Uncharted 3: the Uncharteningest

The puzzles, always the weakest point of the Uncharted series are abundant and worse. I don't enjoy hidden item searches and this game throws three of them at you in a short period of time. I am dragging my feet on this one but I should finish it by the end of the week. Overall, I wish I had just stuck with 2 and not bothered.

I agree with twmac in that I preferred the shooting (well the shooting was mostly the same, but just not a fan of the addition on hand to hand) and traversal of 2 (not really the mechanics of it which felt mostly the same to me, but the level design/circumstances in which you're asked to do it), but I have to disagree with regard to the puzzles. I felt there weren't enough of them in 3, but the ones they did have were cleverer and more memorable than the ones in 2.

I did find anything clever about looking at a star, then looking at a tower. The puzzle being that you had to look at it in exactly in the right way or else it wouldn't trigger a cutscene.

The three pillar on the parchment puzzle was okay but everything else was just 'find X insert into Y' or 'Open book, look at answer, follow steps'. The Uncharted 2 ones weren't any better but they just felt less intrusive.

The highlight of U3 for me so far is the Boat. A similar scene in Tombraider: Underworld (which, admittedly, did it first)now pales in contrast.

The ones I liked were:

1) the one where the thingies on the ground show different symbols depending on which side of them your were looking at them from

2) the one where you have to position your view so that all the suspended statue bits coalesce into a coherent image.

You are right, those are both excellent from a visual perspective, even if they were a brief.

Finally got this game and started playing after getting frustrated with the 4th Colossus in Shadow of the Colossus. It's roughly as good as Uncharted 2 to me, but there's still too much combat. Maybe I should play more stealthily, but I don't feel like doing that in Uncharted games. Especially if failure means either

A ) your attempt at stealth was useless, now deal with the reinforcements anyway or

B ) restart checkpoint

So I just play non-stealthy and started the game on Very Easy just because I know I don't care for the combat in these games. I also should try the new aiming setting now that I've been reminded about it by this thread. Besides the combat, I'm mostly loving it, although some other sequences are longer than they have to be as well (the whole chateau and the citadel after that were boring).

I just made it to the cruise ship and man, the part that led up to that was amazing, except for the dudes spawning all over, of course. I also really liked the whole Cartagena chapter, except the obvious ridiculousness that was already pointed out.

The supernatural elements of the story are annoying. They feel like a cheap shot.

Finished it! Was surprisingly short, but the length was fine for me, as I was now able to play through it over a single weekend and I will have only intermittent access to my PS3 now.

I forgot how the first game ended, but

it seems it was very similar to the second one. Nathan Drake seems to be a specialist in destroying long-forgotten cities. Ubar just doesn't fit into the modern world, though, being something that would be immediately spotted from a satellite. I hope (but doubt) this will actually conclude the series as the stories are somewhat ridiculous in that way.

Is Naughty Dog working on anything else besides Last of Us? I am really looking forward to that one, but I'm afraid it will be just as much about ridiculous firefights as Uncharted is. But I hope it won't be.

I'm assuming they're working on Uncharted 4 for PS4.

I would enjoy a good send off for Drake, but one with more time and polish than 3. If they can finally get the puzzles right, maybe make the platforming a bit more interactive and challenging it could be great.

But the biggest thing I can think of is, it would be really neat to see campaign co-op. Even if it's non linear, like you get split up from your partner in large sections somehow. It would still be great, as most of the Uncharted levels are sort of co-op as it is, putting another player in control of Sully or something doesn't seem that much of a stretch.
