To sum up the video, some guy says video games almost ruined his life and therefore video games are a waste of time, instead of admitting he has no self control and that it was only World of Warcraft the game that "ruined" his live, only to say that since gamers something get together at places like PAX maybe games aren't so bad after all, which mostly invalidates his argument....

First of all, I must admit, as someone who has played WOW, that the game can be VERY dangerous, I dangerously addicted to the game, but after a few months I miraculously got over it when I realized what a wast of my time it was.... So yes, I do think WoW is a waste of time, I'd rather play a terrible game for hours than play WoW for a 5 minutes, but that doesn't mean EVERY game is a waste of time!

The guy also says what you could do with the time you "wasted" playing games, like reading books.... Excuse me, hasn't this guy ever heard of audiobooks?

Also, I just watched Citizen Kane for the first time, while I was playing a JRPG and even when I was playing WoW I multitasked and watched movies too!

Not to mention, doing to much of ANYTHING is bad, what's the point of spending you whole life trying to find the cure for AIDS if you don't bother to leave the house to share the discovery? Does reading books or doing anything make you a better person if you obsess over it and don't interact with other people?

If you had fun, you didn't waste your time, just don't get carried away!

My best memories of playing WoW were the times when I was listening to the Idle Thumbcast at the same time, or watching The Untouchables.

Talking about dangerous things, Citizen Kane almost ruined my life :gaming::violin:;(

pretentious or not

Yes, definitely pretentious. He deserves a kick in the balls for the final sentence he speaks in that video.

The music is totally fitting for the subject.

I think it depends what you value. If you're a massive douchebag like this guy maybe you don't have time for games. Have they distracted me from work? Yes. Have they caused me to lose sleep? Yes. Have I spent a silly amount of money on them? Hell yes.

That doesn't mean they're not valuable experiences. Whether it's making you realise something profound, escaping a little from reality or just being able to blow off some steam and shoot mutants in the face, games are worth every sleep deprived, expensive and socially exclusive hour I've played them for. Fucking video games! :woohoo:

*snore*

Not a single joke in the movie. Please don't waste my time with pretentious unfunny movies. I have games to play ffs. :(

ps, on a more serious note, "work" is much more dangerous than games. In they end, it doesn't matter where you worked or how much you've done. It doesn't matter at all. YOU WILL DIE! no matter what. You might as well had fun while doing it.

Indeed. Work is a fucking evil time sink. It should be destroyed!

Oh, blah blah blah. These kinds of things always crack me up. Most hobbies are huge pointless time sinks and if you really don't have a grip, you can ruin your life doing anything.

Phh.. Books. Books are just fine, I suppose, but just think of how many trees gamers save every year as an alternatve. A nobler choice, I think.

There's that and "you might as well leave something behind so as to propel with every life that ends, the human race a bit further forward."

So yeah, I get him, and I think Chris (although he doesn't get into this kind of action) thought something like this writing this. You know, I spend all this time in front of these games, I litteraly work for them but what does it give me in return ?

To me, the only fallacy in this video is the "you are alone" passage. Because it doesn't really matter sometimes if you are physically alone or not, you are speaking with people. It's a different kind of relation (also, his numbers on leveling up a level 80 character are BS). The question I would then ask is : you don't want to level up a level 80 character ? What are you going to do ? If your idea of "better spent time" is reading the 7 Harry Potter Books, you're just offering a similar entertainment value in another media. And on the make great art thing, not everybody can or wants to do that or learn a language, there is no point in learning a language (also, it takes two weeks to get a character to 80, don't think you'll learn any language in that time) that you have no use of, or is it better for your career ? For your job ? Super good idea indeed…

The modern world did not start when you got here mister video, people were already spending too much time in front of their TV (and still are) and before that in front of books, at least they now are together.

Books are not only (and even would I daresay, mostly not) art or great pieces of literature, films or anything, most of them are Transformers 2 and Harry Potter : entertaining.

Oh but to my Idle chaps that go "he has no self control" even though there is apparently no addiction to video games in the clinical sense, World of Wacraft is, in many aspects, such an addictive game that playing it is already playing it too much.
