So, I thought I'd pull this thread back up to the top to mention that http://openxcom.org/ has been released. I never played the original XCOM when it was first out, and I've made several attempts since I had such a blast with XCOM 2012, but I've always bounced off. I've tried several different mod packs, none of which fixed the clunky controls. I'd always accidentally move a guy and then get destroyed, and then quit. OpenXCOM finally made it playable for me. I'm in so deep right now and I can't get enough.

The Other Paradox Games (Europa Universalis, Victoria, Hearts of Iron)
Dewar replied to Gormongous's topic in Strategy Game Discussion
I bought $15 worth of DLC for this game, because I am a crazy person. Folks on my Mumble channel called me an abused wife with the way I keep coming back to EU4 even though I hate it. Finally, I played multiplayer with one of my friends who's pretty good at these sorts of games and even with the both of us allied we got ground under twice by the AI. I'm really done, for real this time. At least I will be after I finish my imported India game, so I can at least say I got some value out of that $15. -
The Business Side of Video (Space) Games EXCLUSIVELY ON IDLE THUMBS
Dewar replied to Henroid's topic in Video Gaming
Hmm, it seems like salaried wages are pretty reasonable, if it weren't for the lousy working hours and such. The indie information is depressing, if not exactly surprising. -
Ooh, looking nice. I thought I was pledged up to beta level, but it turns out that I won't be getting it until release. Oh well, the dogfighting isn't really what I want out of the game anyway, and that seems to be the primary focus at the moment.

The Business Side of Video (Space) Games EXCLUSIVELY ON IDLE THUMBS

So bizarre that Bungie decided to aire such dirty laundry rather than just pay him the 100k initally. -
There was some successful rat Dota in the groups stage, but it seemed like the aggressive teams figured out how to deal with it there and had no problems in the main event (as evidenced by Newbee barely gettingp past the first stage and then destroying for the rest of the tournament.) At least with rat Dota, you get some fun base races from time to time. I was actually rooting for Newbee, so that's awesome they won, but I definitely wish it was a lot closer.

Divine Divinity has been hard and old, but fun so far. I don't know if I'll be able to make it all the way through, but I'm happy so far. It plays like an even slower Diablo 1.

I guess we'll see if I can make it through Divine Divinity or if I'll just give up and get this instead. That GB quicklook was absolutely amazing.

I hate Games for Windows Live and subsequently MicroSoft
Dewar replied to Coldkill's topic in Video Gaming
This is one of those frustrating programs where you do all the steps, it doesn't work, you remove it and do the exact same steps, then it suddenly works for no good reason. I have no idea how the install is so busted. -
Getting more tempted to throw a couple of bucks their way just to see it crash and burn.

Let the games begin! I might have not exactly lied, but fudged a little, and got Monday off

I like the first two the best. I kinda wish that I'd kickstarted up to the bloodline level.

I hate Games for Windows Live and subsequently MicroSoft
Dewar replied to Coldkill's topic in Video Gaming
Completely remove what ever version of GFWL installed with the game, install the newest from here: http://www.xbox.com/en-US/live/pc/DownloadClient. Sign in from the client outside the game first, then open the game and try to connect. Then if that breaks (which it did for my friend that I bought Dark Souls for) remove it all and do it again. -
The International pubstomps - local Thumbs gathering thread
Dewar replied to axemtitanium's topic in Idle Banter
Unfortunately, the pub stomp near here had less than good service when I swung by last week to watch the playoffs after being assured they'd be on. They weren't because there was a party upstairs who wanted Dr. Who on and apparently the whole place runs on one video feed. I could put up with that, but they weren't exactly pleasant or apologetic about the whole thing, and it took forever to get my food. Really, I should just go to one of the bars near Key Arena and see if anyone I recognize shows up. -
Part of the problem is also this wierd idea that you should always know what your partner wants, evidenced by the trope of a person saying "No, it's fine" when it is in fact not fine and they're expecting the other party to just know that there's a problem (a thing that I'm guilty of often.) There's this strange idea, especially for beginning relationships, that people should mind read rather than communicate.

Yeah, my wife and I are really bad at it So were the GB guys, so that's pretty funny to watch if anyone is interested.

Did we get enough cash to get the deep print or whatever it was, the one that's the same quality of the others? I was recently paid and can pitch in now if we need some more to cover that.

Answering from the bottom up, there are a few different categories of assaults (assault and battery and assault with a deady weapon come to mind immediately) but often the crime transitions to a different type of crime (attempted murder if severe, drunk and disorderly if minor.) Regarding sex-ed and rape culture, I'm not sure if it was my parents, my particular sex-ed class, or religious hang-ups, but I was pretty much terrified of being alone with girls for fear of being accused of sexual assault for most of my college years, let alone engaging in any sexual activity. The theme of "you never really know if she's consented" rattled around in my head for quite a while, and is still difficult for me to deal with sometimes even after dating my wife for almost a decade and being married for two years. It's taken me a long time to get over the victim blaming that is all too prevalent in our society, yet I still wonder in incidents like this what a fair notice of consent/non-consent really consists of.

Believe me, you're not the only one.

You're basically talking about the difference between Murder and Manslaughter here, and I think it's a reasonable distinction to make, even if it ends up being uncomfortable having to grade the different levels of horrible.

Welcome to pretty much every moral choice game ever. It sucks.

Blight Town is definitely one of the more difficult areas in the game. At the same time it teaches you some useful skills regarding limited vision (both because of viewing angles and darkness) and navigation. If it gets super frustrating, there are some other places to wander, one which provides an entrance to Blight Town that, while not percisely easier, is shorter.

Gigabit is a bit extreme. I'm pretty happy with my current 50 megabit connection, I just want the same upstream as downstream and I want it to reliably be that speed all the time.
