BigJKO Posted February 24, 2007 I was really shocked when I read this on Wired News. I mean, what the hell do they expect from a substitute teacher who goes on the internet in a school that apparently hasn't installed pop-up blockers on their computer? Shit like this happens, and should be dealt with in subtle manner. I thought we were living in the "future" where people know how idiotic the internet can be and realize that children can be exposed to porn on the internet, even if no-one intends to do so. Reminds me how concerned I was when one of the kids at the pre-school I work at said to me "I hope you're fired tomorrow!" and I thought how easy it really would be for him to just tell his parents some lie about me and Poof! I'm gone.
Roderick Posted February 24, 2007 On Penny Arcade there was just now another infuriating story that is somewhat related with your doom scenario: some punk kid terrorizing everyone but getting away with it because organisations for their protection are biased to the point of losing all sense of reason. 40 years for a bit of porn? Even if it had been done out of malicious intent, trying to 'sabotage' the children, 40 years in prison is an obscene punishment. A single year is justifiable, though I'd just prescribe forced therapy and guidance for such a disturbed soul. But really, what harm is done here? None to warrant this travesty of justice. DanJW Posted February 24, 2007 40 years? really? 2 life sentences? People have killed and eaten children and gotten away with less. I hate the word gotten, I suspect it's not real.
n0wak Posted February 24, 2007 I saw this a while ago on, I think, boingboing and was amazed at the complete level of idiocy involved. If the justice system has that level of computer literacy, something that you'd expect them to be up on, then it's really no surprise why all that copyright, DRM, anti-game, anti-internet legislation is being pushed by the politicians. I'm with you, except that a year is an insane amount of time too and is well beyond a reasonable punishment for something like this. A fine and then some counseling would be apt, if it was done knowingly and with an intent to hurt or "corrupt", which likely isn't the case here. As one of the latter paragraphs on the first page in the Wired article points out, many of those kids have already seen this sort of stuff and aren't worse of for it, they just shrug it off. A normal child of 12 years should be able to cope with this stuff and the fact that people three, four or five times that age aren't able to is very saddening.
