Sam & Max: What's New Beelzebub

Recommended Posts

The title sucks, IMHO, but the game itself is probably the best episode yet!

Just completed it yesterday. I haven't laughed out loud so much in any previous Sam & Max game, or at least this season. The writing is awesome, there are some great jokes

*!#¤ poppers

and a few really cool puzzles. I got stuck a couple of times, but then I turned on the hint system temporarily and the first hint I got was usually exactly what I needed.

I bought the second season but have been too stressed out to scrounge up enough motivation to play it.

Wouldn't What's Up Beelzebub have worked nicely?

I've been somewhat ¬¬ at the titles this season. That said, I'm assuming "What's New, Beelzebub" is meant to refer to a Tom Jones song and not just random, so no, "What's Up Beelzebub" would not have worked as well to that end.

But yeah, great game :)

Yeah, the titles aren't really getting me horny, and for some reason I always gather up a bunch of the games because, although I know they're fun, I seem to associate them with walking back and forth that fucking street and office, wondering if something new has appeared since the last game. The games that have moved away from this has been the awesomest.

Also, the hint mechanism is awesome, although I'd like to know the algorithm for when to provide them. Sometimes I get the hints after I've started doing what I'm getting the hints for.

Another way to improve hints would be if Max gave you a hint right after you enable it in the menu. Once I walked through 5-6 screens and I still got nothing in the way of hints. If you're turning it on, you want a hint.

Also, add Satan to the list of excellent character designs and awesome voice acting. He and the monster are really this season's stand outs.

I really enjoy playing the Sam & Max games, but Telltale's finale/climax always appear dull compared to other gameplay sequences and "What's New Beelzebub" falls into the same trap. The first half of the game is a succession of awesome and diverse puzzles culminating in a psychonauts-like sequences and then, they come back to the traditional three ordeals structure. The final showdown is a huge let down considering the characters and locations that Hell provided.

Everybody hates the Soda Poppers, but that doesn't make them good villains- not insane enough in my opinion.

Also, that whole ending sequence with the

wedding

was horrible and stilted like some of those Russian RPGs.
