  1. Splatoon is Ink-redible

I just played some more yesterday, my first time in a bit, and first time with the new stuff. New music is, much like the old music, great. New weapons seem cool but after messing around with a few I went back to my trusty old splattershot jr. its the first weapon in the game and i still find it the most effective. This game is still mad fun, I've still only played the base mode though, never tried ranked or any of the new stuff. FWIW for team making and levels, I haven't noticed that player level really makes much of a difference, it seems pretty balanced with respect to that.
  2. anime

In the manga, each volume more or less highlights one of the crew, touching a bit on their backstory. Jonah and Valmet and Lehm still get the most attention though, and it sounds from your description like its a pretty faithful adaptation, except that (to my reading anyhow) I felt like i knew more about the characters and the relationships and stuff felt earned. Also they delve into Jonah's weapons thing a little. The Bookman/Hex arc is the one where R takes center stage and it goes into his backstory (he's CIA, works for bookman). Also the manga has lots of scenes where jonah and valmet show off their talent/guns/knives. Guess they had to cut out some of the action to fit into an anime.
  3. anime

Oh dang I didn't even know there was an anime adaptation. That's a bummer, I quite liked the manga. It's actually all available on kindle now too. Amazon makes it too easy to buy a lot of manga digitally, very quickly. I got all of Jormungand and Yotsuba!&
  4. The Official Video Game Music Corner

I saw a quicklook on giant bomb for Luckslinger, which looks pretty neat, but mostly I really really liked the music. This is the only video I could find that featured the music. The soundtrack is DLC on steam, but since its marked as DLC I'd need to buy the base game in order to get it (which I might do, the game looks neat too) e: oh actually it looks like the soundtrack is also on bandcamp, hell yeah https://duckbridge.bandcamp.com/releases
  5. Hm. Well, I Just finished it. I was right, I was close to the end. I don't know that im satisfied, but I don't know what I was expecting either. I've only pieced together part of what I think the story was, but ultimately I think the world and the premise and the way the story is presented are fantastic, even if the story itself... well i'm not sure yet. But im glad I played it. e: also thanks mods for splicing the threads together! just noticed that e2: Just some more thoughts I had, there are actually a number of similarities to the original STALKER's story, but im not sure if those are intentional or just stuff im seeing since I was thinking about stalker since someone brought it up and these are ex devs. But stuff like, the sphere, and the main character with amnesia, and that maybe the main character was involved in what happened and maybe theres something that can fix it? (im not actually sure about those last details wrt this game, but that was the case for STALKER). Also i want to play STALKER again. The first one
  6. I didn't know about the dev's pedigree with STALKER, or really anything about them, but I can see that. I also love how it treats the incredible as mundane (since it is, in that world, of course). I've only read Roadside Picnic, which was great, ill have to check their other stuff if its like that (and in english).
  7. I played another hour or 2 yesterday, I feel like i'm getting close to the end. I'm still really liking what it's doing, and holy shit the skybox at night looks so cool. They have a very stylized skybox which changes as the game progresses, and its really cool. It did seem a bit strange at first that the stylized skybox and (to some extent) terrain was mixed with well realized realistic space, like the interior of the yurt, but it didn't actually feel out of place. The game does get in the way of itself though, there are the block puzzles shown in teh quicklook which seem out of place, and there was one, very short bit of platforming that was required in part of the game. In most games it wouldn't even be worth mentioning, but this game isn't really designed as a platformer, so trying to make the like 2 jumps and not fall through the floor on this one part was annoying. That said, I appreciate that this story is in a game, and not another medium, I really like exploring and discovering the space organically (vs how a movie or book would tell the story) and delving into all the tiny details, of which there are many.
  8. Holy Crap, There's a New Homestar Runner Cartoon

Lmao I wonder if they are actually going to start making (or even backporting???????) stuff to html 5. That would be a ton of work though.
  9. This game seemed to come out without much fanfare, but i heard of it when giant bomb (East, it was Vinny and Austin) did a quick look. which is well worth a look. Anyway I was almost immediately sold on the game and went ahead and bought it. I haven't finished it yet, played for about 2 hours or so, but it is very cool. It is mostly reading lots of notes to piece together what might have happened in the world and solving some first-person puzzles, nothing crazy but there's some item finding. Besides the immediately striking visuals and very well realized, but small, space, the most interesting thing is the story. I'm not entirely sure where its all going, but its handling a scifi story in a way games usually don't. The story involves "neurocopying" which is the transfer of a mind to another, artificial body, which became necessary because of a sort of epidemic. A lot of the fun i've had to far is piecing together that information, so I don't want to say too much in the first post in case anyone wants to check it out. There is more info in that quick look as well. I'll see what I think once i've finished it, but so far I'm loving it. Even if the puzzles aren't great, the world and story and style are worth it. e: apparently there was already a thread for this oops https://www.idlethumbs.net/forums/topic/7941-the-cradle-from-flyingcafegames/?hl=%2Bcradle#entry199760. Should I close this one?
  10. Splatoon is Ink-redible

I've never really considered the loadouts and stuff nearly as deeply or taken it nearly that, or even the strategy, but I've still been spending a lot of time with the game (and doing quite well), though I mostly just play unranked games. This is the first shooter i've sent any appreciable amount of time with since Modern Warfare 2. Mostly i just use the starting weapon since it has great area coverage and comes with a bubbler, which is all the strategy i need for confrontations. Is the general consensus that the motion controls are the way to play? I didn't use them for a while, but i gave them another shot and after that I never looked back, its such a good idea. Feels great and adds precision by having both fine and coarse horizontal aim. e: also, wrt buffs, the most important consideration for me with the clothing is how it looks, not its base buff. Fashion squids.
  11. What can you tell me about Seattle?

I've been thinking about moving to seattle at some point (from San Francisco). I have some friends there and really enjoyed when I went and visited, and its much cheaper than SF, and i like the weather better (i like it to be cold and rainy). Also... I kind of hate sf. I mean i also like it, but it's awful sometimes.
  12. anime

I've been watching Gatchaman Crowds, I'm not sure if I like insight as much as I liked the first season but we will see where it goes (though the ending of the first season was rushed and ocnfusing). Speaking of Haruhi, i really need to try watching it again. I saw like, 6 eps, and it was good, but confusing (though I believe that was intentional)
  13. that's also my impression. Seems to fix issues I had with 8. I'd like to switch to the new browser (edge, i guess, its IE with new chrome) but it doesn't have plugin support yet (seems like thats coming) and I rely on that for 1password.
  14. Post Apocalyptic Books

Although its not actually a global apocalypse, more of a localized thing, a good scifi story that fits the bill is Roadside Picnic by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky, it's a russian short novel and is what inspired the STALKER games. Also, again not post-apocalyptic, per se, but as others have metioned, the Dying Earth subgenre is also good, and may have a similar appeal.
  15. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

There is someone in a giant bomb irc channel that I was trying to convince that privilege exists, it stemmed out of a gg/harassment argument. I usually don't bother but irc is a much better venue for a discussion than, say, twitter, so I was trying to argue in good faith, and then the dude started getting really really racist out of nowhere, so I stopped. That was kinda scary though.
  16. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

I was actually interested to see how they would reply to this, in case there was an actual argument there (but of course I didn't expect one). Probably for the best though.
  17. Yay thanks! Really enjoyed the bloodborne talk. Danielle's frustration was also really interesting, because I didn't have it (not with that part, at least). I think maybe just being aware of the larger possibility space that she is afforded by boxing (eg, moving around/on gravestones, feinting) probably makes it harder. For me, stuff like being tripped up on little gravestones is just like "oh this is just how this game works" because I never really even thought about it in a context (like actual boxing) that wasn't just the game itself. It's also awesome that thinking about it like that makes you better though, I don't actually think a lot about positioning in those games, I should. The stuff in the game I actually was frustrated with was camera angles on larger bosses, but I ended up just "being ok" with that pretty easily, and also got better at toggling lockon on and off. e: ooh also i've also seen the copyright-infringing plumber van (in the Mission). I was going to attach a photo I took but I can't find it anymore e2: whoah, I just made a frowny face but the forum made it into an angry animated red fellow, I'm not that upset! just frowny.
  18. Has anyone found a use for either the bloodtinge or arcane stats, beyond just meeting minimum reqs?
  19. I'm also interested, though I may or may not have time to actually do this. Ill see! I've been wanting to start messing around with game-dev for a while
  20. Super Metroid Appreciation Station

I would like my appreciation of super metroid known, as it is one of my favorite games of all the games. I like to replay it every few years, the last time I did was about a year ago and what really struck me was how well it does atmosphere, and how well that holds up. I don't think many games of that era tried to create atmosphere at all, at least, not that I can think of. I also quite like both of the GBA metroid games, but have never been a big fan of the other metroid games, including the Prime games. I know a lot of people love em but they didn't do it for me, didn't evoke what I liked about the 2D ones, I guess.
  21. Bayonetta

Yeah theres a ton of info and history on her character design in The Eyes of Bayonetta artbook (which was given to me in the idle santa exchange!!!) and its super cool. They announced One for Bayonetta 2 as well, I think its out in japan.
  22. Where in the World - Idle Thumbs Map

This is cool, number 2 in SF for me, Tabacco beat me.
  23. Idle Santa 2014

Glad you liked it! (also, for those not aware, that's BigJKO's art, I think ill get some for myself too)
  24. Idle Santa 2014

ah yeah that is weird. Thanks! I'm not sure if we were supposed to reveal who we were with the gift or not, I've done that in the past with other santas secret
  25. Idle Santa 2014

I got mine today!!!! It took a while because it was being delivered via ontrac and they are really bad at delivering to my office, Idk why amazon uses them, but I ended up working it out. It looks like its a book... Theres a note: Oooohhh wait, is it??? Holy shit yesssssss I have wanted this for so long but it was out of stock on amazon forever. Thanks so much!!!!!!! Oh man I can't wait to read through it. I love this game and this has a ton of concept art and character info and promotional renders that never got released. The world and art and stuff of bayonetta is so crazy and cool. Heres a few other pics: http://i.minus.com/i3EahdL6tBwFe.png http://i.minus.com/ibzgjbYElJKmjK.png Thanks Jon!!! (I don't actually know your forums name, but I figure its gotta be someone else that hangs out on IRC to see me yapping about bayonetta)
