Really? I thought everything this gen was standardised.

Everything from Nintendo in the EU will play in the language your system is set to. Only the packaging will be country-specific.

Modest Tech: The NX Generation (Nintendo Switch)
dartmonkey replied to dartmonkey's topic in Video Gaming
If backwards compatiblity was off the cards, those NX editions could really do with a discount for existing owners. At least 50% off if the Wii U version is registered to your acc or you posted to the in-game Miiverse or something. Most Wii Users (!) are just going to stop playing Splatoon if the defunct version isn't very cheaply upgradable. -

I'm willing to bet Spin the Bottle will be one of the additions, another Knapnok game. Supposed to be a fun party game.

Quick informal survey with no qualifications or extra info - Xbox One or PS4?

About 7 years ago I got a 24" BenQ monitor with craploads of inputs and it was my main console monitor for a couple of years. At one point it had my PC, Wii, 360 and N64 plugged in to it. I'll always prefer sitting in a decent armchair to play games but I can't fault the screen. If you're sitting 6-8ft away it's perfect. Do you have a monitor or would you need to get one? Mind you, you can get some pretty great flash deals on TVs. If you're staying for any length of time it might be worth picking up something cheap, or 2nd hand.

Anybody playing around with Miitomo? I need a few more people to get a feel for it. It's a bit barren with 3.

I finished Yoshi's Woolly World. It's an absolute delight, just as Kirby's Epic Yarn was before. Beautiful and inventive presentation, catchy tunes and plenty to keep you coming back if you challenge yourself to discover every little thing in it. In fact, it makes me want to try Yoshi's Island again, although the baby mechanic really put me off. I also finished Aladdin, Simon's Quest and Bare Knuckle III. Aladdin has an impressive first half but the goes a little stale towards the end. Simon's Quest (with the aid of a guide) reminded me of Zelda II - an interesting and admirable sequel that actually tries something different, to varying degrees of success. Great music, regardless. And Bare Knuckle III (JP with an English patch) really is like Streets of Rage 2 on steroids. And the music really grows on you.

I tend to get bogged down in one game and focus on getting it done, usually forgetting to enjoy it. So I've been flitting between games recently doing a level here and there before moving on, and it's been fun. Turns out Pokemon Red, Bayonetta, Yoshi's Woolly World, Actraiser & Bare Knuckle 3 is a winning combination.

All amiibos should unlock a bespoke character theme on 3DS. That is all.

This isn't a bad price for Jurassic World.

No, it can be synced to any console like any of the other controllers. I think it's highly unlikely Nintendo will ditch Wii U games with the console. Making NX backwards compatible allows them to launch a console with a library of great games already on store shelves. They'll have to be careful not to balls-up the messaging but a big 'Playable on NX' sticker should do the trick nicely. I've been playing Yoshi's Woolly World. Don't let anyone tell you that's an easy game. I'm going for all the doohickeys and I've only 100% the very first level. Nightmare. Oooh, shots fired! Is any Zelda game really bad? I can't imagine a Zelda virgin having a bad time with any of them. I really liked Skyward Sword, although the Sky Fortress hub could've been better. I remember Twilight Princess being pretty slow. Majora's might be taxing if you're not down with the time limit. But even then, they're still solid, solid games. I think the first two are difficult to revisit - the rest hold up well (CDi notwithstanding, though I've got no experience with those). I need me some Pikmin 3, Xenoblade X and Captain Toad and possibly Star Fox and I'll be up to date with Wii U. There are a couple of eShop games I wouldn't mind (Kerbal!) but those are the essentials. Mario Maker actually makes me want to get NSMBU for some decent Nintendo-authored level design!

Modest Tech: The NX Generation (Nintendo Switch)

Reports of Wii U production being ramped down, if true, pretty much guarantee backwards compatibility for NX. I think they'll need to sweeten the pot by transferring all VC purchases over as well (or at least offering a substantial upgrade discount). Although 4 years (Christ, has it been 4 years already?!) is short, I think the 360/PS3 cycle made us forget that 5ish years used to be standard. With the Wii U at about 12 million units (GC ended with 21), it makes sense to move on sooner rather than later. Nintendo patented some projection tech that can project things from the pad, maybe onto your hands. It also included gesture recognition. I guess it could put a pokeball on your palm which you could then throw into the TV?? Though that would require a 'proper' Pokemon game on the TV - which must be on the cards now that they're putting all their consoles into one homeheld basket? IF they're doing that. The projection thingy sounds like a red herring to me. And also: Discuss! Edit. Also this from reddit! -
I get the impression somebody looked at the New 3DS, scribbled 'PS4' on a pad and then added '...K'. He ran to his line manager's cubicle clutching the post-it. The superior spits his coffee back into the mug mid-gulp before grabbing the paper and jogging to the Team Leader, who throws his sandwich in his drawer, etc, all the way up to top brass. Ian Sony looks down at the now-crumpled yellow paper on the glass tabletop. "You know what, you crazy sons of bitches? This just might work!...'

Man, that video just has me screaming "Where's the Death Star Trench Run?!?" at my monitor. The details about what the processing unit actually does show some Wii U-esque abilities. Being able to output something totally different to the TV gives it a chance at some interesting local games.

Everything I've read and seen suggests it is exactly that, though. A very good one - lovingly made, transplanted into 2D - but a brazen doppelgänger. Does it have anything of its own? (genuine question - I'm not being facetious -
Totally agree that a $600 bundle is a very remote possibility in the near future but 600-650 is the price that would make me jump into VR and PS4 this Christmas. And if they SERIOUSLY wanted to get VR into homes, the console's success means they could probably afford to take a hit in order to achieve that. The need for the camera complicates things and perhaps they're already making a loss on the headset at $400. But a $599(!) price point for a bundle would fly off the shelves, perhaps even for people with launch consoles. It would make more sense coming with a new SKU which can't be too far off, right?
-
Bundled with a console and an ABSOLUTELY KILLER game (I'm thinking cockpit X-Wing vs TIE fighter/Rogue Squadron) for 600ish dollars, I could go for that. I wonder if those bundles will appear and how much they'd shave down the margins on the PS4. Maybe with the PSfour?

IF my PS3's disc drive worked I would definitely be buying PS1 games. It's a big gap for me. I never owned one but I played Die Hard Trilogy and Twisted Metal round a friend's house. is doing the rounds at the moment. It's a very glitchy WIP but the Mega Man and Castlevania demos show some potential, I think. They have a strong stopmotion diorama feel.

Imagine if they made all previously purchased VC titles immediately available for redownload on NX... It'd be a hell of a trump card and would help bring all the disappointed Wii U owners round. It'd also help salve the inevitable post-launch lull. I new some new faceplates. My SNES decals are wearing away a bit.

Well, I agree that some of them are a bit garish but there are loads of subtle, understated ones too. Loads of possibilities. https://www.nintendo.co.jp/3ds/hardware/accessories/plate.html

So, I played Bare Knuckle III for the first time EVER on Saturday night on the Retron. It's so good! It really feels like Streets of Rage 2+, with slighter faster and more fluid moves. Skate (or Sammy) in particular feels better where I found him stilted before. It looks fantastic and I played it with an English translation patch, which helped with the cutscenes. The story in general is much more explicit than the previous games. It's noticeably easier than 2 (we got to Round 7 first time on Normal with no save state shenanigans) and although the music isn't as immediately catchy, it does grow on you. I definitely recommend finding it if you have the means. I just ordered Aladdin for MD (hopefully I can make it out of the cave on that damn carpet with save states!) and I'm steadily building a select library of Super Famicom carts. Street Fighter II Turbo arrived this morning and I'm waiting on ActRaiser and Front Mission. Does anybody have any recommendations for imports?
