DanJW Posted July 31, 2007 A Heroes game was also anounced, but it's going to be a rather uninspired-sounding "3D action adventure"
n0wak Posted July 31, 2007 Awesome! I can't wait for this to continue the streak of really, really great TV show to video game conversions
SpiderMonkey Posted July 31, 2007 I'd like to think the BBC will approach it with some ambition, but I'm pretty sure it will be a collection of minigames or a platformer with appropriate narrative wrapping. I didn't even need to click the link to know this.
Thrik Posted July 31, 2007 Just kiddie stuff by the looks of it, like most of the Doctor Who merchandise and such. I know from having multiple young siblings that Top Trumps (developer of the game) is some card game fad in schools at the moment, much like your Pogs, your crappy alien things, your Pokemons, your Yo-Yos, etc. I can't see this being anything more than a cheap opportunity to capitalise on both that fad and Doctor Who simultaneously. DanJW Posted July 31, 2007 Top Trumps (the card game) have been around for about 30 years mind you. Pretty much the basis of all other CCGs
Thrik Posted July 31, 2007 I think the reason it's so popular right now is they have a million different versions of the game themed on all sorts of popular franchises. Clearly an ingenious move as kids are buying bunches of the same game in different presentations.
SpiderMonkey Posted July 31, 2007 Let's make no mistake, Top Trumps is awesome. When I was a sprog, I don't think they'd fully realised the power of franchise licensing, but there was certainly a huge variety! My Marvel Superheroes set is still around somewhere. Macabre happy memory of the day: I played Top Trumps with my grandma when she was in hospital dying of lung cancer. We played 3 identical games, with identical hands, which confused us a lot until I remembered you are supposed to shuffle the deck.
lobotomy42 Posted July 31, 2007 You guys can trash-talk it all you want, but I'm still excited. It can't be more of a waste of money than all the Who novels, cds, comics and "Official Magazine" back-issues I have sitting around. It's just one of those things I'm obligated to buy. DanJW Posted July 31, 2007 So what are the stats for Dr Who cards anyway? Extermination: 5? Number of sofas needed to hide behind: 2? Ratio of inner space to outer area: 40? You may like this fact lobo; I know a guy who writes occasional scripts for Dr Who and Torchwood (although he will rarely admit it). Funny man on stage, too. Thrik Posted August 1, 2007 Yes lobotomy42, it's attitudes like that which make cheap franchising such an easy job companies; why bother with a more meaningful game when you can just slap the license on a virtual card game?! If they introduced Doctor Who Shithead on the other hand... DanJW Posted August 1, 2007 Shithead = Best card game ever. I'm campaigning to get it introduced to my local casinos.
ysbreker Posted August 1, 2007 As long as it's got Rose Tyler in it I'm sold! Doctor Who kicks ass! As long as we're clear on that.
lobotomy42 Posted August 2, 2007 Yes lobotomy42, it's attitudes like that which make cheap franchising such an easy job companies; why bother with a more meaningful game when you can just slap the license on a virtual card game?! Except, I don't think it is attitudes like that which make cheap franchising easy. Sure, I suppose it helps with the odd cult franchise that actually has devout fanboys, but most franchising is for mainstream films and television shows. The games are bought by the mainstream because they probably don't own many games, and hey, the kids will play it. From the people I know who buy franchised games, there reasons are usually more along the lines of "Well, I don't care about games very much, and this is fine" than it is "SQUEEEE! Garfield the game of the movie of the comic!!! I must have this!"
Thrik Posted August 2, 2007 Well, I just meant buying it regardless of the quality, feeling obligated to do so, and being excited about it even though it's almost certainly just a cheap card game. If fans of licenses weren't so accepting of mediocrity, perhaps there'd be more than a select few film/tv-to-game licenses that aren't absolute shit. I mean, just look at the state of all these CGI films that have shoddy games released alongside them. Absolute shite! This is really another discussion I'm venturing into, though. Nachimir Posted August 2, 2007 Games are still growing. Eventually, people doing cheap, badly designed cash in games on the basis of licenses are going to face increased, erm, "game-literacy" in players and increased competition from other developers. I hope
Oath Posted August 2, 2007 Oh, much like how Hollywood doesn't pump out the shame shit every summer and has it sell? I do agree that quality will probably rise somewhat, but I too can only base this on hope. As long as titles such as Transformers continue to get sales, even after a series of terrible licensed games this year, there's not much speaking for the general consumer gaining a sense of quality all of a sudden. This is most likely because those buying the titles we're talking about are kids with parents that aren't in to gaming at all.
