  1. I Had a Random Thought (About Video Games)

They could make a KILLING by doing a print run of those. Good quality, full size. They'd make hot cakes look like turds.
  2. E3 2015

New Metroid, eh? I see. I seeeeeeeee. Didn't Sony get polite applause for new IP too? That thing there the world has ended and people have gone tribal and they're hunting robots in an open world with bows and stuff. I now realise that sentence doesn't narrow things down much. A red haired monster hunter woman was rolling about in the grass and firing arrows at some cyborg rhino thing. What was that game called? Vanquish Dawn. Something Rising. I don't know. The Killzone guys are doing it. That one.
  3. General Video Game Deals Thread

This Borderlands Humble Bundle, then. Worth playing, or another couple of backlog ballaches?
  4. Super Metroid Appreciation Station

Thanks teg. The main reason I'm tempted by 2 is that I've got 1400 stars that I need to use before the end of Club Nintendo and the GB game is available. I do like super short too.
  5. Super Metroid Appreciation Station

So, I asked for your opinions and then promptly ignored most of them and went for Zero Mission first. I've just finished the 'Metroid' bit and have started the suitless stealthy bit. I have to say that I understand for the first time why everyone bangs on about Metroid! It's spectacularly well designed and satisfying to explore and upgrade. I'd be interested to play through he original now and see exactly what changed for Zero Mission. Okay second recommendation request (that I'll probably ignore again!) - is Metroid II worth playing before Super? I know it ties in narratively a bit but how long is it? Anything more than 4-5 hours would be an ask, especially if it's a bit meh. Third recommendation request! Definitely looking forward to something Zero Missiony on a larger screen and I'm just wondering if I should try tracking down one of those sexy Wii SNES pads to play Super with - does the Gamepad work well enough?
  6. I Had a Random Thought (About Video Games)

I'm making my way through the first game on 3DS. To me it feels very much like a return to the earlier corridor style of the first games but with the mechanics of 4. I'm enjoying it. The enemies are dull generic blobby things - easily the worst thing about the game - but it feels more Resident Evil-y than 5 so far (haven't played 6).
  7. http://www.giantbomb.com/podcasts/e3-2015-giant-bomb-s-day-1-live-broadcast/1600-1248/ Also contains Hot Scoops and the 8-4 guys, Mark and John
  8. Just listening to the bombcast with Sean and Jake! Weird - I got really stressed when the question 'So what is Firewatch?' turned into a very idle thumby pensive evasion when they didn't want to put it in a box. It happens a lot on the idle podcast because the thumbs are generally very careful with their words and there's more room given to exploring and explanation and reiteration. On the bombcast, where perhaps it's a little less ruminative (?...yes that's definitely a word now), my brain was screaming TELL THE WORLD ABOUT YOUR GAME!!! Anyway, looks goooood.
  9. E3 2015

It's Next Level doing Federation Force. Feel bad for the team with all this bile going around.
  10. E3 2015

Watched the Direct over lunch. Impressions: - Star Fox looks VERY much like Lylat Wars U (or Star Fox 64 U, if you like), with all the pros and cons that entails. I'm surprised just how sparse and cubey it all looks. It's ALMOST like they're intentionally going for that early poly aesthetic, which I think is coming back in vogue. But they're not. The arwing transforming into a walker droid looks cool. - Triforce Heroes sounds generic but I'm sure it'll be a fine game. Unremarkable but fine. I would guess they use these games to break in some newb staff too. Like Henroid, I'm not clamouring for Zelda filler but this isn't something to get angry about. - Metroid Federation Force looks a bit ropey graphically. I've got a pile of Metroids to play through so I've got a very low investment in the series. Prime Hunters was my first DS game though, which I found a bit boring. I get why Metroid fans are upset. - Yarn Yoshi looks incredible, just like Kirby's Epic Yarn did. I don't like the Yoshi's Island egg throw mechanic but I'll soldier through it because I'm such a trooper. Really strange that we get it here in EUland in only 9 days. - plenty of schoolgirl bosom in that Fire Emblem crossover game, if that's your bag. - amiibo will bleed me dry. Though fortunately the Pixel Mario is big and pretty ugly (why voxelise it?) - Animal Crossing left me wondering if it tied into your existing New Leaf town in any way. If it did, I may be interested, depending heavily on price. Though right now I'd prefer to just buy the amiibo (not the cards). - FE Fates looks great. - Mario Maker looks like the game to end 2D Mario. Yes, crazy mods have been made but most normies won't have touched them. The rabbit hole of making your own courses won't be as much of a draw as trying out other people's creations. I was vaguely interested before but now it's a day one purch. Especially with that little book. It was fine. They need a massive announcement from Retro and Next Level before Christmas (and not a DK, though I'm guessing that's where the money is) but I've got plenty to keep myself occupied with until then.
  11. Quitter's Club: Don't be ashamed to quit the game.

Agreed on both counts. The Swapper was very dark and I got bored with it. It probably deserves more time than the 15 or so minutes I gave it. And Crimson Shroud just sits on my 3DS taking up space. The best thing about it is the dice throwing bit on the touchscreen. I like that.
  12. E3 2015

Miyamoto has specifically said 'chill the beans right down, peeps' and that they've got some sweet footage lined up and it's for Wii U and 'don't worry about that'. They did very specifically say It wouldn't be at E3. Gonna watch the Nintendo presentation over lunch. They needed a real tentpole announcement and all this alliterative spinoff-colon guff looks like baby games for babies. I'm sure they'll be serviceable games but I've got Majora's Mask to play through - I don't want Triforce Legend Heroes Saga Force Power Trio Blah. I understand why there's disappointment. At least they didn't announce another DK yet. What is Retro doing then? Edit. And the team that did Punchout and Luigi's Mansion 2 (Next Level, I think)? If either them or Retro are working on a Metroid or F-Zero for Wii U or 3DS, thy needed I be announced. Even if there were no screens or footage. Imagine an online 3DS F-Zero. Even a GX port...
  13. Can We Discuss the Possibility of Shenmue 3?

I'd sit tight if I were you. No doubt Sega will take the opportunity to bosh the originals on Steam over the next year. To get the authentic Dreamcast aural experience you'll need to pour broken glass into your disc drive too. Alternatively a Let's Play wouldn't be the worst idea. Still, over 2 years to go, so no rush.
  14. Can We Discuss the Possibility of Shenmue 3?

Ha, just saw that thread linked in the E3 thread! Though we can do better than 'Shenmue 3', can't we? Needs to have a Yu Suzuki/kickstarter pun at the very least. ShenYu Suzuthree. Yu Shenmue3. Yenshu...
  15. Can We Discuss the Possibility of Shenmue 3?

Can we discuss the possibility of renaming this thread? Everyone's euphoric at the moment, and even I have a grin on my face. And I thought Shenmue was pretty laborious when I played it a few years back. I have the sequel but couldn't stomach it straight after bludgeoning my way through the original. Now I'm feeling the desire to hook up the old Dreamcast and go for it. HOWEVER,... Definitely not wanting to poop on the party/piss on the parade, but the Kickstarter page seems a bit...sketchy on specifics. I'm assuming there's other funding to compliment the Kickstarter, but there's a long list of contributors and 2 million is going to disappear extremely quickly. Even if it matches Bloodstained and manages $5m, and assuming there's private investment enough to double that, I don't think that's going to go far. I think the fans will forgive plenty of jank here, for nostalgia's sake, but competence is expensive and this must be competent at the very least. Anybody care to reassure me?
  16. E3 2015

Microsoft had some nice colourful variety, Gears of Bore notwithstanding. Seriously, that thing was waaaaay too dark. Backwards compatibility for Xbox is a boon...but other than Cuphead there's nothing else that makes me want One, besides Rare games I already own. Hololens looks like a great tech demo but beyond that who knows...*googles Cuphead*... IT'S COMING OUT ON STEEEEEEEEAM!!!!!!! YEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAH!!! Seriously thought it was Xbone-only. I am extremely happy Well, now I'm not even torn. The Rare compilation looked great, but I already own all those games and with all the Retron-style HD retro solutions (eurgh, I just said 'solutions'...) coming out or being developed, it'll soon be easier than ever to play all those on modern screens their original carts and controllers. In fact, 360 games are the real draw after I sold my old Elite years back (kept the games though). How much is a brand new 360 these days? That'd be the best option for me (or they could let me play them on PC - now THAT would get me to upgrade to Windows 10). Did I mention I'm extremely pleased that Cuphead's coming to Steam? Sony had a great conference. Everything looked solid at the very least (Uncharted 4, Black Ops, Star Wars, etc.) FF7 means nothing to me, but Last Guardian looked pleasingly real and Shenmue 3 was more a pipedream than Half-Life 3! Kudos. If they gave me backwards compatibility with my PS3 digital games I'd be actively searching for PS4 deals. Until then (or late 2016), I'm good. Nintendo can't beat Shenmue 3 and Last Guardian. But Starfox coupled with a Metroid or an F-Zero would be respectable. A new Retro Studio DK ain't gonna cut the mustard. It's time for the bigguns, Timmy. And I'm calling Mother 3 to be announced later in the year (Xmas '15). Guess it's time to dig out the Dreamcast and get on Shenmue 2, then.
  17. E3 2015

Hololens will never have Pikmin. *sadface
  18. Steam Summer Sale Spendapalooza

    Wrapped and bagged. Finally!
  19. I've been thinking for a while about the transactional nature of many things in the show. It seems like Twin Peaks is a town built on a karmic economy where good must be paid for with evil. The picture-postcard dream of it all exists intertwined with prostitution, abuse, incest and murder. Jake's comment about Twin Peaks being better than Deer Meadow in every way, even the murder, made me consider why that is. Deer Meadow's got the sheriff and the diner and the trees but it's all tasteless and lifeless and dull. The sheriff's not evil or interesting, he's just stupid. The town is a bland and suffocating vacuum and when Lynch transitions to Twin Peaks and we hear that 'bom-Booommmm...' we all breathe in the fresh Douglas firs and feel the spray off the waterfall and thank God we're back. The coffee and pie are a pleasure. The horrors this police force confront are repayed with a dreamlike spread of doughnuts. Laura is discovered like a sleeping angel on a crisp, fresh morning. Murdered, yes, but beautifully. 'Average' does not exist here, just the twin extremes of love and fear. If only poor Teresa had lived here rather than Deer Meadow.
  20. I Had a Random Thought (About Video Games)

Just read Bjorn's quote and replace every instance of the word 'health' with 'tits'.
  21. The terrible wallet scourge of the Amiibo.

I've just preordered Dr Mario and Olimar at Game. Who knows if they'll come through or if George Clooney and Brad Pitt will pull off some job on them. Think I'm just going to preorder the ones I really want from now on and leave any I'm uncertain about to chance. Scouring eBay and making random trips to department stores has lost its appeal.
  22. The terrible wallet scourge of the Amiibo.

I've got mine lined up on top of my monitor on lumps of blutack.
  23. It's been noted (by someone somewhere but I can't remember where!) that the appearance of the spirits always coincides with distress or some kind of imbalance in the 'real' world. If that's the case then Leland is the one with the agency and culpability, giving in and opening the door for Bob.
  24. I Had a Random Thought (About Video Games)

My name comes from video games, sort of. In the UK in the late '90s I was an avid N64 Magazine reader. On the letters page they had Correction Corner where readers would call out misprints and typos and the staff would invariably blame them on the art monkeys. When I needed a username it just popped in there. Except it was taken. So I donned my pretension cap and came up with d'artmonkey. Apostrophes didn't agree with the internet so that got deleted and voila. Except when dartmonkey is taken and then it's thedartmonkey. Should've really gone with 'therealdartmonkey' but I'm exceptionally lazy and resent entering long usernames and passwords.
