  4. Destiny

have fun! Thorn has to be one of the tougher bounties. I did the bounty chain for Invective (shotgun) a couple days ago and it was wildly easier then Thorns. every time you turn in a bounty there's a small chance of getting an exotic bounty, or you get a guaranteed one at Vanguard rank 2. They probably can't show up until lv20 as they require running high level strikes. keep in mind you get a choice of 3 bounties, you can only pick one, and there is no explanation what any of them are so you probably want to do a little research.
  5. Destiny

Vault of Glass is amazing, by the way! I finally tried it last night (after a couple weeks thinking it was lv.28, oops). Puzzles, complex multi-stage boss battles, new mechanics and enemies, combat broken up by stealth/exploration/platforming sections, jumping puzzles (which are much better then in most games thanks to mr. jetpack), an enormous unique zone. It seriously feels like a different game.
  6. Destiny

every loot game has a gameplay loop, the hope is that you enjoy it enough that the loot means something. Do we have different definitions of loot game? Loot is an important part of Destiny and plays a massive role in the progression/reward structure. Pressing start opens a RPG paperdoll screen. If it's not a loot game it's certainly trying to be, and maybe just doing a poor enough job that you aren't at all invested. this sounds a whole lot like carrot on a stick, the lifeblood of a loot game. :] re: interchangeable: maybe 'enough for you to care' is where it breaks down. If the sum total of my input is deciding whether I want -2s from my grenade cooldown or -2s from my melee cooldown I am supremely uninterested, think the loot system is limp, and yeah, would describe items as interchangeable.

lets not lie to ourselves mington edit; oh ya Architecture I'm on PS3 as ghink. We can be friend if you like! (•ω•)▄︻̷̿┻̿═━一
  8. Destiny

I'm bummed none of the thumbs seem to have tried Destiny. It's fun, but absolutely flawed in some really strange and fundamental ways that I can't quite wrap my head around. Some of the reviews I've seen have touched on it, but none dive deep enough. I guess I'll wait and hope Super Bunnyhop does a video on it. So many questions: Why was there such a massive push for mmo-like multiplayer, mmo-like zones, spawns, events, dungeons, a city hub, all of this! and absolutely no systems promoting player interaction? And not only is there no interaction, but it's actively a pain in the ass to do things like basic communication and party-forming. Who designs a loot system that gives you rare drops only to pull the rug out? This is such painfully obvious bad design. How did you write such a compelling world and setting, and so utterly shit the bed with the story? Are these awful deviantart versions of mass effect characters really the best you can do? Why are loot and stats so shallow and homogenized? Any piece of purple gear is interchangeable. This is a loot game! Failing such a core aspect so fundamentally would be shocking if I hadn't seen diablo 3 make this exact mistake at launch. I could go on for another 20 bulletpoints, but overwhelmingly I get the feeling that the astronomical budget and development time is nothing but a detriment to these big games. Everything feels like it was scrapped and redesigned a thousand times until all coherency was lost, and what was left to polish/release is some weird shell filled with the various pieces that survived. (why is half my inventory for consumables when there are essentially 2 (poorly designed) ones in the game? What was the original design of the city? in its current state it could easily have been a small menu. Why is my ship nothing but a loading screen graphic?) all that said, I do want to reiterate that the game is still enjoyable. I've had fun soloing weekly heroics, the weekly nightfall was fantastic (with lots of LAST GUARDIAN STANDING clutch saves), and I hear the raid is fantastic - almost a different game in terms of mechanics/complexity. Yet, speaking as someone who avoids all press and hype, the underlying promise of this game is almost hilariously squandered. Hopefully it gets the diablo treatment, and evolves into a really great game.

don't do this to yourself (╯°□°)╯
  10. Books, books, books...

BI-ANNUAL BOOK UPDATE gravity's rainbow is kicking my ass. I enjoy the writing piecemeal, but reading for long stretches - as I tend to do - is absolutely exhausting, and meaning starts to congeal halfway to my brain and lie there comatose. reread (most of) Consider the Lobster, which I think Sean recommended years ago? Still great, but in particular the article on athlete biography's has stuck with me the most this go-around. It has that wizard quality of obvious and resounding clarity as you read it, but trying to later recall the turns of phrasing that made it so precise is impossible. (also experienced this lately watching Feynman lectures) been thinking about The Sense of an Ending a lot lately, going to have to re-read it soon!! and I've been reading plenty of campier stuff, too! Stormlight Archives was really entertaining, and currently re-reading the Quantum Thief books. The third book in the trilogy came out in July, only 6 months after the second, which seems (somewhat distressingly) in this world of GRRM novels and video games an absurdly short time.
  11. Recently completed video games

Mass Effect seems to come up randomly a lot, way more then most games, especially other single player AAA games (which tend to explode the internet for 1 week then vanish forever). should I go back and try ME3 again? I loved 1 and 2, but remember completely losing interest in 3 early on, and its been so long now I can't remember why. Was it a bad game?
  12. Destiny

oh yeah, and if anyone has this on PS3(three(3)), add me! PSN: ghink with a note that says 'thumb' or something. I'm high enough level to do anything, have a mic, and am reasonably skilled at shooting aliens and mans (rock solid credentials)
  13. Destiny

wow, I am used to PR being relentlessly positive but those notes are embarrassing describing the loot cave: "The social experience of a cave farming run is amazing: the herding to get a team of Guardians all behind the line and firing in the right direction, the rush to grab the loot, the scramble when the panic wave starts, the beckoning glow from inside the cave. The speed at which the community organized around this activity was inspiring and humbling to us." good lord. For those who haven't experienced this wonder, its a tiny cave where people sit afk and borderline exploit the games broken loot system. sounds like some much needed changes though, amid the fluff. I'm personally glad they're buffing little Thorn! I love handcannons, and getting Thorn was substantial grinding capped by a really exciting fight, but it's... not an amazing weapon.
  14. Since halo seems to hold an almost farcry 2-eqse reverence among you guys, you should check out goatrope's commented halo 1 speedrun. I haven't played halo since it came out, but it really is a tribute to that games design that it still looks so fluid today, and the commentary added a really fascinating layer.
  15. the newbie stream is being cast by Blitz (who is semi-pro), Pyrion and Shane (who you've seen if you watch any GDStudio games). All 3 are super amicable + entertaining dudes. Ayesee posted the casting schedule: https://twitter.com/ayesee/status/486204057783390208'>here
  16. Dota Today 11: She's My Hard Support

pausin midway though to answer a question Brad had: Why continue farming on a super farmed carry when you could spread it around? (this is all situational of course) but even if a carry is 6 slotted, there are important things to buy. Buyback, buying travels after buyback, buying a fresh BKB to reset the duration, even in extreme cases buying a courier for the sole purpose of flying behind you carrying BoT if you are, like, holding 3 rapiers - which has happened in a few games I've seen. Besides that there is exp to get (if the hero isn't 25), and even beyond that your carry might sweep the jungle for the sole purpose of denying gold to enemies, which a semicarry might not be able to do quickly enough before an important fight etc all that said, it is a good idea to give your team farm. Part of being a good carry is the ability to judge your strength well enough to know when you can farm dangerous areas while leaving safer ones to your team.
  17. ya I'll get back to it! I started working on a game jam, but wasn't super keen on recording, as it'd slow things down immensely. Gamemaker robot adventures will resume soon. though maybe not for a bit longer, with dark souls 2 is coming out on the 10th ヽ(´ー`)ノ cool! Randomly generating an interesting, solvable maze is a pretty solid programming challenge so you've got my sincere 'good luck' :
  18. Game Jams

I mean in comparison to the rest of the art, which is fairly subdued. but it'd give me a chance to do akira lights which is maybe too tempting to pass up
  19. Game Jams

progress update a few days in! still haven't messed with sound, but I got quite a bit done. City gen + parallax while you travel: though I just realized I drew a bunch of clouds+smog and forgot to add them. a little bit of UI is in: and I was messing around with the motorcycle. The lightwheels feel way more cyberpunk, but I'm trying to decide if it'd be too over-the-top compared to everything else:
  20. Game Jams

thanks! and ya, if I'm a little vague it's because I'm not sure what I want -- though I was thinking something that'd let me put together a simple background track. I've been really into stuff made with vocal samples lately (like ) though I've got no illusions about how complex something like that is to make. as3sfxr seems rad tho, I'll see if I can make any cool sounds with it. Reaper looks like a nightmarish maelstrom of knobs and sliders and things, but is probably more what I'm looking for, so I'll give it a shot tomorrow and see what I can make of it.
  21. Game Jams

I did start makin' some art though! The style I wanted to experiment with doesn't look a whole lot like cyberpunk, but I'm not a huge fan of cyberpunk anyway edit; wow those wheels are lumpy how did I not notice that
  22. Game Jams

this is cool! Is there any software you'd recommend that someone with 0 (zero) musical knowledge could fire up and try to make some noises?
  23. Amateur Game Making Night

decided to embark on blender learning adventures today! scratch that my friend conviced me to learn 3ds max instead
  24. Artists

unless the scope of the project is very small, I'd like to see a convincing prototype (or at least a design doc & project you've finished in the past) tangentially: I think the advice nowadays is getting involved in a game jam. It's a low pressure - or at least commitment - project that lets you interface with other disciplines. If you finish the jam, and find someone you enjoy working with in the proccess, you're already in a MUCH stronger position then if you'd cast a net randomly on the internet
  25. good to hear! I tried running audacity's compressor effect on the audio this time around, so it (hopefully) sounds a bit better. zipped gamemaker file
