The built in goals for Elite: Dangerous basically amount to: 1) Get to Elite rank in one (or all three) of the disciplines. There's a contest around this and to my knowledge no one is even close yet. 2) Make a lot of money 3) Get a high rank with the Empire/Alliance/Federation 4) Influence politics Using that, I've set my personal long term goals to be: 1) Get Elite rank in Explorer 2) Fly an Imperial Clipper 3) Help tip at least one system to the Empire From which I've built smaller goals: 1) Get a Surface Scanner, then an Intermediate Discovery Scanner, and finally an Advanced Discovery Scanner 2) Get an Adder, then Cobra, then ???? Which I've personally been trying to obtain via either Mining or Exploration, as fighting and trading in this game bore me to tears. Despite complaints, if you explore enough to find the right belt like Dr. Wookie mentions, you can make a pretty tidy profit mining. It's personally my best Credits/Hour yield at around 140k. Exploration is half of that at most, but it's something to break up the monotony.

Idle Thumbs 192: The New Blindfolded Fool

If it makes you feel any better, the Fibbage in the Jackbox pack is Fibbage XL, which has a bunch more questions. Giant Bomb streamed the original Fibbage a few times and I was already starting to see question repeats. Also, Drawful is the best game, especially if it's phones only so you're having to draw without any erase on that tiny screen. -
Twin Peaks Rewatch 12: Laura's Secret Diary

Hair and brain matter? On the script? What? -
Hmm, so I guess now that this is un-pinned, it's time to ask anyone who hasn't received something to speak up.

Being noisy gets you fans. It doesn't matter what BS you're spewing, as long as you are getting coverage on news sites, you're getting fans. No publicity is bad publicity and all that.

I believe he didn't know it at the time he posted the breaking news, and was told later by others, so that's why it's not linked in the original article at least. -
And they shoot you for them too.

You'd be surprised at the number of companies that are willing to hire someone that's under qualified because "they have growth potential" (read "is significantly cheaper.")

TB has some interesting things to say about consumer protection, coming from the UK where consumer protection actually exists. I enjoyed listening to his podcasts, but then as he started to slide more and more in GG I finally had to delete him from my feed. It's not even about taking a stand for me, I just don't want to listen to that sort of discussion in my off-time. I still think he makes a lot of funny videos.

My friend and I have noticed the disappearing pad lights. I have a theory that it's related to landing gear, as I never had the problem until I started pro-actively extending my gear the moment I make it inside the base. No that I've successfully smuggled anything, but I do practice just in case I come across a big haul. At about 1km I turn on full power and hit the boost to maneuver around any ships in the opening, but if the entrance is completely full, then you're kinda out of luck. Try a less crowded station I guess? The little independent bases are easier to park on and rarely have cops.

We have a Microsoft cloud service that we've been having connection speed problems with in some offices. Turns out that the data center this cloud service is hosted on is located on the east coast, which has been a problem since we route some of our internet traffic through the west coast. A cloud service, that's supposed to be "near you" anywhere on the globe and be fault tolerant and disaster recovery enabled, is located in one data center on the east coast

Man, I'm going back and playing Assassin's Creed for the first time (the only AC game I've played since the original) and Shadow of Mordor has spoiled me rotten. In Shadow, I almost always run up the wall the way I want to, almost always get the stealth kill when I want to, and generally feel bad ass. In AC, I'm always running half way up walls and then falling down instead of grabbing, jumping to another perch and falling right through, and sneaking up behind guys and never even getting an assassination prompt. Don't even get me started on the actual combat mechanics. Shadow of Mordor is back to being my GOTY.

Hmm, who is Nina Freeman? Edit: My only context for Kinda Funny is that Greg Miller took his shirt off on the Giant Bomb E3 stream. I am still somewhat intrigued. -
Yup, it's been a Christmas party staple around here.

I believe you can brand any panicked character, so as soon as you catch him on fire I think you can jump him and brand him then. If you have the extra-explosive arrow perk thing, camp fires and grog barrels explode pretty big.

I bought this on the last day of the Steam sale, but haven't fired it up yet. I'm excited.

I've been working toward beating Oblivion for that very reason, but I doubt I'll actually get to take the X360 off my TV stand since it seems to manage media apps so much better than either the PS3 or X1
-
Oh, yeah that could make a huge difference. Also, lock-on targeting with clicking the stick (X360 controller at least) makes a huge difference for melee characters.

I definitely concede that it's much slower than most modern RPGs, but I've been playing Oblivion, Elite, and Divine Divinity recently so everything seems fast paced after that I guess. Where I'm coming from is that I thought DA:O was crushingly boring for most of the game, and I've been having more fun with this, even before getting out of the hinterlands. It's not the comment that DA:I is slow, it's more the comment that DA:O was more interesting that confuses me.

Today I was buying some vegetables at the local farmers market and was 75% sure I was overcharged to the tune of 15$. Normally, I just either assume I'm wrong in my math (which is pretty silly because I'm pretty damn good at math,) misunderstood posted signs, or just decide the cost of the overcharge is worth not having to go back to deal with it. I started to walk away, but then I stood and thought about it and managed to work up enough courage to go back and ask him to double-check the prices. It really shocks me that some people are so aggressive with shop-keeps when they make the smallest mistakes when I usually don't even bother when I know they've made big mistakes. Let alone things like haggling that you're basically expected to do to get good prices on certain things like cars.

By opening area, I was talking about the first hour of the game, IE the first fight here Logain turns on you in DA:O and the initial attempt to close the rift in DA:I. This just goes to show you that I completely forgot about the actual origin stuff in DA:O. The mage opening was painfully boring.
-
Definitely push the story until you beat the mission that is titled something like "Closing the breach." A lot changes then. I guess I've been playing a lot of older RPGs recently, but I haven't found the pace particularly slow myself. Also, besides the opening area, Dragon Age Origins had the most boring start to a game ever, which seems similar to this (cool opening area, then boring after that.)

I died for the first time last night. First, I did a stupid and was exiting a starbase, hit my boost, and then promptly plowed into the wall just below the exit. I'd had a few close calls here and there before that, so it's my own fault for goofing off. Second, I got interdicted by a Viper and made two crucial mistakes. I tried for way too long to get a warrant scan on him, when I really should have been paying attention to how much of a raking he was giving me. Second, when my shields went down I continued to try and fight with him, until the front of my canopy was broken out. I did my previously practiced, flight assist off, boost then run silent strategy, but he had good enough scanners to keep a bead on me and finished me off with my jump meter 2/3 full. Oh well, each lost cost about 20k, which is a decent amount for me, but not the end of the world. My net worth is around 400k, so I guess it was about 5% each time.

I believe he was the one who brought up the idea of doing the Bombing in the AM podcast (it certainly sounded as such in his goodbye episode) so maybe he's being brought on to start up a Kotaku podcast? Since that's the way I primarily digest news these days, that would be kinda cool. I'd try it out at least.
