As an ink roller, my strategy against snipers is to throw grenades at them. I can lob over things they can't shoot through and it tends to scare them away. Only the most dedicated sniper sits through it to take a shot.

  3. Modest Tech: The NX Generation (Nintendo Switch)

Nintendo going full-on into the mobiles space would be crazy. If they bridged the gap where people could check in on their games via mobile but then play the same game in a more advanced form with traditional controllers, I expect everyone to give them the goddamn credit deserved. ... Of course that's all supposition. Which is the fun of all this.
  4. Star Wars VII - Open spoilers

I just wanna throw a question out there about this: For people alive as adults in the 70s and 80s, were those posters actually perceived as great?
  5. Modest Tech: The NX Generation (Nintendo Switch)

Honestly I think it's a higher-tech tier of the Wii U. Nintendo probably figured out the value of playing off-tv and wants to retain that feature. A lot of people don't seem to use their handheld game consoles while out and about - phones have taken over that purpose. So handhelds get used around the house more often. If that data point is true beyond the observations I've seen, then Nintendo has no reason to continue making handhelds. There will be a console unit in the home that can process the data remotely. They have the tech existing already so R&D cost on it should be way down. All they have to work on is better compatibility for the feature, because it is sadly not universal. As far as the name goes, good lord I hope them ditching "Wii" is great. My biggest criticism of the Wii U when it was announced was the name. It sounded like a peripheral, and people mistook it as one for the Wii. Even Idle Thumbs pointed out how the marketing for the Wii U had to shift dramatically to point out that it was a "new" thing and "different."
  6. Super Mario Maker

Get in now. When you go to "course world," the thing that let's you play other peoples' levels, the first list that pops up is a randomized sorting of newly created levels. It's only when you go to the list based on stars awarded where you'll get the dumb automated stuff. Well, except for the music levels; technically auto-play levels, but with an actual interesting purpose. Turns out I'm friends with the top-rated guy in Mario Maker. I've known him for the better part of ten+ years.
  7. Star Wars VII - Open spoilers

Oh whatever, I'm still pumped up to see this movie. What I like most though is the implication that what the Rebels pulled off in Return of the Jedi was so mind-bogglingly huge that it's considered a tall-tale within the Star Wars setting. That's a first; until now the galaxy has been portrayed as taking everything as historical fact and at face value.
  8. One thing I'm waiting for is the day a console manufacturer just goes, "We're building the console into TVs directly."

Here's my third level so far. Wigglers! :3 4A15-0000-00B4-04FC
  10. Until this past month (Battlefront and supposedly Fallout 4), hardware needs for video games have been on a slow increase over the last few years. The one exception has been HDD space. So it wouldn't be hard for Nintendo to out-do the current competition on that front. But yeah, it is true that for two console cycles Nintendo's concept of brand-new or leading tech has changed from raw ability of normal processes to having something different going on entirely. I'm actually kinda hoping that the 2016 date stamp is just a misinterpreted announcement date rather than launch. I just bought a Wii U, damn it.
  11. Next-gen rumors are already flying with intensity. This time it's all centered on Nintendo. http://www.ign.com/articles/2015/10/16/nintendo-nx-reportedly-has-industry-leading-tech-and-2016-release-date Various outlets are reporting on rumors of Nintendo having a 2016 release date for their next console. Supposedly it has "industry-leading" tech (which to me doesn't have to mean horse-power but everyone is treating it that way). The one thing that's confirmed is that dev kits are already out and being used. Some news sources are claiming that the next Nintendo console is a hybrid of handhelds and traditional home consoles. But again, that could be a TOTAL misunderstanding of something like a newer version of the Wii U's primary controller.
  12. Super Mario Maker

I did a remake of my level. The clear rate was SUPER LOW for what I felt was a mid-difficulty level. The new code is here: EE5A-0000-00AA-F1DA Edit - I finished my two-route level sooner than I expected. Here it is: CEB4-0000-00AB-F994

That pdf link isn't working. What kind of nerfs are we talking about with rollers? They're my weapon of choice and I'm scared now.

Am I the only person who knows the THRILL and SATISFACTION of winning a match by .1%?

TotalBiscuit has disclosed information from his recent doctors' trips. While their targeted range for cancer was successful, it spread to his liver, and diagnosis so far is that it is inoperable. Life expectancy is 2 to 3 years right now. So... As much as I don't like the guy, that's rough news. Edit - Fuck cancer.
  18. Let's discuss what a video game is

It's certainly nothing to worry about. I suppose if people wanted to get super technical about things we could get more specific about interactive digital media. But that would generally just mean that "visual novel" (or "digital visual novel") would get used more in the video game space. Which affects nothing important. Unless you're one of those creepy cultural-xenophobic-video-game types. (that's a universal "you")
  19. Couple things via Gamasutra. First, Pokemon Go's developer has 20 million dollars for development, with an additional 10 million each time it hits particular milestones. The money is coming from Google, Nintendo, and The Pokemon Company (which I keep forgetting is a separate entity from Nintendo). That is... huge money, as far as I know, for development. Since this is going to be a mobile app, my expectations are goddamn huge now. Second, everyone remember Vivendi? Activision's corporate owner 'til a couple years ago? They're investing heavily in video games again. No outright buyouts, but they've invested plenty in Ubisoft and Gameloft. Gameloft has apparently hit super bad times? I just learned via this article that they've been closing a lot of studios. I don't hear much about them from people I know or across the net because they don't necessarily strike that critical-acclaim chord.

Demanding people lose their job over something so inane. Ah, internet. Never change.
  21. Super Mario Maker

I made a level. I guess. It's with very limited tools so I dunno. I may modify it in the future. Edit - Doesn't exist anymore! See next post.
  22. Splatoon is Ink-redible

So, on a serious note: When I see people in the town square doing cool animations, is that something you can trigger manually or does it just depend on where you are facing / standing next to? Because there's people sitting on rails, or looking inside stores, etc. I wanna do that! Also I learned to fear people who have Japanese symbols for names. They are SO GOOD at this game, ffs.
  23. Splatoon is Ink-redible

The only time I find myself going "oh come on," which is my most mild upset reaction to a video game, is if I have more than two matches in a row of getting beaten BADLY. But that doesn't happen too often. In general the game doesn't make me too upset even when I lose. Probably the two biggest things helping there are the time of individual matches, how fast it is to get into another match, and your level / gold progress is based on individual merit. I guess there's the whole thing where winning streaks multiply your earnings but still. Losing isn't THAT big of a deal. This game is just really smart at how it handles itself. The community is great too. I love wandering around hubs and just seeing the incredible things people have in their Miiverse comments.
  24. Splatoon is Ink-redible

Thanks for the link Tango but I'll just play the game straight-up. I was able to get more time with the game tonight than my first, I think, and have fallen in love with the Ink Roller was a weapon. It sorta encompasses the theory of how shotguns work in shooting games, which are my favorite. And it is DAMN good at that role. The only thing I hate is people who execute a pretty genius move in combat; splat the ground around me, which makes me move slow, then they have all the time in the world to nail me. One dude from Japan (maybe? he had the characters in his name) was just... he excelled at it. Blew me away. I unlocked access to a Nintendo zapper for a weapon choice. Didn't buy it yet.

She's a programmer, and the maker of the GG auto-blocker (which then started their "Free speech!" and "blocking is bullying!" bullshit). She's also doing work with anti-harassment folks.
