A lot of my favourite games are the ones that do tell a story, but tell a story using their own mechanics rather than ones borrowed from prose or film. The only example I can think of at the moment is Journey, which might be my personal BGOAT. -

So for anyone who hasn't seen it yet, a transgender teenager committed suicide today, an already sadly common occurrence. What makes it particularly awful is the -in all likelihood equally common- horrible way her parents have been making efforts to erase her experience and identity as well as minimize the fact that their actions are what drove her to suicide in the first place. Compare the mother's status update... ...to the actual suicide note. This sort of shit is infuriating to me.

Rusty's Real Deal Baseball, Nintendo's weird free-to-play experiment. It's a bunch of baseball-themed minigames that you buy piecemeal (in real money) from a down-on-his luck dog, with the twist of being able to haggle with him to get lower prices. Also, between the trilogy, Dual Destinies, and the Layton crossover, the only Ace Attorney games not on the eshop are Apollo Justice and the Investigations spinoffs.

Night in the Woods Is it wrong that I want this? Because I want this. This is kind of hitting all sorts of high points for me. Gameplay sounds like a sort of Adventure Metroidvania-ish thing, female protagonist, modern urban fantasy setting, openly gay characters, distinct NPCs, really nice stylized animation, implications of spooky-ookiness... I really want to play this game. Really, I just immediately want something to do with this particular setting, cast, tone etc to exist. An indie comic, a cartoon, whatever. The fact that it's a game is just gravy.

Red and Blue had the EXP All, which functions the same way as the Gen VI EXP Share, so that might have something to do with it. ORAS are definitely a bit harder than X/Y by the time you get to the end (I had to refight the Champion after losing the first time), but it's a very smooth difficulty curve.
