one of us one of us I'm this close to paying $100 to get a Ness and a Falcon so that I can complete the original 12. Such a dangerous game.

I'll make the quick counter argument that if your teammates are *winning* those skirmishes, it means a lot to take out your opponents in ranked. If you can get into a good spot and defend the point from one or two incoming stragglers while your teammates hold the rest at bay, you're in a good place. I found this to be *extremely* effective on maps like Port Mackerel. Once my team grabs the second point, I tend to go spawn camp and make sure they can't even get close to "their point." A fight at the point is a chance to lose the point and get a penalty; better to keep the fights on the opposing team's side. I won five ranked matches straight in C this morning and got back up to C+ I think largely based on that strategy. The maps in rotation were Blackbelly and Arowana, and Arowana gets extremely onesided if you can cut off the three points of entry. It's actually interesting how the grates that I think are supposed to induce balance can do the exact opposite. Also, looks like the "optimal clothing configuration" has been found... seeing everyone with Jungle Hat (Ink Saver - Main), White Anchor Tee (Ninja Squid), and a pair of shoes with either Stealth Jump or Ink Resistance Up.

YUP I've had matches where I'll go 9-2 or some equivalent (I'm not quite 18-0 level...), but have a team of 1-9, 3-4, 5-11, and it's painful to watch. JUST HIDE. HIDE FOR A BIT. BE A SQUID. AMBUSH. IT'S IN THE AD

Got stuck in C/C+ limbo this morning. I think the mood killer with Ranked is when you get stuck in a pool and That Guy exists. The pool revolves around the team That Guy is on. That Guy can carry a team that's only three people because of a disconnect to victory, and That Guy will take a full four man squad to a 100-0 shutout. That Guy is sitting in the C+ pool with a 18-0 KD and should be B+ and I can only wonder if this is a new profile they've created to spite me and me alone. I hate That Guy. I finally hit level 18 though!

Main skills do provide more of a base bonus than sub skills, but in most cases the difference is negligible. The general consensus is that damage up/defense up are completely useless, movement is great, and Ink Saver/Special Charge Up are good but interchangeable depending on your playstyle. Non stackable skills that are Coveted right now are Tenacity, Ninja Squid, Stealth Jump, Haunt, and Cold-Blooded. Cold-Blooded is *especially* useful right now, since everyone is running around with N-Zaps and Echolocators.

Professional Tip: If you are torn on the motion controls, take a break from Turf War and run through the single player with the motion controls on. The first thing I did in Splatoon was the single player, and by the end of it I was so used to motion controls that I cannot imagine playing this game without them. It's a 4-5 hour campaign, and it's fun as hell. Also, unlock more guns! Kelp Charger 4 lyfe

Fallout 4 — Boston Makes Me Feel Good
aprettycooldude replied to mikemariano's topic in Video Gaming
It sure is. But I swear, I'm the biggest dunce about all of it. "Oh look a timeless boat, an iconic statue, a unique monument, a gold do- YO THE STATEHOUSE THIS IS MY STATE BAYBAYYY" Contrast all of that to The Last of Us, where I realized the game was set in Boston based on the bird call of the black-capped chickadee. Guess Boston is the new post-apocalypse hotspot. -
Fallout 4 — Boston Makes Me Feel Good

As someone who grew up in Massachusetts and had to go on the Freedom Trail tour more times than I can count as part of history class, I still find it hilarious that the only Boston landmark I ever recognize is the Statehouse. -

I tested this the other day in the weapons test chamber: it turns out that if you squid in a puddle of ink, you might spread the ink just slightly out of said puddle; not enough to register a tick on your special meter, but you can do it over and over and actually create a full trail all the way across the map. That might have been the cause? Also, re: walls I think walls with any curve to them count, but outright flat walls do not. So for example, the steep slopes in Arowana Mall that lead to the side rafters count for points regardless of map visibility, but any walls with hard right angles (most of Urchin Underpass, for example) don't.

Ranked Battle is *super interesting*, because the Penalty that gets levied on teams can completely sway the match. I've only played one so far, and we were getting trounced (something like 100 to 24), and then we capped the zone. Note: penalty only gets enforced if the other team *captures* the zone after making it neutral. A neutral state enforces no penalty on either team. Either way, the other team got smacked with a +70 penalty (!!!) and my team ending up holding the point until the end of the game. Chargers become *insanely crucial*, and I think the Splatterscope becomes a Good Choice for the first time... ever? Since zoning is infinitely more important, longer range chargers that can lay down ink trails to stall opponents are viable, even though in Regular Battle the points they accrue aren't as valuable. Oh I didn't even think about the difference between Squid/Boy/Girl (also, I forgot 5 missions per amiibo, so it's 60 total, whoops). Here's the further breakdown: (Note: clothes are not gender locked!) Inkling Boy: - 20 Single Player Challenges - Complete Various Stages with Splat Roller - Samurai Helmet (Head) - Samurai Armor (Shirt) - Samurai Greaves (Shoes) - Squid Race Minigame - Hero Splat Roller (Splat Roller skin based on Single Player gear aesthetic) Inkling Girl: - 20 Single Player Challenges - Complete Various Stages with Splat Charger - Dove Hairpin (Head) - School Outfit (Shirt) - School Shoes (Shoes) - Squid Jump Minigame - Hero Splat Charger (Splat Charger skin based on Single Player gear aesthetic) Squid: note these are assumptions based on previous footage, as I've only finished 4/20 challenges - 20 Single Player Challenges - Complete stages with unlimited Kraken and time limit, or with limited ink refills - Mech Head (Head) - Mech Suit (Shirt) - Mech Shoes (Shoes) - Squid Beats Minigame - Hero Shot (the one from Single Player, upgrades DO NOT carry over, it's a Splattershot skin)

I think Twig's argument assumes that you are with like-minded players and not Angry Randos. Lord knows the last thing I desire is always-on voice chat, but I would be 100% down with a Wii U Party Chat a la the PS4's system (hook it to your Friend List). I'd be surprised if Nintendo doesn't patch it in (or ~enable the on disc functionality~ if you are a Splatoon DLC conspiracy theorist), with the August update that adds custom games. I would like to note, though, that the PS4 having the microphone in the camera turned on by default was my favorite thing for those opening months where I could hear children yelling at their parents about dinner during rounds of Killzone (which also had Party Chat turned on by default).

As N1njaSquirrel said, do it do it do it. Splatoon is the game that made me spring (I also bought the Wii U LAN Adapter so I can be Not That Lag Guy), and both of those were Solid Purchases.

I would love it if Nintendo added a "please watch your surroundings" startup to Battle Dojo with Swinging Wiimote Guy instead swinging that controller/wiimote/shoelace contraption.

Medium truth? If you play the game the way I did (single player, one set of challenges, multiplayer), you'll get some clothing that's better than what you can get in the shops at the start, which can give you a bit of an edge. You'll also get a bunch of Cash along the way, which will let you unlock just about every loadout as you level up, without any need for worrying about choosing (I've bought out all the stores every day so far, for reference). If you dive straight into the multiplayer, you're mostly just unlocking cosmetic options. Unless you shell out (HA) for Super Sea Snails to add slots to them, they're not as good as end-game clothes (two slots as opposed to three). Note the amiibo are useless until you finish the single player, that is an Important Thing to remember. SUMMARY: The amiibo are $35 DLC that add 60 fun single-player challenges, three new minigames to play during downtime between matches, fun clothing options, and three weapon skins for the Vanilla Charger, Roller, and Splattershot. These are 100% skins, not new guns, and have the same loadouts as their Super Soaker-lookin' counterparts.

Miffy: I'll check the Target and Best Buy next to work on my lunch break; there were still Heck Of amiibo end of day Friday, and I have a hard time believing collectors were still out and about at 8pm. EDIT: Boy, was I wrong. Sorry

SO I dinged 12 over the weekend, finished the single player (amazinkly fun), finished the Inkling Boy and Girl amiibo challenges (minigames!), started the Squid challenges, and have generally devoted my life to our ink overlords at the expense of Destiny. Discoveries thus far: I am utter garbage on Skatepark and Urchin Underpass, I am absolutely in love with the New Squiffer (the shorter range charger with MINES), and this game has the worst case of "just one more match" syndrome I have seen in eons. The Iwata Asks they put up is fascinating in terms of development, but moreso than anything else I want to know how they decided on a three minute time limit, because it's PERFECT. Tips: If you can get the amiibo, I'd do it; the costumes are all two-slot items, and the minigames are great. Also, you get a monetary reward for the non-boss challenges that adds up pretty darn quickly if you roll (HAH) through the challenges. I think it adds up to 15k total, which is not Chump Change. Also, if I haven't added you from the NNID thread, I'm aprettycooldude and you can bet your biscuits I will be online tonight when Ranked, Port Mackerel, and the Zapper drop.

You can hustle past; the best way is to just hang an immediate right through that "back area" after heading down the staircase, which doesn't aggro anything until you pop out the other end, at which point you'll lose aggro immediately upon heading into the next room. I can't remember if he's cloaked or not, but every time I walk down and think "oh, a gang of level 1s, he's not here right now" he absolutely is, so I've just learned to not bother with that open middle area at all.

Nintendo Network ID Exchange Thread
aprettycooldude replied to Don Jon's topic in Multiplayer Networking
I will add all y'all when I get home! I will probably be rampaging through Splatoon's single player first Friday night, but I will be All About That Multiplayer Saturday and Sunday. Edit: Y'all been added -
Glad to hear things are better Grayson. Hopefully things keep heading upwards.

House of Wolves has made the game *very* interesting especially as I level a new character. The idea of having lvl32 enemies just wandering around areas that used to be clear gives a strong sense of the world "evolving," even as I get frustrated getting wacked by the Queenbreaker Captain as I walk over to do the Walker Public Event. I like that, though. I like evolving worlds. I just hope Comet doesn't make the game too inaccessible to newer players.

As someone who jumped back in today after a huge lapse, I noticed that by far the best way to immediately bump your light level and overall just Get Back In is just buying vendor gear. I went from 27 to 30 with two purchases, and one of the new HoW guns was sitting in my Gift Box and outclassed my Vanilla The Last Word immediately, without upgrades (this stung a bit). I'm chewing through The Dark Below quests right now and it seems to me like HoW was designed as the perfect expansion to jump back in with. Once I'm caught up with all the Single Player-ish bits, I'd be game for some Thumbs Runs.

Hey all! This post is a mix of really depressing stuff and also good news! (also, I'm back!) BAD THINGS I have gone through Some Bad Things in the past several months, including two younger sibling hospitalizations, one hell of a depressive spiral myself that lead to relapsing on a few things (tw) , almost getting fired due to a weekend-long internet outage at the ol' job, and losing one of my best friends two weeks ago due to Housing Situations. I've drifted away from a bunch of communities in the process but I missed the Thumbs Crew a whole bunch so now that things are a little more OK I am back here, live, at idlethumbs.net/forums! (thumbs up, cheap pop) GOOD THINGS Some of the bad things have helped deal with some long-standing issues; I've patched up a good amount of things with my family, I've re-established a Brain Problems support network, and I've started getting out of the house to see people I haven't seen since college. It's been good! Also, I finished that tattoo I posted back in *September* of last year! I have attached the photos.
