Aussie Ben Posted December 29, 2006 *A Tumultuous Rollercoaster Ride of Love and Hate Obviously this will be having spoilers, so dodge this if you haven't played yet What is up with Twilight Princess? I keep playing and playing, watching hours of my life disappear, because I'll have to play this game (let's face it, I'll be ostrocized by the community if I don't). And it really is a ride of love and hate. Really. Let's start from the start. Love! Oh look, the art style is really nice and I love the water really much! Hate! Oh hey, I seem to be completely inept because I can't catch a fish five minutes into the game to progress, and it's just like an adventure game because I know what I need to do but I can't. Yay! Love! Midna has the conflicting triangle of cute/cool/creepy! Hate! Her context-sensitive hints...aren't! She helps you about as much as ...a big...unhelpful...thing. I'm no good at similies. But really, every time I was stuck, I asked Midna for help, and what would I get? "WHERE'S THAT FUSED SHADOW, BITCH. HURRY UP AND GET IT!" Thanks Midna, you're the best. Next paragraph! Love! The world is really big, somewhat crazy big, even! Hate! The pointless, obvious busywork and backtracking which seems to have been added just so that Nintendo can bullet point "SEVENTY HOURS OF GAMEPLAY!" See, this is what happens when you let fans dictate where the game should go. Making a sequel instead of a new game sucks. Love! Using the Wii Remote for precision aiming! Hate! Using the Wii Remote for anything else! Replace button with swinging controller around like a lunatic? It's THE FUTURE OF GAMING GUYS. Next paragraph! Love! Being able to use Midna to teleport when you're the wolf! Hate! Not being able to do it when you're Link! (Although I expect this will change when the inevitable betrayal by Midna occurs, the world gets blanketed in twilight again, and you'll probably be able to switch between forms at will. Just guessing here though.) Love! The freaky twilight world with the eerie synth noises when enemies are around! Hate! Having to protect a wagon when Epona controls like a GIGANTIC BATHTUB OF SOME KIND! Love! That utterly surreal story bit which you see just after you rescue the third fairy spirit thing! With a billion cackling Ilias falling out of the sky and Link with no eyeballs and ending with him having a terrifying grin on his face! Hate! The fact that I've run out of Water Bombs at the entrance to the Temple which means I'm gonna have to traipse back to Kakariko AGAIN because there's no teleport feature! Feel free to ignore all this and talk about something else that's good in Zelda, I don't mind if you hijack this and make the topic better. It's just that I've been playing this for about eighteen hours now and every time (as you can see above!) it's HATE! LOVE! HATE! LOVE! HATE! LOVE! Zelda wasn't always like this, was it? Bah, who cares, I need to keep playing and finish it. Eventually.
chunks Posted December 29, 2006 Well I have put about 9 hours into the game and contrary to the world's opinion that it is the greatest zelda ever, I disagree. It hasn't captured my interest like the others have and i'm about to just stop playing altogether because it is rather boring compared the the previous games. I'm not saying that it sucks or is terrible, but I just cannot get into it.
miffy495 Posted December 29, 2006 You shouldn't say that there are spoilers unless you're sure they're true. For example, there is a twist with Midna, but it's not a betrayal. And you gain the ability to teleport anytime soon after finishing the Water Temple. It's a bonus to being able to turn into a wolf and back at will. And there are some minor sidequests (I wasn't even looking for sidequests and just stumbled across 'em) that allow you to get 3 bomb bags (one for each type) with double capacity. That's not to piss all over your criticisms or anything. Some of them are really valid. Particularly the backtracking. Right before the sky temple there a bit where you have to find statues over Hyrule. This is no problem, as there's a warp point near most of 'em, but there's one that's a pain. It's located opposite a bridge from a warp point. A bridge that crumbles early in the game. The only course of action is to ride in a semi-circle across the top of the map from Hyrule castle to a point just NW of Hyrule castle. Also Midna's hints suck. There were a few times I found myself standing at an impassible obstacle right outside where I wanted to go and all Midna will tell me is "Hey, don't you want to go here?" Stupid bitch... As for the remote sword control, it's a matter of opinion. I really didn't move that much when I was playing, but there were a couple of boss fights where I'll admit it felt really good to be able to stand up and, while swinging my arm down in anger, say "Die" *slice* "you" *slice* "son" *slice* "of" *slice* "a" *slice* "BITCH!" *monster dies* Mmmm... vented anger feels really good in Zelda. Aussie Ben Posted December 29, 2006 Yeah, I had no idea where the plot was going to go - I was just taking a guess. Got a bit further today, and I'm glad to see that I was completely wrong.

You do realize that you can warp that bridge back into place, right? It's that strange big rock/statue thing in the southeast corner of the desert. Bonus side quest hidden underneath too: the Cave of Ordeals
Tanukitsune Posted January 1, 2007 The sumo thing with the Gorons completely threw me off the whole fantasy world feeling, but fortunately I only needed to use it once more.... You get a few new items that you never got before... A spinner that allows you to move over sand and snow without sinking. At first I thought it was silly and groaned, but then I found out it can ride on walls in which the cog can fit. Riding the walls on the boss battle RAWKED! Remember those ball and chain guys you hated so much? You meet one... AND GET TO USE THE WEAPONS! YES! WANTON DESTRUCTION! SMASH! GOD I LOVE THIS GAME! :miyamoto:
