Hh? I could've sworn that a lot of the previous chatter was hoping they don't introduce combat and wreck it. Maybe they were as ill informed as me/just hoping there wouldn't be a combat focus.

Official Giant Bomb Thread Mostly for Complaining About Dan
SuperBiasedMan replied to tegan's topic in Idle Banter
Similar to others I tried some GB and just didn't enjoy it. It felt broy to me. But that doesn't mean it was full of jocks or rife with misogyny. It's more that it was dudes sitting around, talking typical immature dude stuff and not really thinking critically about their thoughts or experiences. GB is just the personalities stating how they feel and joking around with each other. The Thumbs can be casual and off the cuff with dumb jokes and still have real considered opinions so that they don't have the same alienating normative views.- 1367 replies

I saw a tweet about bring disappointed to see combat in the game. I didn't look at any E3 stuff really but is that a thing that was revealed or did I misunderstand a joke tweet?

Is having furniture like that in a place when you move in weird to people? I've never bought a couch at all, there's always been the basic stuff. Bed, couch, dining table. Housing here is changeable so most people here move too often to bother having their own full set of furniture. It's to the point that almost no apartments I looked at were unfurnished. And I looked at a LOT. I only bought any furniture for the first time in my most recent apartment and it turns out to be an absolute pain.

I have spent 19c in the sale, less than the value of sale cards I've gotten.

But... I started getting those cards before I ever played?

I finally got a chance to join a game of the Steam thingy. I couldn't join any friend's games cause I hadn't reached a high enough level in previous games(since I'd never played)? Then I joined a game that's laggy and since I'm on a Swedish laptop it's all in a foreign tongue I can't entirely follow so this is just a generally a confounding and confusing experience because the levels keep going up. I've clicked on a bunch of stuff, but I assume that I'm barely contributing since I didn't run any scripts or anything.

Idle Thumbs 215: Flirtation & Procreation
SuperBiasedMan replied to Chris's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
The soundalike problem probably depends a bit on how much attention you pay podcasts as you listen. I definitely had trouble with Jake and Sean when I started listening. Though it's worth saying I have the same trouble with characters in films when I'm not paying them my full attention. It usually takes me half the film to figure out how to distinguish people who are remotely similar. -
Yeah custom servers have gone quite mad. Just let the game pick a server for you and make sure to tick the "Official Valve Server only" checkbox.

Oof. That looks really cool but ranks as one of the highest discrepancies between high illustrative detail and bad animation I've ever seen.

Cook Serve Delicious is a fun simple game that just really hooks into a nice sense of flow. My and a friend played a lot, she ran right through and 100%ed the whole thing. No regrets.

Oh cool! When were they on the bombcast? Could I get a link if you don't mind. I'd like to hear them talk about the game since they're (understandably) apprehensive about doing it on IT. -
Absolutely. People's problem isn't that this is coming out, it's that it's at the (perceived) expense of a 'real' Metroid game.

Metroidvania is kinda considered a genre for a reason. It's not that there's one special way to make a Metroid game but there's a lot of design to draw on that this game doesn't seem to.

Catherine makes more sense as a game if you imagine the whole game being made by people who identify with the Protagonist (Vincent) and not the women.

You think Aria is hard? There's a character that I love that game and still cannot beat the first set of levels as Aria. Dove is a not too hard alternate character, especially once you make good use of her flower.

Also when I saw that concept to real screenshot comparison it looked so damn gorgeous. Olly and Jane have done superb work on this. Making stylised 3D stuff that really does look and feel nice is such a big hurdle that ends up being a common oversight by even the biggest productions. It's great to see Firewatch nailing it. (...I hope I haven't wrongly attributed who deserves the credit for this work! Please correct me if I have) -
Well, it does something different to a lot of other games, and does it well. I think it is totally worth it if this kind of game is your thing. It does lean in so heavily to what makes it good that if that stuff isn't your jam, it's probably not going to feel worthwhile. If you're unsure what it is, I'll stick some vague words describing it in spoiler tags, so you can know it better. These aren't about the story/premise, just the experience of playing it and what kind of work it is. Non spoilerly, I think a familiarity with American rural culture and american literature are beneficial. Though also not necessary, as I know very little of either and emphatically enjoy it.

Unity Answers is a good supplement to the tutorials too: http://answers.unity3d.com It's basically a question and answer site, where you can get help if you're having trouble understanding parts of Unity. You can browse other people's questions, and if there's none that answer your question then you can make a new post and ask it. People are generally pretty helpful regardless of skill level (as long as you make the effort to follow their rules about making a question clear) so it's a good place to go if you need help solving a specific problem or you need to understand a function better.

Gor In other news, I got emergency texted by my supervisor today that even though I was known holidays I had to solve a mini crisis for them. I am still surprised to be reminded that I'm not just a disposable cog from the machine. My presence there means something real. Also my girlfriend is now even more sure that I should ask for a raise.
