Gears of War 2

Recommended Posts

Well Toblix, I liked Gears 2 a lot myself. There are some annoying gameplay sections but I definitely liked the story more than in the first game and hopefully you will continue to enjoy that element to Gears 2.

And this big dude who talks about stuff when he picks up ammo and then hides behind concrete blocks too?

That doesn't sound like Gears 1.

These threads are making me want to try the second one. I didn't think Gears 1 was bad when I played it (at release) it just didn't stick with me and felt really dumb from a narrative point of view, even with the odd interesting thing going on.

But the second one is $14 now so I may as well give it a shot, though it means turning on the xbox...

Just finished Act 1, and what a slog it was! One frustrating sequence after the other until the very end. So far it's been very epic and very actiony, but I think I had to retry most parts five or ten times before barely getting through. The simple combat parts are fine, but inevitable it ends with some semi-scripted sequence where you have to dodge a number of things coming at you, or kill something hurry quick before it destroys the whatever, or you have five seconds to spot a mortar guy in the middle of a battlefield and kill him.

I'm quite content with my perseverance, though. Now I'm down in some caves. Hopefully one filled with less bosses and more grunts...

Game: FINISHED

I've probably never been as happy about being done with a game. Looking back, it was fun, and there were some really great set pieces and sequences, but the whole time I was bracing myself for some long, impossible, frustrating fight, which added a dumb layer of stress. Had I only known

the game would become progressively easier throughout, ending with the shortest, most trivial boss fight of all times

I would probably have enjoyed it more.

How did you find the ending, story wise? I remember being really excited about the third game, when I finished GOW2, and being frustrated I'd be waiting a couple of years for the next chapter. Not a massive fan of the fiction exactly, I just liked the way the second game comes to a close.

It's interesting. I really enjoyed the first game, but I was bewildered at how they decided to end it: Weird cliff-hanger about Marcus's dad being connected to the Horde?

It's not really a game where I care about the plot, but I do wonder what they did with it... I guess I'll eventually find out when I play. I hope it's something interesting.
