toblix Posted January 7, 2010 I've always been a fan of self-referencing in video-games, and have enjoyed various indie game mashups, etc (like the ROM Check Fail game, or whatever it's called). I think the Matt Hazard games are the first... double-A game? that does this, though. I haven't played any of them, because I've heard they're not very good. I'm often wrong, though. Has anyone here played Matt Hazard? Is it funny? Is it good?
Korax Posted January 7, 2010 I played Eat Lead and enjoyed it. It's like a good B-movie. There's a lot of love and effort, but not quite the production value that they may have been hoping for. At the very least, it's been a while since release, and didn't receive much acclaim, so the price has probably been cut drastically by anyone who still has it on their shelves. Taking the risk won't be too big a dent in your wallet.
brkl Posted January 7, 2010 Reviewers really don't like it though. The gameplay sounded terrible, but then I didn't play it.
twmac Posted January 9, 2010 Eat Lead: The return of Matt Hazard is okay. The basic cover mechanics and the shooting is like a more finicky Gears of War. The actual visuals in the game are a mixed bag. Mr Hazard himself is pretty well animated and looks good but most of the characters (until you get to the Socom piss take) are pretty poor. I was conflicted all the way through because some of the jokes were good and rang a bell with my distaste for a lot of games' cliches and shortcomings. It felt acceptable, expected even that the levels were mashed together (Russian soldiers randomly spawning in a night club) in a copy paste manner because that was what the story required. My problem was sometimes I couldn't tell when the game was laughing with me or at me. The game fell victim to its own cliches (three waves in a boss fight, some terrible collision and graphical issues) and sometimes it just wasn't fun. As it stands the voice acting and the script are pretty decent but it was at the same level as say 'Last action Hero' not 'Living in Oblivion' when it came to parodying the industry it was set in. I bought it full price when it came out as I buy everything that D3 publish here and after the initial stages(I got to the JRPG character) I put it down for about 8 months and then revisited about 2 months ago and finished it off. I definitely don't regret it but i couldn't recommend anyone pay more than 30 dollars for this.
JonCole Posted January 9, 2010 After watching the Giant Bomb quick look, I'm definitely not going to buy the XBLA game. It's so "edgy" and self-referential that it actually takes note of the poor reviews and disappointing sales of the first game. Sorry, but making fun of yourself to fit in is something I haven't seen since grade school, and I'd rather not see it again.
Tanukitsune Posted January 9, 2010 I don't what to think about the XBLA game... is it trying to be the FOX comedy cartoon of video games? A.k.a. let's through in gaming references, because that's funny? The "OH... Canada..." Level is a weird example... It's basically Mirror's Edge with Canadian Mounties as enemies... and a maple syrup factory near the end... The boss? Johnny Five?! It obviously wanted to target the Metal Slug audience since the art of the portraits looks like SNK art and it play like Metal Slug... I didn't see the game pick too much on the reviews... It said there was no voices because the budget was cut because of the reviews and near the end he tells his past self that he should give the game a few more months of polish before releasing it... The really annoying part of the game... It FORCES you to play Lunar Lander, but not a normal Lunar Lander game, here you have to move forward DODGING ENEMY FIRE until you reach the end and THEN you land... Was was it trying to say "HA HA! Aren't old games ? I mean just look at how terrible this thing is!" Oh... it also said you could unlock "old Matt Hazard games", I thought there were be minigames, but... it's just an image and info about the game... It also drags a little, you could probably beat a whole Metal Slug game by the time you beat ONE level of Matt Hazard, but then again, people would have refused to buy a 40 minute game... twmac Posted January 12, 2010 I actually really enjoyed the XLA title the little I've played of it so far. It is a classic combo of Contra and Metal Slug and if you crank it up to the hardest setting (where one shot kills) the bullet patterns are pretty damn good. Ignore the coating around it and the game is actually pretty damn good.
