souls successor)

So, I think I forgot to pick up the stone that allows you to place a summoning rune down for people to call you into the game. Anyone know where I can find one of those? Also, I am now at Anor Londo, and I have met the things that people are complaining about
  10. Video Game mechanics to retire

I like search and loot in games that are about searching and looting. For example: State of Decay. That game has refined scavenging to an art form. I was going to say Escort missions need to be got rid of, but then I played Knights Contract and Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom and changed my mind. Both those games understood the Ico method of what an escort mission should be. So yeah, maybe I am just into the idea of not having mechanics and methods of play removed but if they come from the ugly category of badly implemented then the game needs to own that mechanic completely.
  11. Dark Souls(Demon's Souls successor)

So I just got to the second bell, that took me a lot longer than I was expecting as I have had people taking the piss out of me for not having done so in the past. So now I am an Sen's Fortress... That shit is tough. I haven't really evolved any type of ranged game and that is really punishing me now. Bjorn, that is a nice interview - where did you get that?
  12. Dark Souls(Demon's Souls successor)

The offline does have a brilliant emptiness to it but after beating the boss last night and being totally reliant on the NPC character to do all the damage I am liking the online mode a lot more. Also, the fact that you can lift a curse from a vendor blows my mind.
  13. Dark Souls(Demon's Souls successor)

Right, I commented on here a long time ago (over 2 years ago) and talked about a bunch of things I did with my first and second characters before giving up having never rung the second bell. I started this game up on the weekend with a new character (I've lost the others). The most marked difference is playing online. When I first played it, I had no access to the internet, so I was playing in a pre-patch world with none of the community and apart from the comments here I had no idea what I was doing. I've kept things fairly spoiler free in re-reading this 30 page thread and it is exhilarating to be at a point where I am now seeing new stuff. What is most revelatory is how much the mood has changed being online. In offline mode the world is quiet and depressing to the point of being almost unbearable - there were a couple of moments where I was so bummed out that I would turn it off and go and do something else. Ignoring invasions and Co-Op moments the world feels so busy now with the number of comments littered throughout the world and ghosts running around. It feels like a far less empty and harrowing place when you walk up to a spot and read 'I did it!' where there was once an imposing mini boss. I have gone for a sword and shield combo and after killing the Drake, I got my first invasion - I was only level 10 - so I think they were a little surprised to get what they got, which was a sound thrashing. I don't imagine it will be the same but I almost recommend that people try playing the game not connected to the internet and then restart with a connection; it is mental. I'm currently trying to figure out what to do after killing the giant rat (I haven't killed the butterfly yet either).
  14. Call of Juarez: Gunslinger

I would agree, this game is worth the play time and the arcade mode is pure The Club (which is good to me).
  15. Flatout Ultimate Carnage (or Flatout 2)

You should also try out Ridge Racer: Unbounded. It is basically a remake of the Flatout games and even more fun.
  16. Feminism

Someone should probably let Henry Rollins know that the video is using his music. Not sure he would be all that happy with his music being associated with that nonsense
  17. Album of the Year, '13

Oh man, Melt-banana released another album! Sweet.
  18. Forgotten Games of 2013

Someone actually liked Lost Planet 3? I played all of LP3 and the only distinction it has, is that it is a not-terrible game by Spark. That said, I would compare the style and pacing to an Assassin's Creed game and those things are huge.
  19. GOTY.cx 2013

I am surprised that you liked Lollipop Chainsaw. I found it dull and derivative. The combat combos you learn are all pretty pointless and some of them are actually a hindrance. The style seemed to have been slapped over the top of some atrociously old and creaky engine. It reminded me of Onechanbara: Bikini Samurai Squad but with all of the fun removed from it.
  20. Essential 360 exclusives

How the fuck have we got this far in the thread without mentioning one of the greatest games of the last generation: Earth Defence Force 2017? Splinter Cell: Conviction ended up being way better than I expected.Skulls of the Shogun is massively underrated and State of Decay was great.
  21. Dead Rising 3

You know what? It does drop frames, but I am the worst person to talk to about this as it doesn't bother me at all. I remember the Giantbomb crew freaking out about the framerate on Far Cry 3 for consoles, I played it and the framerate was the one thing I didn't have a problem with. It does chug a couple of times but I am fine with that, it reminds me of EDF, in that the slow down feels kind of cinematic.
  22. Dead Rising 3

So I have now done 3 play-throughs of Dead Rising 3 on Nightmare mode. The first time I think I made it to chapter 5 before failing. The second I almost beat chapter 7 and the third I bust all the way through. This is a very different game to the first two and in some ways I feel that it actually comes off better than DR2 as a result. DR2 felt like a developer trying to please both parties (the fans and detractors of the first game) and, as a result, pleasing no one. Dead Rising 3, even Nightmare mode, pretty much throws out anything from DR that made it what it was. It still has weapon combos, but you aren't limited to where you make them, there is still a time limit but it just means that you ignore all the side quests and once you've done a couple of playthroughs it is not like they have any real value anyway. This is because everytime you pick up an item or get in a vehicle it is automatically stored in a Data Base for you to retrieve at a safe house (clothes and weapons) or garage (vehicles). This means that after a while most of the time combo weapons become pointless because you can just make a quick run to safe house a get a couple. At the end of the day it doesn't really matter because when you charge into a group of hundreds of zombies, in a dress, luchador boots and a gimp mask while swinging Mjolnir (it is called the Electric Crusher but it is the same thing) it all just gels brilliantly. All of things mentioned above also don't end up mattering because the developers have decided to just let you explore the content at the pace that you want to (I had a couple of people who were utterly bewildered when they randomnly dropped into my game to find me swinging a sword that set everything on fire and using a makeshift grenade launcer from the back of motorcycle-steamroller hybrid) and for what this game is - or at least I feel it is - and that is a developer being allowed to breathe their own personality onto a franchise it makes perfect sense. I am sad to see that it has moved even further away from Dead Rising but happy that it has ended up being such a blast.
  23. Intoxicated:

I just ordered that for my Neo Geo CD, it cost me forty quid. I have not had drink in 4 weeks, I am jealous of you all.
  24. Dead Rising 3

Dead Rising 2: Off the Record brings the camera back.
