The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild: open your eyes and die a lot
dartmonkey replied to eRonin's topic in Video Gaming
I just remember having a really great time with it - much more than Twilight Princess. The gyro aiming instead of IR irritated me. Otherwise I really felt it was what TP should have been. I agree it didn't shoulder the burden of needing to shift consoles. But if it had been a dud, they might have considered metroiding the series. -

Was Skyward Sword not almost universally acclaimed, though? I understand that it's criticised for its compartmentalised world structure. But a quick search shows multiple perfect scores and almost unanimous praise. -

I'm on a media blackout now but am also eager for a great Zelda-y game. I'm trying to finish Oracle of Ages and it is TOUGH going backwards - hitting pause to change items EVERY 5 SECONDS is tedious. Good to hear positive vibes about this. My main reason for wanting a Switch asap is to be able to play this on the train. Does anyone know if the touchscreen functions AT ALL on Switch? I'd hope you'd be able to select items with it once you open your inventory, but maybe that's asking too much. Anyone heard anything? -
GAME in the UK and Amazon in the US have offers on Steam Link and Controller. I just ordered a Link for £15.99. Worth a look at that price, even if (like me) you're unsure how it'll work with your set-up.

Quitter's Club: Don't be ashamed to quit the game.

I'm about 45 mins into Fusion. I appreciate how they break it up into nice portable chunks with save points, but I haven't touched it for weeks. I want to finish it and Oracle of Ages this weekend on a trip. Both are exercises in box-ticking but I'd like to sign off on 3DS before Switch. Mind you, I still want 3D Picross 2. And Pocket Jockey is damn addictive. -
Modest Tech: The NX Generation (Nintendo Switch)

I just claimed 'dartmonkey', which involved resetting passwords. It wasn't available for my NNID. Boom. So, as I understand it, the User ID is the tag assigned to your all-encompassing Nintendo Account which unites all the mobile and loyalty/coin gubbins, and will reign supreme on Switch and beyond. The Nintendo Network ID was specifically for Wii U, 3DS and Miiverse which will be phased out with those consoles. For the moment the NNID can be used (as can linked Facebook and Twitter acc logins) to sign in to your main Account if you don't remember your User ID/email and password combo (as I didn't.) Bit of a mess, but should be streamlined from now on. -
I've decided to sell my Retron 5. I sat down yesterday with Yoshi's Island and Sonic 3 & Knuckles but it wasn't a flawless experience. It works well enough and although I've never had any real problems, I've never been convinced by the build quality. In the year (wow, almost to the day!) I've had it, I've completed and (mostly) enjoyed Streets of Rage 3, Aladdin, Sword of Vermillion (!), Grunty's Revenge, New Ghostbusters II, Batman, Simon's Quest and Super Mario Bros 2, plus various blasts on my old games. It's a decent system, notwithstanding the crappy controller, but selling it will allow me to justify a Switch in its place. Plus I wash away the uncleanliness of the hijacked emulator issue. The thing that really pushed me over the edge is this Kickstarter launching in April. It's a slick looking website but, after reading up on the console, it seems to have a bit of pedigree and they are addressing all the obvious concerns. Minus points for MORE lumps of plastic but it's got a disk drive! Frankly, if N64 was part of the initial batch, they'd already have my money. But again, that's something they address and their modular design allows for a certain amount of future proofing. I'm cautious, but it looks promising. More details to come, but now is DEFINITELY the time to pick up those PS1 games that escaped. There's a FAQ about the system here and an interview with the devs here. Also, I'm calling Mother 3 on March 3rd for Switch VC. It's crazy there's been no mention of VC and it's less than 2 weeks away. They must have something in the works. Or maybe it'll launch the paid online thing.

Thumbs too idle? Enjoy this Idle Animation

The game itself is a patchy in places, with very Marmite humour, but there's some real gold in Conker's Bad Fur Day. -
Modest Tech: The NX Generation (Nintendo Switch)

If they have finally sorted the account/hardware link, I would love to go all-digital for the sake of space. BUT it would mean sacrificing physical deals, plus I'd be paying a premium because I'm in Euroland but my account is UK. So it's going to be a mix like the 3DS. -

Good to hear Breath of the Wild feels good. I'm hoping Snipperclips could be the way to get my wife interested in the console, too. Looks fun. In the grip of new hardware fever, with my birthday approaching, and with March shaping up to be a month of long train journeys at weekends, I'm seriously thinking about jumping in day one. Reports say games are finally tied to your account, not the hardware. -
Ah, it's so much better though! Worth the drop in resolution, for me. Also, the actual 3D is really useful in Awakening. It's much easier to read the battlefield with it.

Ditto.

Just finished Captain Toad. I liked it, although it never quite clicked like I wanted it to. I know the game relies on the player rotating the camera but it never felt quite good enough. Maybe I'll return to collect every last thingamebob in the future, but for now I'm done. And Tropical Freeze just isn't grabbing me. It looks and sounds great, but I keep rolling off platforms by tapping the pound button while I'm moving and it's irritating as hell. I'm probably being a total idiot with the controls but I won't be going back to it for a while, if ever. One thing I have just completed and absolutely loved is Affordable Space Adventures. It's one of maybe four games that really uses the gamepad well. Short and sweet, some subtle Miiverse integration at the end - really great game. And that's pretty much it for the Wii U. I'm looking to move everything from my external HDD to a stick to store with the console. I've shaved it down mercilessly to a few gbs, but it's still too big for the internal storage (without deleting DLC, which I don't want to do.)

Yeah, I'll get to end on Normal and that'll be the end for me. No spend, but it's made me want to play some real FE, so I guess it's done its job. When's the Switch one coming out? @Mington The real games are much more in-depth in every way. If you like the basic idea, I'd recommend Awakening. You've got a 3DS, no? It's worth getting one for.

So far I like it. It's polished as hell. It makes me want to play the latest 3DS one which I skipped. Clever girl. Edit. 6406355721

Modest Tech: The NX Generation (Nintendo Switch)

Well, I just changed my Yooka-Laylee download from Wii U to Switch, so I guess now I'll HAVE TO get one this year. Oh-no-what-can-you-do. I agree with marginalgloss - those ads were by-the-numbers slick. I think they could do really well if commercial breaks are littered with tiny 3-second screens just with the Switch logo and the click, and then a full 30-second ad later. Whip up some 'What is Firewatch?'-style anticipation. On a side note, what kind of world are we living in where I backed that turd Mighty No.9 DOUBLE the amount I backed Yooka-Laylee?! Should've known Trump would get in. I'm expecting my Mn.9 3DS code somewhen during his second term. :/ -
I'm gonna say that it's worth buying a cheap Wii just to play it. Console + Galaxy would probably be the cost of one brand new game. Then you could play Galaxy tutu. TOTALLY worth it.

I just binged Mad Men and then binged The End Of Mad Men and I heard Sean and it made me happy and then sad. Failing a Mad Men Rewatch podcast (?!?!?), the idea he proposed of joining the Twin Peaks: It's Showtime! 'cast as a TP virgin is a good one. Whaddathachances?

I just completed NSMBU and have been pleasantly surprised. It's convinced me to keep the Wii U near a power socket come March for if I fancy a blast of Mario in the bathtub. I think some of the background art is a bit bland, especially on the map screen but it's fun. Non-auto save and clunky Miiverse integration are minor negatives. Actually, the Miiverse posts are now mostly scrawls saying 'fu*k this!!!' or 'sooo hard'. Weird seeing effin' and jeffin' in that rounded proprietary font. i've got plenty of coins to collect, and New Super Luigi, as and when I get to it. Any opinions on it?

Wind Waker? 3D World is excellent but it took me an entire play through to get over the fact it wasn't Galaxy and wasn't trying to be. I knew it going in but still. I occasionally found it difficult to judge distances and I actually missed the 3D from 3D Land, which I loved. I never got to try the co-op And Champion's Road took me two nights to beat. I'm pretty bad. NSMBU reminds me of old Sonic in places.
-
I went through 3D World irritated it wasn't Galaxy, but it grew on me. I second Yarn Yoshi as secret best Wii U game. I played the 3DS demo and if anything it feels even better. Perhaps it's a lag thing, but everything felt a tiny bit tighter. Great game.

I've got a couple of quiet weekends lined up so, with Switch around the corner, I thought it'd be a good idea to tick off some Wii U games. I've realised that I'm in a position to 'finish' a console! Not only that, but do it before its successor comes out. Most people would cite that as evidence of Wii U's utter failure, but I'm actually quite happy about it. It's a relief to be able to box up a console and make space for something else. A quick count shows 15 boxed games on the shelf and I've had a great time with it. So yesterday I went and splurged on the last 3 games I want to play before I put her out to pasture. Not bad for 60 notes (except for the Selects box art which pokes at my OCD - the silver Everything Or Nothing on my Gamecube shelf still niggles me!). Man, if nothing else, Wii U has been a dream console for platformers. NSMBU got added to the farewell list after Mario Maker had me jonesing for some of the 'real' thing with Nintendo-authored worlds, plus I've been playing a lot of Mario Run. I'm on to World 3 and it's really good! I played the first NSMB on DS but skipped the Wii and 3DS ones. I realise now that 3D World/Land took their presentation cues from this. And the Nabbit chase mode and the time attacks essentially ARE Super Mario Run. While we're on Mario, I can't be alone in finding ALL ghost houses in ALL Mario games a bit tedious, can I? I think the Van Gogh-inspired level in NSMBU is a ghosty one and I'm looking forward to that, but every time one comes up in Run's Toad Rally it's a slog. Tropical Freeze looks and sounds lovely. I'm only 2 levels in but the character animation is particularly great. Captain Toad is fine, although I wish that the camera zoom wasn't binary and was mapped to the right stick. Maybe I'm just sitting too far away from the TV but I found myself wanting a medium between the default view and the super zoomed-in view. Again, I'm only a handful of levels in, but it's fun. It's a colourful trio, to be sure. A fine way to finish the console. By 'finish', I mean play everything I want to have played. There are a handful of things I might have tried given the time (Rayman maybe, the HD Wind Waker and Twilight Princess, Tokyo Mirage Sessions, Starfox) but nothing I'll lose sleep over. Should be a great weekend.
