Sam & Max Season 2

Recommended Posts

...because it's been out for a few days and there's still no thread for it here.

I just had a chance to sit down and blaze through episode one of the new season, Ice Station Santa. Dare I say, better than before? First off, yay for 1920x1200 resolution support! I can finally play Sam & Max on my monitor in all its native-resolution-y glory! Second, I don't think I stopped laughing the whole way through this game. It's the little throwaway lines that perfectly set the tone of the series, as it was before, but this time they seem to have taken a slightly more dark turn which I find makes them even funnier. For example:

Elf:"It'll probably be in the last place you look. Things always are for me. Like my tumor!" (said in the happiest voice imaginable for that sentence.)

There were only two puzzles I got stuck on. The first was simply because I didn't notice something in the environment. The second was a bit more of the "how did they expect us to know that?" variety, but as there was only one of those in the entire game, I'll cut them some slack on it.

Seriously, turning the TV on to coax Jimmy's wife out of the hole? I get that her yelling that Jimmy better not be watching TV is supposed to be a hint, but that one's a bit of a stretch.

Overall, so bloody good. And this is coming from someone who hates Christmas specials of all kinds. Two months of waiting for episode 2 will be pretty tough to endure, but I guess I really have no choice.

Agreed. Damn fun episode. I liked that there were more red herrings this time around.

I basically figured out the Rube Goldberg puzzle and the bleached snowball puzzle before the game progressed to the point where I could solve them.

I also liked that they made efforts to change things up, at least with the street layout.

I was stuck on the same puzzle as you, oddly enough.

I got that the tv brought her out of the rat hole from my usual compulsion to click on everything in an adventure game, but I didn't piece together that I needed to actually get her for a while. Very nice paradox resolving, though.

Just out of curiosity, how big is the Soda Poppers' role in this episode?

I will still buy the season when I have more time but god damn I hate them.

Not very big. And you'll probably appreciate Max's comment to them along the lines of "Why won't you guys just DIE?"

Please be foreshadowing, please be foreshadowing.

Also, you can abuse them a bit:

By throwing bleach-filled snowballs at their eyes. Mwahahahaha!

I love those old computer guys. I hate the Soda Poppers, though.

Me too. The most disappointing moment of the game for me was seeing them appear for the first time. Thankfully, they played only a small part in it. In some episodes they were funny, but I do hope they find some way to off them :) (or just not put them in any more episodes)

The computers are cool, but the one pretending to have a Russian accent has a really annoying voice imho.
